What do I like most about my work:
It`s	very	challenging	as	it	gets	me
out	of	my	comfort	zone	and	makes
me	consider	a	lot	of	different	ideas	to
have	the	diaspora	products	in	place
for	high	customer	uptake.
I spend my Friday nights	by	enjoying
a	glass	of	wine	with	my	girlfriends.	If
I	don’t	want	to	be	out	I	will	spend	my
time	with	family	watching	movie	at
home.
My Favourite things: I	love	the
colour	purple.	I	also	love	wearing	high
heels,	whether	I	can	walk	in	them	the
entire	day	is	another	story	altogether.
I	use	two	pairs	at	the	office,	a	practical
everyday	medium	sized	heel	and
a	glam	one	where	minimal	walking
occurs.
Family:	I	have	one	son	aged	6	years.
Most useless piece of advice ever
given to me:	Nothing	is	possible	as
I	believe	everything	is	possible	and
happens	for	a	reason.
Where do I see myself in 5 years:
Growing	into	a	senior	managerial
position.	I	would	also	like	to	increase
my	family	by	having	a	daughter.	I	am
also	thinking	increasing	my	linguistic
skills	by	learning	a	foreign	language
like	French.

• You can never know everything. A degree of ignorance is always needed as there
isn’t any 100% sure way of getting everything correct. Mistakes give an opportunity
to learn. We had an issue with packaging when we first produced peanuts but we
realized it and looked for new ways of doing it better.
• Those who are ready to sweat are those who will make it as success is 1% genius 99
% perspiration. You need to have thick skin to be able to solve the challenges that
come naturally. There is a litany of failures behind every successful entrepreneur.
ATHANAS MATHEKA
KEY LEARNINGS
The common picture of an entrepreneur today is a harassed,
directionless individual. This is so because there is very little
evidence of an inventory of entrepreneurs in Kenya, and the
challenge of ‘breaking the stereotypical image’ of a boot strap-
ping entrepreneur is so severe. Models of entrepreneurship
are not well documented and we lack rigorous studies focused
on successful entrepreneurs in Kenya. At present, such work
is limited to a handful of case studies. Yet, we have successful
entrepreneurs who are focused on the global brand space and
are building great companies.
Are there common features of successful entrepreneurship in
Kenya? To what extent are they different from features of suc-
cessful entrepreneurship in other parts of the world? This is
what Enablis Kenya set out to try and identify and gave birth to
this project to tell the story of Enablis member entrepreneurs.
Enablis programs are designed to identify the ‘Top entrepre-
neurs’, help them build sustainable profitable enterprises and
strong worldwide brands anchored in Africa.Enablis creates an
environment that will attract innovative growth-oriented firms,
incubators and network where the pool of entrepreneurs can
learn industry practices, identify market opportunities, accu-
mulate capital, and form contacts.
“Enablis programs are designed to identify the ‘Top
Entrepreneurs’ and help them build susutainable
profitable enterprises and strong worldwide brands
anchored in Africa.”
I would like to thank everyone involved in the making this
work a success. In particular, I would like to express my thanks
to Raspberry Haven Ltd- the publishing team led by Hope
Mwinzi, who is also an Enablis member on the tireless work
they did, travelling across the country to get the stories and
putting out a wonderful, succinct interpretation of the chal-
lenges and success of the individuals.
All the entrepreneurs who allowed their story to be told-thank
you for granting us a peek into your deepest area of your busi-
ness, challenges and life. May the coming years be a testament
of your hard-work in building your enterprises.
Regards and best wishes,
LILLIAN MARENYA

It gives me great pleasure to be part of the
Kenya Association of Investment Groups and
to write this foreword for the handbook. The
handbook is a useful tool, tailor-made for in-
vestment groups.
Investment Groups, commonly referred to as
Chamas, have existed in Kenya for a long time.
Today, Chamas have transformed. There are
more people involved in Chamas both men
and women; at work, church, school and neigh-
borhoods. These groups have diversified their
investments from buying shares at the Nairobi
Securities Exchange (NSE) to making other cap-
ital intensive investments in real estate, export
and import business, among others.
The Chama movement is worth billions. It is
estimated that there are about 300,000 groups
in Kenya today and some have become success
stories with huge investment portfolios.
The Kenya Investment Authority, a statutory
body mandated to promote investments in
Kenya for both domestic and foreign investors,
is willing to partner with KAIG to provide infor-
mation on investor ready Vision 2030 projects
and other investment opportunities, invest-
ment procedures licensing as well as facilitation
services to ensure fast and hassle free investing.
For regular updates on investment opportuni-
ties and new developments in the investment
scene, visit the KenInvest website: www.invest-
mentkenya.com.

Benefits.
BENEFITS OF BEING A
CHAMA MEMBER
IT LOWERS THE RISK LEVEL
The risk of personal loss
for any one individual is
minimized because the
Chama makes the investment as
a group. If profits don’t appear as pro-
jected the loss is minimal. Chama as a
Limited Liability Company ensures min-
imal legal risks to you and your family.
