Knowing Your Resources and How to Use Them
College is one of the best times in your life but it can also be very stressful.
In order to make sure you are getting the most out of the experience, it is a
good idea to quickly learn what resources there are to help you succeed and
how to use them. Resources can range from academic help with tutoring and
course selection to finding a club or organization and everything in between.
College students are more successful and likely to graduate when they feel
connected to their major, college, and the activities they are involved in
match their interests. So being successful in college is much more than just
going to class and taking tests. My number-one tip to students is the follow-
ing: if you don’t know, then ask somebody. You might be surprised that just
asking one question can open the door to learning more than you expected
and to more opportunities you hadn’t even considered while planning your
path.
What else can you do? Build a network of people from various backgrounds
with access to different information. Get to know your advisor and find a
faculty member in your major that can be a mentor to you either formally or
informally. Also, talk to other students and see how your experiences differ
or how you can help one another.
We celebrated TRiO’s 50th
anniversary and Meet-N-Greet in August, which
was a good start for all of us to get to know each other. In September, we
had a big Transfer Reveal Party. Students found out what colleges we will
be visiting this year when balloons popped up out of boxes to reveal five
different schools. I look forward to working with the students as you discov-
er which resources will help you be successful in multiple ways. I will end
with a quote that highlights not only success, but what it all means.
“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” --

Happy Birthday TRiO!
If you have walked by our Student Support Service offices recently, you have seen birthday bal-
loons displayed in our main office. On August 28th
, during our Meet & Greet for students, we also
hosted a Birthday party for “TRiO.” Student Support Services (SSS) is part of a National program
called “TRIO.” This program has been in existence since 1964 when President Lyndon Johnson
signed into law this program as an initiative to encourage and assist students who wanted to at-
tend college. Originally, there were only three programs students could participate in, from the
middle school level through college. Now, there are eight programs extending from middle school
through college graduate level work. Our program, Student Support Services, is one of these pro-
grams. Our program is designed to help first generation, low-income, and students with disabili-
ties to succeed in college. If you have not inquired about what the SSS program can do for you,
please stop by and see all the services we have to offer! TRiO is a great program that works; it has
proven that for 50 years! Help us celebrate TRiO’s success by becoming a part of this worthwhile
program. Help us to continue another 50 years of continued success here at SCCC/ATS by join-
ing Student Support Services today! Happy Birthday and Congratulations Trio!!

Transfer Talk
Transferring, or the thought of transferring, can often be overwhelming. Choosing one school,
having to leave your friends, or moving away from the comfort of home can be consuming. Fortu-
nately, TRiO is here to help with this process! Although we cannot move with you or make the
actual process of moving easier, we can make the transition a little less overwhelming. Filling out
admission and scholarship applications, meeting deadlines, and setting up meetings with universi-
ties are all part of this process. Regardless of where you would like to transfer, we can assist you.
TRiO students can sign up for transfer trips at no cost to the student. To find out more information
about the transfer process, how we can assist you, or to learn about or sign up for transfer trips, stop
by the TRiO office (A125)! Also, sign up for the Transfer Workshop, with guest speaker Jon Arm-
strong (former SCCC/ATS Director of Admissions), at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29 to
learn more about the process.

Welcome Saints
Hello Saints land, Travis Boyd here! I am the new Education Specialist for Trio! I grew up on a
farm and ranch just outside of Turpin, Oklahoma, where I graduated from Turpin High School in
May of 2007. After graduation, I attended Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where I graduat-
ed in 2011with a BA in music, with concentrations in vocal performance and music pedagogy. Af-
ter receiving my degree, I took time to fulfill other aptitudes in the fields of computers and
healthcare. I then attended the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Okla-
homa in 2013-14 for music production and audio engineering, and received studio training and cer-
tification. I moved back home at the start of this summer, and it has been great catching up with old
friends and seeing all my family.
As the new Education Specialist for Student Support Services (TRiO), I will be wearing a few
different hats, but the main staple of my job is professional tutoring. I tutor all subjects, with a
focus on the general education credits that everyone must take. This includes courses in math,
English, hard/soft sciences, and the humanities. I can help with any other courses our TRiO stu-
dents are taking as well, such as reading or business. We also have two peer tutors with us this
semester, Luis Munoz and Jannette Coronado, who are super-smart! Although the peer tutors have
their areas of expertise, they can help in almost every subject, too. On the off chance that we cannot
help figure it out and point the student in the right direction, we can definitely send them to the per-
son that can! If you are interested in tutoring, you may drop by my office (A128) anytime, and the
peer tutors or I would be happy to help you.
