Most golf courses contain several hazards that carry penalty
strokes should a player hit his or her ball into that area. For
instance, some hole include ponds, lakes, or creeks, all of
which present challenges to the player. If the ball is hit into
one of these water hazards and is unplayable, the player
must take a one-stroke penalty and either hit another ball
from the location from which they originally made the shot
or drop a ball near the hazard in line with the shot's path.

3. Golf
• If the player hits the ball out of bounds, a penalty stroke is
registered and another ball must be hit from near the same
location as the original shot. For instance, if the player's first
shot on any given hole goes out of bounds, the next shot
from the tee will count as the third shot.
Penalty strokes can also be assessed if the ball is hit into an
unplayable area, whether it be in a bush, buried in a bunker,
or against a tree. However, there are options in these
instances. The player can either move the ball within two
club lengths to a more accessible spot, walk back any
distance as long as the same line with the hole is
maintained, or return to where the original shot was made.
All options carry a one-stroke penalty.
