4. INTENDED USE OF SOLMAG
®
Magnetic Bead Separation:
Bench-top automated system for quick purification of nucleic acids from bio-
specimens using magnetic bead separation technology.
Liquid Handling System:
Liquid handling automation, using pre-filled reagent cartridges
For research and in vitro diagnosis use
5. FUNCTION PRINCIPLE
Advanced Liquid Handling Magnetic Bead Separation
Sample Material Lysis Step Binding Step
Magnetic Separation Washing Step Elution Step; Purified Nucleic Acid
6. CORE TECHNOLOGIES
The Solis-Charger
®
Technology
The Solis-ChargerR Technology is a novel magnetic bead-based technology
that provides a switchable surface charge dependent on the pH and salt
concentration of the surrounding buffer to facilitate nucleic acid purification.
In low pH conditions, the magnetic beads have a positive charge that binds
the negatively charged nucleic acid backbone (see figure1 below). Proteins
and other contaminants are not bound and are simply washed away in an
aqueous wash buffer. To elute nucleic acids, the charge on the surface of the
bead is neutralized by raising the pH to 8.0 using a low salt elution buffer (see
figure below). Purified nucleic acid elutes instantly into this elution buffer, and
is ready for use in downstream applications.
7. CORE TECHNOLOGIES
The 2D CatcherMag
®
Technology for Sample Preparation
The 2D CatcherMag® technology is a novel magnetic bead-based
modification technology. The 2D CatcherMag® is modified and designed for
different sample types to optimized collection/extraction result. With the
nano-scale modification on the 2D CatcherMag®, we can provide the users a
better solution while collecting the samples for reliable polymerase chain
reaction results and accurate data analysis.

17. WORK STATION
Mid to high throughputs
• >= 24 preps/run
Programmable robot arm controlled
by separated computer
Big instrument dimension / heavy
weight
Complicated setup procedures
/require additional training before
operation
Higher instrument and consumable
cost
• > US$ 80K
Ex:
• Qiasymphony(Qiagne)
• Cobus (Roche)
STANDALONE

• < 24 preps/run
Built-in micro-processor and protocols,
no PC required
Small Footprint / compact
Easy setup and operation steps
Lower instrument and consumable cost
• <US$10K
Ex:
• SolMag (Solison), EZ1 Advanced
(Qiagen), MagNa Pure Compact
(Roche), iPrep (Invitrogen) … etc
COMPARISON WITH WORK STATION
18. Advantage
• Fully walk away automation:
minimum procedures of set up,
which require three simple steps.
• Enable to handle a wide range
of volumes on starting materials
and elutes
• Better extraction quality
Disadvantage
• Bigger instrument size and
heavier weight
• Higher instrument cost
Ex:
• SolMag (Solison), EZ1 Advanced
(Qiagen), MagNa Pure Compact
(Roche), iPrep (Invitrogen) … etc
MAGNETIC ROD
Advantage
• Lower kit price
Disadvantage
• Easy to have magnetic bead
residues in eluted products
• Limited or fixed sample / elute
volume handling choice
• Semi-Automation: tedious
manual set up procedure
required, kills time and cause
humor errors.
Ex:
• Maxwell (Promega)
• KingFisher (Thermo Fisher)
