Unit 1: The Nature of Stress
Information to Remember:
Key Learning Point: Definitions of Stress: In eastern philosophies, stress is considered to be an
absence of inner peace, while Western culture describes stress as a loss of emotional control.
Physiologically speaking, stress is defined as the rate of wear and tear on the body. Seyle observed
that whether a situation was perceived as good (e.g., a job promotion) or bad (e.g., the loss of a job),
the physiological response or arousal was very similar. (Seaward, 2009).
Key Learning Point: Types of Stress: Eustress, neustress and distress. Eustress is good stress and
arises in any situation or circumstance that a person finds motivating or inspiring. Neustress
describes sensory stimuli that have no consequential effect; it is considered neither good nor bad.
Acute stress and chronic stress are two types of distress; acute stress is stress that surfaces intensely
and disappears quickly while chronic stress may not appear quite so intense, yet seems to linger for
prolonged periods of time (e.g., hours, days, weeks, or months). (Seaward, 2009).
Key Learning Point: The Stress Response: In 1914 Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon first coined
the term fight-or-flight response to describe the dynamics involved in the body’s physiological
arousal to survive a threat. Observations suggested that the fight response was triggered by anger
or aggression and was usually employed to defend territorial boundaries or attack aggressors
equal to or smaller in size. Conversely the flight response, he thought was induced by fear, it was
designed to fuel the body to endure prolonged movement such as running away from lions and
bears. (Seaward, 2009).

The Wellness Paradigm Revisited.
Ageless wisdom tells us that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and that all parts
must be looked at equally as part of the whole. In terms of health and wellness, the whole is
made up of four components: mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Additionally, ageless wisdom
suggests that holistic wellness is composed of the integration, balance, and harmony of these
four components—that each aspect of our being is so connected to the other three that no
separations exist. Looking at one component— say, our physical health—merits paying attention

to the other three because of the dynamic interconnectedness of the mind, body, spirit, and
emotions. What might seem like common sense has not always been so well accepted in
American culture. For over three hundred years, the Western mind has focused on the physical
aspects of health, leaving the other three components in the shadows. Beginning in the early
1960s, the mental, emotional, and spiritual components of health were looked at with somewhat
distant interest; only in the past decade has the interconnection of mind, body, and spirit gained
respect (and popularity) in Western science. It has been said recently that every issue is a health
issue, meaning that issues such as economic downswings, political instability, rainforest
depletion, and moral bankruptcy all ultimately affect our health. To recognize our own health
status, we must remind ourselves that we are more than just our physical bodies. We must
come to appreciate the true integration, balance, and harmony of mind, body, spirit, and
emotions.
Here are some questions to ponder as you explore your own health philosophy, values, and
beliefs. If you need additional space to write, use the extra pages provided at the back of the
book.
1. Given the dynamics of the wellness paradigm, how does it compare with the common notion
that health is the absence of disease?
2. What is your definition of wellness? Do you believe that the whole is greater than the sum of
the parts? Can you think of an example in music, politics, or the arts that demonstrates this
ageless wisdom?
3. What do you think it means to be an integrated person, to enjoy balance and harmony
among your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects? Do you feel this within
yourself? If not, why not? Can you identify which aspect(s) you feel are not in balance?
This exercise helped look at not only the connections that our health is associated with stress,
but also the mind, body, spirit and emotions. Also, this exercise helps to look at the whole
picture including the spiritual side.

Personal Stress Inventory: Top Ten Stressors
It’s time to take a personal inventory of your current stressors—those issues, concerns,
situations, or challenges that trigger the fight-or-flight response in your body.
The first step to resolving any problem is learning to identify exactly what the problem
is. Take a moment to list the top ten issues that you are facing at the present moment.
Then place check marks in the columns to signify whether this stressor directly
affects one or more aspects of your health (mind, body, spirit, emotions). Take note of
how many of your stressors affect more than one aspect. Then, next to each stressor,
chronicle how long it has been a problem. Finally, check whether this stressor is one
that elicits some level of anger, fear, or both.

This journal will not only help you identify stressors you have, but help you to realize some that you didn’t
know existed in your life. Most of the time people only think money and work are the top stressors.

