2. ELEMENTS OF A SOCRATIC SEMINAR
1. The text: for our class, this will be I, Tituba: Black Witch of Salem
2. The questions raised: these are your claims about the effects of
intersectionality that you will be discussing during the seminar
3. The seminar leader: I will be mediating the discussion to ensure that all
students are discussing the ideas of the text
4. The participants: YOU!
3. HOW IT WORKS
• Students are arranged in a “Fishbowl” format (inner and outer circle)
• During our Socratic seminar, only students who are in the inner circle will
be discussing their thoughts about intersectionality and its effects. Other
students in this inner circle will build upon what others are saying by
asking questions to elaborate, clarifying, paraphrasing, or summarizing
what the speaker has shared.
• Students in the outer circle will be listening to their peers
• All students will be taking notes as their peers are discussing
4. REMINDERS
• Be prepared to participate and ask good questions
• Rebuttals must be respectful
• Allow each speaker to complete their thoughts before you speak
• Refer to the text often to provide evidence
• Discuss the idea of intersectionality in I, Tituba: Black Witch of Salem, not
your own biases or personal experiences
