Autobiography
Family Background
My name is Chase Berlin and I am 21 years old. I know it may be a little cliché to say
that I have the best family ever, but I truly do feel that way. I am incredibly blessed to have
the family I have and I thank God everyday for that. I am the son of Ross and Nancy Berlin
and the younger brother to Evan Berlin. Oh, it would be a crime not to mention our 13-
year-old border collie as well because she is a major part of our family. Her name is Deacon.
Now that I have introduced you to my family it is time to dive a little deeper about
our background. My parents began dating during their freshman year of high school and
are still together today. They met in Detroit and have traveled the world together. My
father has been involved in sports his entire life. He played baseball at Wake Forest and to
this day still works in the sports industry. I was born in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1995 while
my father was working for FIFA. When I was four-years-old my family moved back to
America as my father took a job with the PGA Tour. Ever since returning to America, Ponte
Vedra Beach, Florida has been my home. With my father still working for the PGA Tour
today, I picked up the game of golf and fell in love with it. I was fortunate enough to receive
a college golf scholarship at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Moving 6 hours
away from home was an eye opening experience. I realized how much my family meant to
me and that college golf was not making me happy inside. I tell people that I did not give up
on my dream when I quit the team, but I only began chasing a new dream. That dream is to
get into artist management in the country music industry, and I will discuss this goal a little
later on. I cannot say that I am super close to any of my extended family as they all live in
California, Michigan, or Texas, but my immediate family is everything to me. My parents,
my grandparents, and my brother have all given me so much support in all of my decisions
and they have helped make me the man I am today.
Educational Experience
My educational experience has definitely been a little more crazy than your average
student. I attended 2 different high schools and have attended 3 different colleges. I joke
around with people a lot telling them that I have commitment issues. This is my second
year at the University of Florida and I am a senior majoring in Business. I have always been
intrigued by math, management, and marketing. I chose to be a General Studies Business
major because it encompasses all the previously stated subjects and also covers many areas
that it takes to manage talent.
After I finish my undergraduate degree, I would love to attend graduate school and
receive my MBA. I believe this would be a giant stepping-stone for my future career, and
many successful managers already in the music industry recommended it to me. I am not a
part of any student organizations in college, but it is something I do regret. I believe these
organizations can only benefit a student and create connections that are invaluable in the
workplace. One educational experience I was fortunate enough to be a part of was the
Leadership Institute in DC. During my senior year of High School I was flown to DC along
with two other students to take place in a weekend long “learning boot camp.” The
experience was truly incredible and I learned a lot about what it takes to be a leader in and
out of the workplace. I really enjoyed one exercise in which they made me the manager of a
company and I had to come up with a way to handle a work related crisis. It was fascinating
and they really promoted being activists. Additionally, they assigned students to a mentor
and I was fortunate enough to have Ronald Reagan’s personal assistant, Peggy Grande, after
he left the office. I have been incredibly fortunate to receive the education that I have had
and I do believe it is shaping up nicely to benefit my career knowledge.
Work/Volunteer Experience
I do not have quite as much work experience as my friends, but the experiences I
have had have been strong. I have worked summer jobs in Ponte Vedra, such as working in
the kitchen at a local BBQ joint to maintenance for vacation homes in St. Augustine. These
are the only jobs I have had that paid me. They helped me develop a strong work ethic, but
also helped me realize I do not want to work doing manual labor.
This past summer I had the incredible experience interning for Red Light
Management (RLM) in Nashville. RLM has offices all over the globe and is the world’s
largest artist management company. They manage artists all the way from Luke Bryan to
Dierks Bentley to Dave Matthews Band. The internship was unpaid, but it paid by creating
relationships that I will cherish for the rest of my career. Being around some of these
artist’s managers and seeing how they work, and working for them, taught me more about
the industry than any online article or textbook could. Over the summer I was able to
prepare spin value spreadsheets, work the merchandise booth at concerts, deliver Grammy
Awards to the artist’s homes, and post on the artist’s social media pages. RLM is my dream
company to work for and I strongly believe I left a good impression on everyone there.