Unit 2: The Physiology of Stress
Information to Remember:
Key Learning Point: Technostress: Technostress is defined as the result of a fast-pasced life
dependent on various means of technology, including computers, cell phones and smartphones,
personal digital assistants, texting, and email- all of which were supposed to give people more
leisure time. With today’s technology, we are ruled by some type of electronic device whether it
is our phone, computer or TV. The growing dependence on technology has even inspired a term
“screen addiction.” People are plugged in 24/7; technology is brought to class, work and
vacations.
Key Learning Point: Occupational Stress: While providing professional fulfillment, a creative outlet,
and a path to wealth, work is also cited as a source of significant stress by a great many
employees. Occupational stress is job related stress, which often comes from “occupational
duties for which people perceive themselves as having a great deal of responsibility, yet little or
no authority or decision making latitude” (Rosch, 1991). Many people get burned out at their job
due to daily work stressors or lack of job security, too much responsibility, unrealistic
expectations, deadlines and quotas are just a few.
Key Learning Point: The Endocrine system: The endocrine system consists of a series of glands
located throughout the body that regulate metabolic functions requiring endurance rather than
speed. The endocrine system is a network of four components: glands, hormones, circulation and
target organs. The glands that are closely involved with the stress response are the pituitary,
thyroid, and adrenal glands.

Unit 3: Psychology of Stress
Information to Remember:
Carl Jung and the Iceberg: The conscious and unconscious minds have different languages, and
while the conscious mind turns off during sleeping hours, the unconscious mind is perpetually
active. Personal unconscious is a repository of personal thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and
memories. Collective unconscious is a term coined by Jung; the deepest level of consciousness,
which connects all people together as one; divine consciousness. (Seaward, pg291).
Hierarchy of needs: Abraham Maslow theory suggests that human beings operate on a hierarchy of
needs that influence behavior. When the needs at one level are met, then needs at higher levels
can be addressed in a linear, stair-step approach. In this hierarchy, the more advanced needs will
not appear until lower needs have been acknowledged and addressed. In addition, when lower
needs, such as hunger, reappear, all higher needs momentarily vanish. (Seaward, 2009).
Chakra: Chakra is a Sanskrit word for spinning wheel. Chakras are part of the subtle anatomy. The
seven major chakras align from the crown of the head to the base of the spine and connect to
various endocrine glands. Each major chakra is directly associated with various aspects of the
mind-body-spirt dynamic. When a specific chakra is closed distorted, or congested, the
perception of stress, disease, or illness may ensue. (Seaward, 2009)

Emotional Well-Being
Emotional well-being is best described as “the ability to feel and express the entire range
of human emotions, and to control them, not be controlled by them.” Sounds like a pretty tall
order, huh? Well, it doesn’t have to be. What is the range of human emotions? Everything from
anger to love, and all that’s in between. No emotion is excluded, meaning that it is perfectly all
right to feel angry, jealous, giddy, sad, depressed, light-hearted, and silly. All of these feelings
comprise the total human experience, the complete spectrum of human emotions.
A well-accepted theory suggests that early in our development, we spend the greatest
amount of time trying on and exploring emotions. But if you are like most people, you were told
at an early age one or more of the following expressions related to your behavior: “Wipe that

smile off your face,” “Big boys don’t cry,” “Don’t you ever talk back to me,” or “I’ll give you
something to cry about.” Perhaps our parents had good intentions, or perhaps they were just at
wit’s end. Regardless of what
prompts such comments, most youngsters interpret the message altogether differently than
intended. Instead of relating such phrases only to the moment, most children take the meaning
of such messages globally and think it is never all right to laugh or to cry. If we hear these
messages enough, we begin to deny some of our feelings by stuffing them down into our
unconscious minds—only to meet them head-on later in life.
The second half of the emotional well-being equation says that to be emotionally well, we
must control our feelings, not let them control us. Our feelings control us when we refuse to feel
and express them or when we linger too long in the moods of anger, anxiety, depression, grief,
or boredom. The result is stagnation, not dynamic living.
Here are some questions to ponder about your own sense of emotional wellbeing:
1. What is your least favorite emotion, one that you don’t like to feel or perhaps would rather
avoid feeling? Can you explain why?
2. Combing through your memory, can you remember a time (or times) when you were told or
reminded not to act or feel a certain way (e.g., big boys don’t cry), or were perhaps even
humiliated? Take a moment to describe this incident.
3. What is your favorite emotion? Why? How often would you say you feel this emotion
throughout the course of a typical day?
4. If you feel you may be the kind of person who doesn’t acknowledge or express your
emotions, can you think of ways to change your behavior and begin to gain a sense of
emotional balance?

