Rebecca Repa
Vice President, Clinical Support Services and Community Surgery, HHS
Dear friends,
If anyone ever doubted how strongly West Niagara residents feel about West Lincoln Memorial Hospital
(WLMH), our March 3rd
community meeting in Grimsby would surely have laid any doubts to rest.
We at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) were happy, and not surprised, to see approximately 250 people
packing the Livingston Activity Centre for a standing-room-only crowd. I would like to thank everyone
who attended that evening. The support that the hospital enjoys from this community is something to
be proud of. More importantly, as we plan for the redevelopment of WLMH, the level of engagement
from the community is very important.
The purpose of the March 3rd
community meeting was to share details about the planning HHS has
undertaken for the future of our care in Hamilton and West Niagara.
The key
programs we’re
proposing for
a redeveloped
WLMH are:
To re-cap the main points:
HHS is committed to the redevelopment of WLMH – it is a top priority
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has
made it very clear that we need to create an integrated plan
that shows how all HHS’ programs and services will work
together. This includes the care we provide at WLMH
Our vision for WLMH is based on input from many stakeholders, including
the communities we serve, our staff, physicians and partners.
Our plans, once complete, must be approved by the Hamilton
Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN and the MOHLTC
We have recommended to the MOHLTC that WLMH be a demonstration site
for integrated community care – this is one of the hospital’s major strengths
We see the future WLMH as a community hub – possibly locating
other community health services in the new building
There were many questions at the community meeting about hospital
beds – how many and what kind there will be. This is something
that is still being discussed by our physicians and staff and we will
communicate the outcomes of those discussions as soon as we can.
We think there’s an exciting future ahead for WLMH and we look
forward to continuing the conversation as we move forward.

4. What’s new
at WLMH
Open Visitation Hours
Program Launched at HHS
In March, HHS introduced the Open
Visitation Hours Program at all of its sites
including WLMH. “Patients have told us this
is important to them and we believe that
this will improve their experience while in
hospital,” says Pam Westover, Manager of
Patient Experience at HHS. Evidence has
shown that family and friends play a crucial
role in a patient’s well-being. Individuals
can now visit at any time as decided by the
patient and based on their care needs.
Expansion of x-ray
services to 24/7 Model
As of February, x-ray services at WLMH
shifted to an around the clock service. This
is an important change which will ensure
continuity of care and timely access to x-ray
services onsite. “Our priority is putting the
well-being of patients first and providing
uninterrupted care for those that need it
when they need it,” says Bryan Herechuk,
Manager of Diagnostic Imaging at WLMH.
New medication cabinets
to be implemented
WLMH is further enhancing patient safety
by modernizing our current system of
medication preparation and dispensing. The
implementation of new AcuDose (medication)
cabinets will allow for quick and easy access
to medications and real time data to monitor
for safety, accuracy, security and inventory
control. This initiative will ensure that
patients receive the right medication in the
right dose at the right time. This equipment
was funded through the generosity of
WLMH Foundation donors. Thank you!

WEST LINCOLN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL STRENGTHENING OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
IBM and Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) are joining
forces to help accelerate the development and
commercialization of new healthcare innovations in
Hamilton, across Ontario, and potentially around the world.
In March, the two announced plans to establish a new centre
in downtown Hamilton focused on healthcare innovation. The
centre – with both a physical and virtual collaboration space
– will give area healthcare providers, researchers, innovators
and entrepreneurs advanced technology tools and expertise
to improve healthcare outcomes and put Hamilton on
the map as a hub for healthcare innovation in Canada.
IBM is contributing access to an array of its Watson cognitive
and analytics software, expertise in cloud computing and
high-performance computing infrastructure, and a network of
global collaborators. HHS, with its cadre of more than 1,500
principal investigators and research staff, provides practical
industry expertise and a “real-world” test environment.
“Healthcare is facing tremendous challenges, and so we have
to innovate in order to be sustainable,” said Rob MacIsaac,
president CEO, HHS. “We’re creating an innovation space
that will attract others to bring their ideas and solutions
to the table for deployment across our healthcare system.
This multidisciplinary approach to innovation is the way of
the future providing opportunities to transform healthcare
in Hamilton, in Ontario, and potentially around the world.”
In two of the first projects, IBM and HHS will test how
IBM Watson cognitive and analytics capabilities can be
applied to HHS’ existing decision-support database, to
provide insight into how patients use the healthcare

in healthcare that position this industry for massive
transformation. This new era of cognitive computing
and our Watson technology is enabling health care
organizations worldwide to leap forward to advanced
solutions spanning clinical research, patient care and

