Students Conduct Extensive Research
on a Topic of Interest
• Help students locate resources (through the school
library, local library, and online)
• Encourage students to reach out to real experts
and organizations (model ways to contact people
through websites, email, and Twitter)
• Guide students to refer to model texts as exemplars
for their own presentations
• Provide mini-lessons as needed (e.g., critically
evaluating sources, citing electronic sources,
interviewing, thesis development)
Sample Student Research Topics
• Is organic food worth the extra cost?
• Which is healthier: cafeteria fries or cookies?
• What is the “honey bee crisis” and how can I help?
• How do energy drinks impact teen athletes?
• What would happen if my family stopped eating
sugar for ten days?
• Why is Starbucks so successful?
• What should consumers know about farm-raised
fish?
• How does McDonald’s affect me if I don’t eat there?