Unit 4: Personality Traits and the Human
Spirituality
Information to Remember:
Type A Personality: Type A personality, is a rushed or hurried lifestyle. Many Type A people were
found to be preoccupied, if not obsessed, with the passage of time and appeared very impatient.
Many of these individuals don’t like to wait in lines, honk at the car in front of them if the light
turns green, and show incredible impatience with others who are too slow with tasks that threaten
their own work schedule or personal responsibilities. (Seaward, 2009).
Type D Personality: Type D personality is linked to depression and others call “psychocardiology”
or “behavior cardiology”: the relationship between emotional stress (specifically, anxiety and
depression) and cardiac function. These two personalities do share common ground and that is
stress. The idea that that personality traits associated with anxiety and depression affect the
course of heart disease is now supported by clinical data. (Seaward, 2009).
Codependent Personality Traits: Codependency is a stress-prone personality with many traits and
behaviors that seem to increase the likelihood of perceived stress and the inability to cope
effectively with it; addictive in nature; based on the need to make other dependent to receive self-
validation. Codependcy was first introduced by psychologists in the 1980s to describe
individuals who, in simple terms, are dependent on making other people dependent on them as a
means of self-validation. (Seaward, 2009).

Distractions of the Human Path
Distractions can best be described as those things that pull us off the spiritual path
indefinitely.
Distractions begin as attractions, but their allure can often cast a spell of
slumber on the soul-growth process. Although a respite on the human journey is
desirable,

and even necessary at times, a prolonged distraction will ultimately weaken
our spiritual resolve. The human spirit, like energy, must flow, never stagnate.
The lessons of distractions are quite common in fairy tales. Whether it is the
story of Pinocchio or Hansel and Gretel, the warnings regarding distractions are as
plentiful as the distractions themselves. The lessons of distractions are common in the
great spiritual teachings as well. Here they are called temptations. Not always, but often,
attractions that become distractions have an addictive quality to them.
What happens when we become distracted? Metaphorically speaking, we fall
asleep on the human path. Like Dorothy and her friends on the way to Oz who stepped
off the yellow brick road to smell the poppies and fell fast asleep, we too lose our
direction,
our mission, and our energy stagnates. The end result is never promising.
Unlike roadblocks, distractions are not meant to be circumvented, dismantled,
or even transcended. Rather, they are meant to be appreciated—perhaps from afar,
perhaps enjoyed briefly and then left behind. Fairy tales aside, what are contemporary
distractions? Common examples of everyday distractions might include social contacts,
alcohol, television, cell phones, and the Internet.
Take a moment to reflect on what might be some distractions in your life. Make
a list and describe each one in a sentence or two. Upon recognition of these, what
steps can you take to wake up and get back on the path?

Unit 5: Dealing with Stress: Coping Strategies
Information to Remember:
Divinity Theory: Divinity Theory suggests that humor is a gift from God. It’s said that humor has an
adhesive quality that connects and bonds people together, if only for the duration of a joke, and
connectedness is a component of spiritual well-being. Humor can definitely be that thing that
makes a group of people who don’t know one another connect and later on become friends.
(Seaward, 2009).
Time Management: Time management is the prioritization, scheduling, and execution of daily
responsibilities to a level of personal satisfaction. Effective time management does not mean you
have more time; it means you make better use of the time you have. Having good time
management skill is so important, not only for you work environment but also your home life.
Being able to balance tasks at work as well as at home will benefit you and your family.
(Seaward, 2009).
Time Management Techniques: There are a few ways you can prioritize your tasks. One is the ABC
rank order method; this involves assigning letters to various tasks, A being the highest while C is
the lowest priority. Another is the Pareto principle; this states that 20 percent of the tasks we do
give 80 percent of the rewards or satisfaction. Another is the Important versus Urgent Matrix.
With this technique you would prioritize by high or low urgency. (Seaward, 2009).