Lastly, I have volunteered at multiple charities that I am very proud of. I have done
multiple projects with my father’s company, the PGA Tour, and also with a company called
Running Works. Running Works is a charity that creates team bonding for the homeless
and offers them a chance to receive free shoes and clothes if they attend meetings and run
with the group. The experiences this charity taught me not only humbled me as a young
man, but also helped me grow personally. I developed relationships that I cherish and
awareness about a global problem.
MBTI/Strong Interest Inventory Career Report
After completing the assessments I found out I am an ESTJ and my Holland Code is
ECR. I can honestly say these are fairly spot on. To begin, I am definitely an extrovert. One
of my mentors is a woman named Emilie Glover. Emilie has managed Vince Gill, Jamey
Johnson, and currently manages Brandy Clark. One of the things Emilie told me this
summer before I left Nashville is that to be a successful artist manager it takes a certain
personality. You have to easily be able to approach people and enjoy being around them.
She told me that I possess this trait. This aligns with extraversion and I am not surprised to
receive this letter. The letter “S” for sensing fits me because I am very into sounds and
sights. One of my favorite things to calm my mind is to walk 9 golf holes. I do this because I
love the feeling of seeing a beautifully struck golf shot, but I also enjoy the nature. The
sounds of birds chirping and the trees blowing in the wind help calm my mind. The same
can be true when it comes to making opinions regarding new artists. I need to hear a sound
that is unique and moves me, but I also want to find a look that is not out there yet.
Thinking describes me well because I have always been one who tries to do right. If my
conscious tells me it’s a bad idea, I won’t do it. I try to think logically at all time and not let
my emotions allow me to make an irrational decision. Lastly, I scored highest in judging.
This is not surprising to me one bit. I am always the friend who is planning the trips,
bringing all the items for tailgates, and writing down notes. I hate being late and I hate
when plans are unclear. As we discussed in the lecture, “P’s” may find me uptight, but I do
not allow them to convince me to “slow down.” I do think being a “J” is important for the
career I hope to pursue. Managers have their artist’s schedules planned out a year prior
and do not waste too much time on making decisions.
The Strong Interest Inventory is very fascinating in my opinion. I am not surprised
to be categorized as Enterprising as I do feel this aligns with who I am. I have a list of
entrepreneurial ideas in the notes section of my phone, and I prefer to be the leader when
working in groups. I did not score a high score for Realistic, but that is not shocking either. I
am not a fan of mechanics or operating machinery. My score was fairly high for
Conventional, and I feel that is because of my preference for concrete answers. I do not like
open-ended questions, but prefer yes or no answers. I do not believe my occupational
preference changed after completing these assessments, but only helped further align my
career goals. Working at a desk everyday is not for me, and I think that is just okay. I want
to be social, out and about, and doing what I love. Money is not a priority for me, but having
internal satisfaction is. I believe that is one of my strengths that I can articulate to future
employers whether it is the owner of RLM, Coran Capshaw, or an artist that I hope to
manage. If I believe in something, then I will not be afraid to go get it.
Current Life/Career Goals
3 of my career/life goals are:
1) Be happily married and start a family
2) Have a job that creates internal satisfaction and provides for my family
3) Be able to pay my children’s college tuitions so they don’t have loans
After completion of my studies I hope to move to Nashville and begin working in the
music industry. This has been my passion for a very long time and I am willing to start
at the bottom of the totem pole to make it happen. My ultimate career goal is to be able
to look back at my career and say that I made a difference in the music industry.
Ultimately, I would love for that to be by discovering an artist who becomes very
successful and managing his career throughout. That thought truly does drive me.
Growing up with parents who are high school sweethearts truly inspires me
to have a relationship like that. Having a companion that is with you by your side is a
very large understatement, and that is why a stable relationship and family is one of my
life goals. I understand that I am a very young age, but I do feel like that I have a firm
understanding of the man I want to be and the career I want to have. I look forward to
learning more about my future profession and myself. I also understand that having
such a narrow career goal may cause problems, so over the next few years I hope to
learn more about the music industry and the countless amount of jobs that exist within
it.