Any distress (even personal) is shared
through the different share ownership.
1
IT DIMINISHES OR ELIMI-
NATES FEAR OF INVEST-
ING
Most budding investors
are terrified at the thought of
investing on their own, probably due
to the risk of failure and a feeling of
inadequacy. A group therefore offers a
solution transferring the pressure from
the individual and spreading it to the
group.
4
IT CREATES LASTING
FRIENDSHIPS
Chamas are a terrific way
to learn, make valuable
contacts, and meet people with
similar interests. Lasting friendships
can be forged. It is crucial to maintain
a friendly and fun atmosphere in the
Chama, so as to encourage healthy in-
terpersonal relationships. In successful
Chamas, you can attain‘real’friendship
and commitment to each other.
5
IT CREATES A SOURCE OF
WEALTH
You can save the level of
capital you require for a proj-
ect much faster than you would
as an individual. You also benefit from
the power of compounding your larger
pool of savings. Compounding works
through re-investing all your profits on
investments to generate more. This cre-
ates a long- term return on wealth. It is
also possible for your Chama to outlive
you and benefit the next generation
especially if it’s a limited company.
6
IT PROVIDES DISCIPLINE
AND STRUCTURE
It forces you to acquire a
discipline of saving. Saving
on an individual level proves dif-
ficult for many. Participating in a group
on the other hand ensures mandatory
saving in the form of regular contri-
butions. As an individual, it is easier
to break your commitment especially
when emergencies crop up.
2
IT ALLOWS MEMBERS TO
LEARN
You benefit from shared
ideas and experiences. An
investment club is a more
effective way to learn about investing,
as opposed to a classroom situation
since it exposes the member to real
investment situations. A good Chama
offers it’s members the opportunity
to interact, research, analyze and spot
the most viable opportunities. With
enough eyes and ears within the group,
an informed and rational decision can
be formed thus providing a learning
environment.
3
/ grow. protect. invest.
RULES FOR CHAMA
SUCCESS
INVEST REGULARLY: Build up your capital first before beginning
your investments. Once you begin the investment process, don’t
stop. Try to avoid holding your contributions for more than three
months before investing in opportunities.
REINVEST DIVIDENDS/EARNINGS: Take a long- term view to your
investment and re-invest back all your profits for the first couple of
years. This will have tremendous impact on your overall return in the
future.
INVEST IN GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES: The purpose of the Chama
is to grow your capital, and the investments should reflect that. This
isn’t for cash that you may need in a medical emergency or to cover
monthly expenses.
DIVERSIFY YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO: Diversify your
assets and portfolio in terms of investment type, sector and level of
risk.

I spend my Friday nights by enjoying a glass of wine with my girlfriends. If I don’t want to be out I will spend my time with family watching movie at home. My Favourite things: I love the colour purple. I also love wearing high heels, whether I can walk in them the entire day is another story altogether. I use two pairs at the office, a practical everyday medium sized heel and a glam one where minimal walking occurs. Family: I have one son aged 6 years. Most useless piece of advice ever given to me: Nothing is possible as I believe everything is possible and happens for a reason. Where do I see myself in 5 years: Growing into a senior managerial position. I would also like to increase my family by having a daughter. I am also thinking increasing my linguistic skills by learning a foreign language like French. In December, the team at the Customer Experience Centre in Westland’s decided to begin working out together. We began this year and we meet for 30 minutes in the breakout area and then go back to our desks. We do Zumba and stretch. Due to the increasing numbers, we are changing the venue to Westlands Primary. Keeping fit is a lifestyle which gives you energy and keeps lifestyles diseases away. We enjoy doing this together. We asked the team about their health habits and asked some of them to score themselves on a scale of 1-5. 1= Bad; 5= Great Kenneth Gitonga tells us more about Work Out Thursdays. • 6. BOOKS • You can never know everything. A degree of ignorance is always needed as there isn’t any 100% sure way of getting everything correct. Mistakes give an opportunity to learn. We had an issue with packaging when we first produced peanuts but we realized it and looked for new ways of doing it better. • Those who are ready to sweat are those who will make it as success is 1% genius 99 % perspiration. You need to have thick skin to be able to solve the challenges that come naturally. There is a litany of failures behind every successful entrepreneur. ATHANAS MATHEKA KEY LEARNINGS The common picture of an entrepreneur today is a harassed, directionless individual. This is so because there is very little evidence of an inventory of entrepreneurs in Kenya, and the challenge of ‘breaking the stereotypical image’ of a boot strap- ping entrepreneur is so severe. Models of entrepreneurship are not well documented and we lack rigorous studies focused on successful entrepreneurs in Kenya. At present, such work is limited to a handful of case studies. Yet, we have successful entrepreneurs who are focused on the global brand space and are building great companies. Are there common features of successful entrepreneurship in Kenya? To what extent are they different from features of suc- cessful entrepreneurship in other parts of the world? This is what Enablis Kenya set out to try and identify and gave birth to this project to tell the story of Enablis member entrepreneurs. Enablis programs are designed to identify the ‘Top entrepre- neurs’, help them build sustainable profitable enterprises