Healthy Pleasures
In their book Healthy Pleasures, Robert Ornstein and David Sobel discuss
the idea that in order to create a sense of balance in our lives, we need to
remind ourselves to pat ourselves on the back, take responsibility for our
moments of happiness, and engage in a host of behaviors that bring us a
sense of joy and satisfaction. Listing healthy pleasures also helps steer you
in the direction of positive psychology.
Now you may say, “Hey, I already do this!” But most people don’t,

especially after they get out of college and get caught up in making money,
paying bills, raising kids, and taking care of parents.
Healthy pleasures are just that: healthy. They don’t cost much, either. To
look at a sunset, to take an early morning walk in the woods, to treat
yourself to an ice cream cone—these are healthy pleasures. How quickly
they are forgotten when we feel stressed!
This exercise asks you to list 25 healthy pleasures that you participate in on
a regular basis. If you cannot come up with 25, list things you consider
healthy pleasures that you intend to do soon.

Information to Remember:
The Relaxation Response: There are four basic steps to follow to promote physiological homeostasis.
The first is a quiet environment, it doesn’t have to be totally silent but it does need to have
minimal distractions. The second is a mental device; this is a focal point to direct all attention.
The third is passive attitude; this is a frame of mind in which you are open to thoughts rather than
blocking them out. The last is a comfortable position; anything you find comfortable, where the
body is relaxed, with no sign of muscular tension. (Seaward, 2009).
Mental Imagery as a Relaxation Technique: Researchers have come to understand that the conscious
mind needs to break away periodically and “download” sensory information for “reprocessing.”
I make it a point to leave my desk while I’m at work so that I’m not staring at my computer all
day, I try to make it outside. I try to only daydream when I’m outside not while I’m working, but
sometimes it will happen, but when it does I normally find that I’m less stressed and
overwhelmed with work. When imagination is used to promote relaxation, the body’s five senses
are in effect deactivated or desensitized to stressful stimuli. The body is allowed to recharge so
that upon return to your physical environment, you can deal with perceptions of stress more
effectively. (Seaward, 2009).
Behavioral Changes: Behavioral changes is one of three categories used in mental imagery (e.g.,
quitting smoking, improved athletic performance, weight loss programming). What
mental imagery does is reinforce a new desired behavior. Repeated use of images
reinforces the desired behavior more strongly over time. (Seaward, 2009).

I Have a Vision: The Art of Visualization
A popular song back in the 1960s had a line that went like this: “Thinking is the best
way to travel.” In many ways this is true. The mind has an incredible ability to project
itself to many places—some places the body might have been to, some only the mind

visits in dreams. Traveling on the thoughts generated by the mind, we can go anywhere.
No ticket or baggage is required, only a desire and your imagination.
If you had the ability to project yourself anywhere to relax for an hour or so,
where would you go? This journal theme invites you to plan five mental mini-vacations
and then use the powers of your imagination to take you there.
Visualization can also be used to heal the body by using your imagination to
create a vision of restored health of a specific organ or region of your body. In fact, visualization
is one of the leading techniques in mind-body medicine.
The purpose of this exercise, then, is to sharpen your imagination and relaxation
skills so that when you recognize your need to unwind you can escape, if only
momentarily, to a place that gives you peace of mind. When drafting these images,
give as much detail as possible so you can not only see them in your mind’s eye, but
actually feel yourself there through all five senses.

Too Much Information

If no one has officially said this to you yet, then you are overdue to hear
these words: “Welcome to the information age!” Satellite television, cable
television, the Internet, cell phones, and embedded computer chips are just a
few things that inundate us with a tsunami of information. As if this weren’t
enough, there are more things looming on the horizon, all of which are
begging for our attention. If you are like most people today, most likely you
are drowning in information. There is even a new name for this: information
stress.
Although we take in information through all of our five senses, over 80
percent of all the information we take in is received through the senses of
sight and sound. Well before the term “information age” was coined, it was
very easy to experience sensory overload from too much information taken
from the eyes and ears, such as from watching too much television to
pulling an all-nighter to cram for an exam. The consequence of sensory
overload is becoming numb to it all and walking around like a zombie. It’s
no stretch to say there are people who fit this description.
Living in the information age, discernment is essential. Discernment means
being able to distinguish truth from non-truth. Perhaps more accurately, it
means discerning news from marketing, news from entertainment, and truth
from hype and spin.
There is a solution to information overload. It is a practice called meditation:
cleaning the mind of all the clutter and useless information that bombards
your attention span.

