-The SBCN has a lot of breadth but not a lot of depth. Typical staffing is one full time director and one part time administrative assistant. However, there are a number of SBCs that have much larger staff that are supported by local dollars.
- The General Assembly and Governor have made it quite clear that the purpose of the SBCN is to create business startups, create/retain jobs. We do that through our services but the services are not the emphasis – the outcomes are the emphasis – businesses started, jobs created/retained
- Largest client segments served include: undecided (24.1%), retail (15.3%), other services (15.2%), and professional/technical (7.2%)
-Our focus is to be the “wide mouth of the funnel” Assisting people who are considering owning a business to either start that business or determine that entrepreneurship is not right for them.
- -That fact is clear when you look at the percentage of clients who are undecided on what type of business they desire to start. A big part of our job is to help them explore business ownership. Many, of course, will determine that entrepreneurship is not for them.
-The SBCN is very “retail/service” business oriented. About 4% of our clients are in manufacturing and a little under 2% are agricultural. Much of our impact is in “main street” North Carolina. Meaning that our focus is more on main street than manufacturing.
-We do have a “no wrong door” philosophy which means that if you come to an SBC and we are not the right place for you, we will refer you to the right place.
Remember, the purpose of the SBC, as communicated by the NC General Assembly and the Governor. The focus is on business startups and jobs.
Our purpose is not FTE generation …. But…. The SBC can assist by supporting entrepreneurship FTE. The SBCN Program Guidelines allows the SBC Director to arrange, coordinate, and teach state level approved Entrepreneurship FTE programs. SBCs can pay for up to 49% of the instructional cost of an approved Entrepreneurship FTE program and the college can still capture the FTE.
A listing of the approved programs is located on the SBC Internal Library within the Client Management System.