6. Hosted by the Kinsmen Club of Grimsby, the 2016
Annual Mini-Putt Tournament raised over $9,000
in donations that will used for x-ray equipment at
WLMH. The annual event is always well received by
the community says Charted Kinsmen Club member
Denny Pratt: “It is part of our past and will continue to
be part of our future.”
Raising more than $105,000 over the past 21 years,
the tournament involves 120 dedicated golfers who
make their way through mini-putt holes set up at local
establishments throughout West Niagara.
“Local businesses are very responsive.” says Bruce
Bond, event organizer. “Each year they wait for the
Kinsmen visit and they have their cheques ready
for sponsorship.” Stops include the Grimsby Legion,
Rikochez Pub, Judge Jester, Station One, 40 Public
House, Teddy’s Fun Food Spirits and Different
strokes.
The members of the club believe that in addition
to volunteering time and service, supporting their
local hospital financially is just as important. Their
association with WLMH started in in 1966 when the
late Dr. Christopher Cones asked for their help to
furnish a patient room. In addition to the annual mini-
putt tournament, they have also donated TVs to the
hospital.
This year marks a special milestone for the Kinsmen
Club as they celebrate 50 years of community
service. WLMH and the Foundation are grateful to the
Kinsmen Club for its long-standing dedication to the
hospital and West Niagara residents.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s
mini-putt!

WEST LINCOLN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL STRENGTHENING OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
As an experienced community healthcare
professional, registered nurse Caroline Mitchell
has a deep understanding of patient care and has
continuously advocated to make our system better
for patients, families and teams.
“During my nursing studies, I had the privilege
of working in small communities, and that
experience is something that I have brought
with me throughout my career,” says Caroline,
the new Clinical Manager of the Operating
Rooms (OR), Same Day Surgery and Post-
Anesthetic Care Unit at WLMH. “When I came
across the opportunity to join the team at
WLMH, it just seemed like a perfect fit.”
Since joining Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) in
2000, Caroline has worked in the OR at McMaster
University Medical Centre as an adult patient care
nurse, a service resource for her colleagues and a
charge nurse. She also led several initiatives related
to the McMaster Perioperative Redevelopment
Project. Most recently, she was the clinical leader
working with the Juravinski Medical Program.
“Taking the position at Juravinski was a big change
for me, but, I knew I wanted to bring my knowledge
One of WLMH’s newest clinical leaders,
Kelly Gardner, has worked at Hamilton Health
Sciences (HHS) for 10 years and is also a long-
time resident of West Niagara. “It’s such a nice
feeling to be able to work in the place where
I live and am raising my family,” says Kelly.
“It’s also exciting to be part of a team that is
looked upon so highly by the community.”
Kelly is optimistic about the future of healthcare
in West Niagara. Over the years, Kelly says
that she has been most impressed with the
dedication of everyone at WLMH. “Living
in the area has really shown me the passion
and potential of WLMH and its staff.”
With a background in education, Kelly strives to

out of my comfort zone,” she says. “I am
truly excited to join the team at WLMH and
to be part of enhancing the partnership with
HHS. At the same time, as a resident of West
Niagara, I am also excited to be working in a
community that resonates so closely with me.”
Caroline is looking forward to contributing
even further to the spirit of communication
and collaboration at WLMH which is
essential to the delivery of strong services
in the community. “I am fortunate to work
at an organization that creates so much
potential through its own people and
through partnerships with others,” she
says. “In saying that, empowering staff
members at WLMH and encouraging
them to see this potential is my vision.”
Caroline received her nursing certifications
in the United Kingdom. In addition to her
work at HHS, Caroline has also been a

continue the great work that they do,” she
says. “Bringing new ideas and education
to the workplace is essential to providing
the highest quality care to our patients.”
Kelly started her healthcare career as a
nurse at London Health Sciences Centre
after graduating with a Bachelors of Science
in nursing from the University of Western