and strong worldwide brands anchored in Africa.Enablis creates an environment that will attract innovative growth-oriented firms, incubators and network where the pool of entrepreneurs can learn industry practices, identify market opportunities, accu- mulate capital, and form contacts. “Enablis programs are designed to identify the ‘Top Entrepreneurs’ and help them build susutainable profitable enterprises and strong worldwide brands anchored in Africa.” I would like to thank everyone involved in the making this work a success. In particular, I would like to express my thanks to Raspberry Haven Ltd- the publishing team led by Hope Mwinzi, who is also an Enablis member on the tireless work they did, travelling across the country to get the stories and putting out a wonderful, succinct interpretation of the chal- lenges and success of the individuals. All the entrepreneurs who allowed their story to be told-thank you for granting us a peek into your deepest area of your busi- ness, challenges and life. May the coming years be a testament of your hard-work in building your enterprises. • 7. BOOKS T H E C H A M A H A N D B O O K 7 It gives me great pleasure to be part of the Kenya Association of Investment Groups and to write this foreword for the handbook. The handbook is a useful tool, tailor-made for in- vestment groups. Investment Groups, commonly referred to as Chamas, have existed in Kenya for a long time. Today, Chamas have transformed. There are more people involved in Chamas both men and women; at work, church, school and neigh- borhoods. These groups have diversified their investments from buying shares at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) to making other cap- ital intensive investments in real estate, export and import business, among others. The Chama movement is worth billions. It is estimated that there are about 300,000 groups in Kenya today and some have become success stories with huge investment portfolios. The Kenya Investment Authority, a statutory body mandated to promote investments in Kenya for both domestic and foreign investors, is willing to partner with KAIG to provide infor- mation on investor ready Vision 2030 projects and other investment opportunities, invest- ment procedures licensing as well as facilitation services to ensure fast and hassle free investing. For regular updates on investment opportuni- ties and new developments in the investment scene, visit the KenInvest website: www.invest- mentkenya.com. Dr. Moses Ikiara, PhD, MBS Managing Director Kenya Investment Authority (KenInvest) //FOREWORD / grow. protect. invest. T H E C H A M A H A N D B O O K T H E C H A M A H A N D B O O K1 2 1 3 Benefits. BENEFITS OF BEING A CHAMA MEMBER IT LOWERS THE RISK LEVEL The risk of personal loss for any one individual is minimized because the Chama makes the investment as a group. If profits don’t appear as pro- jected the loss is minimal. Chama as a Limited Liability Company ensures min- imal legal risks to you and your family. Any distress (even personal) is shared through the different share ownership. 1 IT DIMINISHES OR ELIMI- NATES FEAR OF INVEST- ING Most budding investors are terrified at the thought of investing on their own, probably due to the risk of failure and a feeling of inadequacy. A group therefore offers a solution transferring the pressure from the individual and spreading it to the group. 4 IT CREATES LASTING FRIENDSHIPS Chamas are a terrific way to learn, make valuable contacts, and meet people with similar interests. Lasting friendships can be forged. It is crucial to maintain a friendly and fun atmosphere in the Chama, so as to encourage healthy in- terpersonal relationships. In successful Chamas, you can attain‘real’friendship and commitment to each other. 5 IT CREATES A SOURCE OF WEALTH You can save the level of capital you require for a proj- ect much faster than you would as an individual. You also benefit from the power of compounding your larger pool of savings. Compounding works through re-investing all your profits on investments to generate more. This cre- ates a long- term return on wealth. It is also possible for your Chama to outlive you and benefit the next generation especially if it’s a limited company. 6 IT PROVIDES DISCIPLINE AND STRUCTURE It forces you to acquire a discipline of saving. Saving on an individual level proves dif- ficult for many. Participating in a group on the other hand ensures mandatory saving in the form of regular contri- butions. As an individual, it is easier to break your commitment especially when emergencies crop up. 2 IT ALLOWS MEMBERS TO LEARN You benefit from shared ideas and experiences. An investment club is a more effective way to learn about investing, as opposed to a classroom situation since it exposes the member to real investment situations. A good Chama offers it’s members the opportunity to interact, research, analyze and spot the most viable opportunities. With enough eyes and ears within the group, an informed and rational decision can be formed thus providing a learning environment. 3 / grow. protect. invest. RULES FOR CHAMA SUCCESS INVEST REGULARLY: Build up your capital first before beginning your investments. Once you begin the investment process, don’t stop. Try to avoid holding your contributions for more than three months before investing in opportunities. REINVEST DIVIDENDS/EARNINGS: Take a long- term view to your investment and re-invest back all your profits for the first couple of years. This will have tremendous impact on your overall return in the future. INVEST IN GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES: The purpose of the Chama is to grow your capital, and the investments should reflect that. This isn’t for cash that you may need in a medical emergency or to cover monthly expenses. DIVERSIFY YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO: Diversify your assets and portfolio in terms of investment type, sector and level of risk. grow. protect. invest.
