                         GENERAL CHEMISTRY-I (1411)
                                  S.I. # 1

1. Chemistry is the study of:
the properties of materials and the changes that materials undergo.

2. Matter is:
anything that has mass and occupies space.

3. What is a homogeneous mixture? A mixture that is uniform throughout.
Homogeneous mixtures are also called: _________________. solutions
Give an example:____________________. air

4. What is a heterogeneous mixture? A mixture that varies in composition, properties,
and appearance throughout.
Give an example: ____________________. Rocks or wood

5. All Gaseous Mixtures are all _________________________. Homogeneous

6. Define intensive and extensive properties of a substance and give examples.
Intensive: Do not depend on the amount of a substance.
temperature, melting point, and density. Used to identify substances
Extensive: Does depend on the amount of a substance.
               Mass, volume.

7. Define Accuracy & Precision:

Accuracy: refers to how closely a measured value agrees with the correct value
       (hitting the bulls eye)
Precision: refers to how closely individual measurements agree with one another.
       (hitting the same spot repetitiously)

6. Give the common s.i. unit and symbol used for:

Mass Kilogram kg
Length Meter m
Time Second s
Temperature Kelvin K
Amount Mole mol
Area Length times Length m2
Volume Area times Length m3
Density Mass per unit kg / m 3
Speed Distance per unit m/s
Key
