rough draft of presentation explaining why we need to create an immersive VR experience for scientists and archeologists to explore shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources ahead of time for improved outcomes.
4. YOSEMITE AND CARLETON WATKINS
Yosemite, whose establishment in 1864 is largely credited to a photographer
named Carleton Watkins.
Watkins’ stereographic photos of the park were some of the images of Yosemite
that made it back to the East Coast.
5. “PARTLY ON THE STRENGTH OF WATKINS’S PHOTOGRAPHS,
PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN SIGNED THE 1864 BILL THAT
DECLARED THE VALLEY INVIOLABLE, THUS PAVING THE WAY FOR
THE NATIONAL PARKS SYSTEM”
- Getty Museum
6. "THERE CAN BE NO GREATER
ISSUE THAN THAT OF
CONSERVATION IN THIS
COUNTRY."
Theodor Roosevelt. - Confession of Faith
Speech, Progressive National Convention,
Chicago, IL, August 6, 1912.
7. Roosevelt used his authority as president to protect wildlife and public lands by
creating the United States Forest Service. This service established 150 national
forests, 51 federal bird reserves, 4 national game reserves, 5 national parks and
18 national monuments.
Roosevelt was not alone in his conservation efforts. In perhaps one of the most
famous camping trips in history, President Roosevelt spent three nights camping
with John Muir. During the 1903 camping trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains,
Muir persuaded Roosevelt to return the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove to
federal protection as part of Yosemite National Park.
10. Many environmental issues are complex and difficult to explain
fully. Phenomena like climate change, ocean acidification,
extinction, and glacier erosion are especially challenging to
illustrate, either because they’re happening in slow motion or
because they’re evolving in remote places that few people see.
15. DIVERLAURA’S PYRAMID FOR CONSERVATION
“Stick” - regulations, legislation
“Carrot” - Engaged, activated public
Without public support
You can’t pass legislation.
Small actions that empower
Your public matter.

FILMING ENVIRONMENTAL 360, BUT KNOW I NOW NEED TO DO MORE
33. COLLABORATION IS KEY
▸ TO FOSTER ENGAGEMENT THE PUBLIC
NEEDS TO KNOW ‘SOMETHING’ EXISTS
▸ STARTED OUT WITH IDEA OF EXPERIENTIAL
DIVING GAME
▸ COLLABORATING WITH MARINE IMAGINING
TECHNOLOGIES / EVAN KOVACS (WHOI,
NOAA, NATIONAL PARKS)
▸ REALIZED BEFORE GAME WE NEED A TOOL
TO HELP ARCHEOLOGISTS AND SCIENTISTS
PRESERVE OUR CULTURAL RESOURCES
EXPLORE AND INVESTIGATE
PLACES OTHERWISE OUT OF REACH
