9. QUIZ: Which Character from 'Revenge' Are You?
10. Social Media Strategy
3. STRATEGY STATEMENT
The primary strategy for the series is to position it as the number one television drama that incorporates
both thrill and mystery. The series focuses on a strong female lead with ambitious goals to take down
anyone who wronged her father. Current television lacks a vengeful female lead who will take down
anyone who gets in her way which is why women ages 18 to 34 will be drawn to the show. The Emily
Thorne/Amanda Clarke persona is captivating to young women everywhere because of the
independence and determination that she encompasses.
The revenge aspect of the show can relate to anyone who has felt betrayed or is trying to make things
right. Women may be drawn to the series simply because of the female lead however, the thrill of the show
doesnât subject itself to a specific audience, it reaches out to everyone. With a secondary audience of
adults 18 to 49, Revenge is a series that engages all everyone.

9. PRODUCTION NOTES
Passionate but Challenging, Revenge
Canadian native Emily VanCampâs first on-screen appearance caught the attention of
Dawsonâs Creek writer Greg Berlanti from her performance in the WB show Glory Days.
Berlanti stated that VanCamp reminded him of Katie Holmes and he âdesperately needed
to work with her.â He immediately cast her in his show Everwood also for the WB network.
After playing supporting roles for most of her acting career thus far, VanCamp was
shocked when Mike Kelley, show creator, asked her to play the headlining role of Amanda
Clarke/Emily Thorne in âRevenge.â âWhen I first read the script I hadnât worked since I
finished Brothers & Sisters because I really felt creatively stunted on Brothers & Sisters,
and wanted to make sure that the next thing I did was something I was very passionate
about. And more importantly that challenged meâ says VanCamp. âWhen I read
âRevenge,â it was all of that and more. Amanda/Emily is such an interesting, complex
character and you donât get to see that a lot for women, in terms of great, strong roles.â
10. PRODUCTION NOTES
From Chicago to The Hamptons
After finishing up the CBS show, Swingtown, Mike Kelley wanted to link up with a
network that was a better fit for his sensibilities. The president of ABC Entertainment at
the time, Paul Lee, was interested in producing a show based on the novel The Count of
Monte Cristo which sparked Kelleyâs interest. âI loved The Count of Monte Cristo, but there
was no way one could do a show like that in linear fashionâ says Kelley, âSo my take on it
Revenge was to do it through the eyes of a wronged child and have her come back for
revenge. I sat down with this idea that already had a lot of enthusiasm behind it from the
network and studio and in one afternoon, it all began to break quickly.â The pilot director,
Phillip Noyce, took everything Kelley was envisioning and made it better. Noyce made
Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne more of a badass with martial arts training than people
were initially expecting which ended up being a huge part of her character. âI knew when I
met Emily VanCamp, that I instantly wanted her to play the lead role of Emily
Thorne/Amanda Clarkeâ says Kelley. âShe spent a better part of her career playing the
every girl and that quality was important to me because you want Emily Thorne as your
best friend, but at her core, sheâs diabolical and in many ways a sociopath.â
11. PRODUCTION NOTES
What Do You Mean Itâs Not the Hamptons?
While Revenge is set in the Hamptons, the pilot episode was actually shot at several real
locations in North Carolina. Emilyâs beachfront cottage is actually located in Southport,
North Carolina. The interior scenes in the pilot were filmed in homes and businesses around
North Carolina, including shots of Jack Porterâs bar, The Stowaway, which were filmed in
Southportâs local dive Fishy Fishy. Interior shots of the Grayson mansion were filmed in
Landfall, a community in Wilmington. The producers borrowed the actual inside of an
estate to portray it as the Graysonâs home. When the series got picked by ABC, replica sets
of the North Carolina homes were built at MBS Media Campus in Manhattan Beach, CA
where the show is licensed. By the second episode, the series began filming in Los Angeles
on a set built to recreate the look of the original beach house.
12. EMILY VANCAMP
âThose big places are slightly intimidating!â Emily VanCamp laughs after switching plans to meet up at a
small, low-key cafe instead of the A-list restaurant where you hang when youâve officially made it in
Hollywood. VanCamp may be a recognizable star on the streets of LA, but she is definitely not ready to
give up her normal 20-something lifestyle.
VanCamp broke into television with supporting roles on Everwood and Brothers & Sisters, but even those
roles couldnât fully prepare her for her first lead role in Revenge. After spending four years on Brother &
Sisters VanCamp felt as though it was time for something new and Revenge was the perfect opportunity
for that. VanCamp was cast to play the emotionally distressed Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne who seeks
vengeance on those who were involved in framing her father. Her role forces her to dive into two
conflicting personas as she attempts to balance her double lives.
âI really wanted the next thing I do to be challenging and take me in a different direction,â VanCamp says.
âThis role is certainly a challenge and itâs a much bigger load, so it is a little more intimidating. But in so
many ways, this is where I want to be.â As Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke, VanCamp is front and center
alongside Madeleine Stowe causing her to smile, cry, love, and scheme- sometimes all in the same scene.
The toughest part of the role, she says, is âbalancing the good and the evilâ of her character at all times. âItâs
a fine line to walk,â she says. âTo find moments of vulnerability even though she does all these things.â
A big part of the Amanda Clarke/Emily Thorne persona is that she is trained to fight and incredibly
skilled which can be physically demanding. âIâm big into pilates but am trying to get back into yoga as
well,â VanCamp says when asked how she prepared for her role. âLuckily I had ballet training to help me
perform. At the end of the day, a fight scene is choreography; weâre developing the character as we go,â
she explains. âIâve definitely been thrown for a few loops -- trying to memorize the Japanese skills. But
thatâs what I love most about this character. This is a girl who has gone off and trained intensively for eight
years. She knows how to fight.â
In spite of growing up in the limelight, VanCamp still manages to separate her craft from her privacy. If itâs
friday night, youâd be more likely to find VanCamp on the couch with some friends than on the glamorous
red carpet.