they do this. In terms of too much information, or TMI, people who
take in too much information often talk to their friends and share too
much information (e.g., how much they make, how many times they
have sex per week, or how often they clean their bathroom). There is a
real art to sharing information without revealing everything. As a rule,
people who share too much information about themselves have
acceptance problems. Are you the kind of person who volunteers too

Unit 7: Nutrition and Stress
Information to Remember:
Nutrition’s role in Stress: Nutrition plays a crucial role in both minimizing and increasing
the physiological arousal of the stress response. The stress response increases the
rate of metabolism by activating the mobilization of carbohydrates and fats into the
bloodstream for energy production. Stress increases the production of cortisol,
which, in turn, increases the production of the chemical neuropeptide Y (NPY) in
the brain. NPY is thought to be responsible for people cravings for carbohydrate-
rich foods, particularly sweets (possibly a reason for weight gain). (Seaward, 2009).
Spirtual Nutrition: Spiritual Nutrition suggests that the colors of specific fruits and vegetables
augments the flow of subtle energy to the respective chakras represented by these colors
(e.g., foods with the color red are beneficial for the root chakra and organs associated
with this area). In the Eastern culture it is believed that there are several energy
centers (called chakras), which run from the top of the head to the base of the
spine. Each of the seven energy centers is associated with a color: red (base of
spine), orange (navel), yellow (spleen), green (heart), aqua-blue (throat), indigo
blue (forehead), and violet (crown). (Seaward, 2009).
Eating Disorders: Three of the most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and
overeating. Anorexics are classified into two groups: the individual who restricts food
intake and starves herself and the bulimic who runs through cycles of gorging and
then purging. In an effort to control body weight, bulimics binge on an assortment of
foods (typically junk food) and then purge (either by vomiting or using laxatives) in
an attempt to satisfy the need to eat and also satisfy the need to control their weight.
Excessive overeating may be a result of many factors, including guilt, loneliness, or
nervousness. (Seaward, 2009).

Physical Exercise
In simplest terms, we are physical animals with a human spirit. As human
beings we were never meant to sit behind a desk for eight to ten hours a day.
Human anatomy and physiology were designed to find a balance between
motion and stillness, stress and homeostasis, exercise and relaxation. Some
would say that the mounting incidence of disease and illness is a result of
being out of physiological balance.
In this day and age, in which stress is at an all-time high, our bodies kick out
several stress hormones, which, if not used for their intended purpose (to
mobilize the body's systems for fight or flight), circulate throughout the
body and tend to wreak havoc on various organs and constituents of the
immune system. Physical exercise is considered the best way to keep the
physiological systems of the body in balance, from stress hormones and
adipose tissue to the integrity of bone cells and macrophages of the immune
system.
Exercise doesn't have to be all that hard or time consuming. Perhaps more
important than what you do is just making the time to do it. Mark Twain
once said, “Oh, I get the urge to exercise every now and then, but I just lie
down till it goes away.” This may be humorous, but the truth of the matter is
that physical exercise is what we need to promote the balance and integrity
of our physiological systems. Although there is no doubt we seem to have a
certain magnetic attraction to the couch and TV, this pattern of behavior has
proved to be hazardous to our health.

success (intensity, frequency, and duration of exercise).

injured and couldn't do your favorite activity, what would be your

Types of Physical Exercise: There are six components of fitness: cardiovascular
endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, agility, power, and
balance. Individuals need to understand that you need to be somewhat active in all
of these components to be healthy. (Seaward, 2009).
Anaerobic Exercise: Anaerobic exercise stimulates muscular strength (hypertrophy of
muscle fibers), aerobic exercise challenges the cardiovascular and pulmonary
systems to increase endurance (and to some extent muscular endurance, depending
on the nature of the activity). Anaerobic exercise will reduce blood pressure,
reduce cholesterol, decrease in body fat and decrease from stress. (Seaward,
2009).

