There’s been a misunderstanding.
Co-founder,Lab80

Keywon Chung정기원
Then you need to make up your
mind first, that you can and want to
do it. Sadly there are many mental
blocks that pull us back.I hope this
talk debunks some of the
assumptions and misunderstandings.
So You Wanna Change the World?
4. 절망
A Wisdom from J.R.R Tolkien
Despair
Before we talk about our hope of
changing the world,let’s get the
notion of despair and helplessness
out of the way.
You’d normally quote the Bible or a
philosopher,or Steve Jobs here,but
I’d say it’s time to inject some deep
thinking from the Tolkien universe!
Jaded Much?
Despair = Simple misunderstanding. Despair is a personal decision, not
something the world forces on you.
With that in mind, shall we look at a
few more common misunderstandings?
Despair Is a Choice
Whether you choose to despair or
make up your mind that you can change the world,
it is a personal choice.
Despair is a personal decision,not
something the world forces on you.
Despair Is a Choice
Whether you choose to despair or
make up your mind that you can change the world,
it is a personal choice.
Whether you are ten,thirty,or seventy,
when you make up your mind to
change the world, you are choosing a
way of life.
It Is a Life Choice
The world judges you by... Your company, the world, your family
will divide everyone into these two
categories:
How Can My Work Matter?
IMPACT Those who have impact on the
organization,results,culture,
others,family,and the world vs.
those who do not.
Your Impact on the World
To have impact with your career...
A few principles I’m upholding to turn
myself into an impactful designer.
Our Agenda Today:
You should be able to to define & measure your impact.
In order to increase your impact,
naturally, you should first be able to
define and measure your impact.
You Can’t Manage
What You Don’t Measure
14. This is what I came up with one,day on
a piece of paper. Yours may differ.
Mine has two axes:
X axis measures how broad an
audience my work reached.
Y axis measures how much I was
personally accountable for the work.
My Metrics of Impact
15. Looking at some of my work
experiences:
I joined Microsoft after college,working
on Office 2003 and 2007 that are used
by over 700M users.
Microsoft Office (2002-2005)
16. Then I developed product,service,and
branding proposals for corporate
clients,working with team of design,
human factors,engineering,and
business experts.
IDEO (2005-2007)
17. My master’s work in tangible,wearable,
and gesture interface included
conceiving,designing,prototyping,
developing applications,promoting,
testing and presenting it to the
academic conferences.
MIT Media Lab (2008-2010)
18. In my recent career,I have been
intentionally decreasing my reach,from
700M mass users,to corporate decision
makers and their market of perhaps
under 1M customers, and to the smaller
community of experts in HCI,
interaction design,and media art.
Decrease in Reach
19. On the other hand, the Y axis value has
been streaily increasing.
Increase in Accountability
20. Three points in my career fall into
these coordinates in the graph.
What does the size of each rectangle
from (0,0) to (x,y) mean? It would
indicate my personal impact on the
world.
Based on this simple framework,I’ve
made it my goal to maximize the size
of my next rectangle.
Reach xAccountability = My Impact
21. And that’s exactly why I am doing a
startup now.
Facebook’s user base is bigger than
Office at over 800M users. Chances are,
my startup won’t be a Facebbok,and
most startups fail.But there are
numerous services out there that are
used by a few million users although
you may not have heard of them.
If I can start a service that is used by
some millions of people,my personal
impact on the world will be much
bigger than anything I’ve done!
Reach xAccountability = My Impact
22. 하수
Indirect Impact
Mind you,if you embarked on your
startup jorney because people tell you
it’s cool or which problem to solve,
maximizing the size of the rectangle
won’t mean much.
One Caveat...
Direct Impact
Execute someone
else’s desires
Make your own desires
a reality
23. When we can’t fathom that action plan
ourselves,we tend to defer to the
authority.
Here’s yet another article claiming that
the Seoul City goverment plans to
mass-produce the Korean Steve Jobs.
That’s yet another misunderstanding
that you can lead a happy life based on
an authority figure’s definition of
success,be it your goverment,your
corporation,or your parents.
It’s not the government policy,or an
academic theory that drive innovation
and define what your success looks like.
Happy Cog?
Personal desires drive change & innovaiton.
Because,however peculiar your desires
may look first,our personal desires
drive change and innovation.
Why?
26. Here’s an example of an ongoing
collective desire: Computing.
In one sentence,the history of
computing is a story of numerous
people pursuing their desire to build
machines that augment,match,and
surpass human intelligence.
From Peculiar Desires to
Universal Reality
Mechanical Turk (1784)
Automatic chess playing machine;
turns out to be fake.
ENIAC (1946)
Real calculating machine for
military tasks.

Does it directly reflect my desires?
Let’s update the graph with this
criterion as the new Y axis:
Not simply about how much I
contributed,but about whether the
work reflected what I believe in or
stand for.
YAxis Redefined
28. Doesn’t this shed a new light to the
same graph? Why am I doing a startup,
and why are you building something?:
To directly manifest my desires onto the
world.
Real Reason I Am Doing a Startup
Picturing My Success into Existence
Changing the world is really simple.
Just follow these steps:
1.Be aware of my own desires
2.Express them
3.Come up with ideas
4.Pursue those ideas
The problem is,most people never get
to even realizw what they want to do.
So What Do You Desire?
31. The method I recommend for the

fictions...

45. Keywon is a cofounder and customer zero
of HelloMoney, where she leads the product
design and execution of the popular social
investing service.
HelloMoney encourages everyone, even
students and grandmas, to invest in
companies they believe in, and promote
the investment to their social networks.
It has taken old boys’ investing world by
storm, “folding investing into the young
generation’s identity... as it should be,”
according to the Forbes magazine.
HelloMoney is now beloved by 1M users, has
been profitable thanks to its lean teams
based in US and South Korea, and is valued
upward of $100M by their latest investors
including Fred Wilson and Paul Graham.
Making investing personal and
empowering everyman is a no-brainer for
Keywon. Following her passion for bottom-
up innovation, she has recently invested in
a peer-guided travel startup and launched
a nonprofit to provide finance and business
skills to women of all ages.
