Application details
WHO IS FUND 17?
We are a nonprofit organization with the mission
to create economic opportunity in the 17 wards
of New Orleans by providing tailored training
and resources to underserved entrepreneurs.
Our entrepreneurs generally own informal, small-
scale and/or home-based businesses such as
food businesses, landscaping or creative
enterprises. We offer one-on-one business
development support through our Fellowship
Program and new Small Business Mentorship
Network. We also provide access to 0% interest
micro-loans through our partners at Kiva.
1
KIVA MICROFINANCE
Fund 17 is the Louisiana Small Business Advisor for Kiva, an
international nonprofit that leverages community support and trust
to lend business capital to entrepreneurs often excluded from the
traditional financial system. As an Advisor, Fund 17 assists
entrepreneurs in using the Kiva.org platform to access 0% interest
financing of up to $10,000.
THE FUND 17 FELLOWSHIP
Fund 17 fellows are passionate university
students who are eager to learn and make
an impact in the New Orleans business
community. After intensive training, fellows
work with local entrepreneurs to assist in a
variety of operations including:
legal registrations (LLC/city licensing),
business plan creation, accounting, social
media marketing and more.
WE NEED: Spanish speaking fellows to work
with our immigrant entrepreneurs!
3

more.

You will be paired with entrepreneurs based on their needs and your skills and strengths.
During the first meeting, you will map out an action plan that details the goals for the
relationship.
REGULAR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS
Meet with your entrepreneur every 1 week to help them build systems, file paperwork, market
on social media, or whatever else they need to grow.
WEEKLY SITE VISIT AND SEMINAR
Meet with your cohort and Fund 17 staff throughout the semester to continually learn and
improve your capacity as a fellow.
5
THE FELLOWSHIP:
AN IMMERSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
This spring, Fund 17 is introducing a new, expanded version of the fellowship
program which will include weekly site visits and guest lecturers. These two-hour
sessions will introduce fellows to community organizations throughout the city and
provide continual training on entrepreneurship, and social issues such as race,
gentrification, and economic development. The second hour of the meeting is
devoted to fellows sharing updates on work with their entrepreneurs and receiving
guidance from staff and community partners.
Fellows are eligible for internship or service credit from their university and should
prepare to fit this weekly session into their academic calendar like a class.
5
TWO FELLOWSHIP TRACKS
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TRACK

vary depending on the needs of the

ENTREPRENEUR KHULU + FELLOW RUTH
"Fund 17 has been incredible. A lot of the paperwork that I needed
done or didn't know where to start, they helped me with. They helped
me with great ideas, photos, marketing, getting my online store up
and running. Even just knowing that there is always someone I can call
and that Fund 17 will be there."
-"Khulu" Buckner, Fund 17 entrepreneur
Khulu, an urban gardener in Midcity, is the owner of a
line of homemade jams and preserves.
Ruth, snacking on Khulu's homemade jam, is a Senior at Tulane studying