THE RAINBOW DIET
Food color is more important than just having a nice presentation on your
dinner plate. Each color holds a specific vibration in the spectrum of light.
When this is combined with the nutrient value of food, it can help to
enhance the health of the physical body. In the science of subtle energies,
each of the body's primary chakras is associated with a specific color (see
accompanying chart). It is thought that eating fruits and vegetables
associated with the color of various chakras provides healthy energy to that
specific region. For example, women with urinary tract infections (root
chakra) are encouraged to drink cranberry juice (red). Diabetic people with
macular problems are encouraged to eat blueberries and take the herb
bilberry (blue). Moreover, recent research suggests that the active

ingredients in fruits and vegetables that give them their color, called
bioflavonoids, help prevent cancer. Regardless of Eastern philosophies or
Western science, the bottom line is to eat a good variety of fruits and
vegetables.

Discovering your real self means the difference between freedom and the compulsions of
conformity.

One often hears in California that “Nobody is ever satisfied with their hair.” The same could be
said about our bodies. We receive hundreds of messages a day from the media telling us that
our physiques just aren’t good enough. We spend hours and hours and gobs of money altering,
complementing, adding, shifting, subtracting, and glamorizing various aspects of our bodies just
to please other people in the hopes that we too can be pleased. Hair color, eye color, body
weight (too much, too little), aerobic this, anaerobic that, add inches here, take off pounds
there—it is fair to say that few people are completely satisfied with their bodies. But it doesn’t
have to be this way.
There is a strong connection between self-esteem and body image. The two go hand in hand. If
your level of self-esteem is low, so too will be your body image. In his book Psycho-Cybernetics,
Dr. Maxwell Maltz noted that many of his clients didn’t seem all that much happier after
receiving nose jobs and facelifts, which led him to the realization that the real change has to
take place inside first.
So how do you feel about your body, your physique?
1. Describe your body. First list all the things you like about your body and explain why. Next, if
so inclined, make a list of things you wish to improve.

2. Do you compare yourself with others? If you do, you’re not alone. Actually, this is pretty
common for both men and women, especially in college when your identity is still being
formulated: Grooming yourself for that very important first impression can take priority over
a term paper every time. So what is it you find yourself comparing with other people? Why?
3. The American public is obsessed with weight and weight gain. There is some good reason for
this because of the relationship between obesity and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and
heart disease, but the concern has become an obsession for most people. Is your weight a
concern for you? If so, how?
4. Taking to heart Maxwell Maltz’s notion of making the first change within, can you think of any
perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs you can begin to alter so that changes you do make to

  • 5. 4 Unit 1: The Nature of Stress Information to Remember: Key Learning Point: Definitions of Stress: In eastern philosophies, stress is considered to be an absence of inner peace, while Western culture describes stress as a loss of emotional control. Physiologically speaking, stress is defined as the rate of wear and tear on the body. Seyle observed that whether a situation was perceived as good (e.g., a job promotion) or bad (e.g., the loss of a job), the physiological response or arousal was very similar. (Seaward, 2009). Key Learning Point: Types of Stress: Eustress, neustress and distress. Eustress is good stress and arises in any situation or circumstance that a person finds motivating or inspiring. Neustress describes sensory stimuli that have no consequential effect; it is considered neither good nor bad. Acute stress and chronic stress are two types of distress; acute stress is stress that surfaces intensely and disappears quickly while chronic stress may not appear quite so intense, yet seems to linger for prolonged periods of time (e.g., hours, days, weeks, or months). (Seaward, 2009). Key Learning Point: The Stress Response: In 1914 Harvard physiologist Walter Cannon first coined the term fight-or-flight response to describe the dynamics involved in the body’s physiological arousal to survive a threat. Observations suggested that the fight response was triggered by anger or aggression and was usually employed to defend territorial boundaries or attack aggressors equal to or smaller in size. Conversely the flight response, he thought was induced by fear, it was designed to fuel the body to endure prolonged movement such as running away from lions and bears. (Seaward, 2009). Resources: Exercises: The Wellness Paradigm Revisited. Ageless wisdom tells us that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and that all parts must be looked at equally as part of the whole. In terms of health and wellness, the whole is made up of four components: mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Additionally, ageless wisdom suggests that holistic wellness is composed of the integration, balance, and harmony of these four components—that each aspect of our being is so connected to the other three that no separations exist. Looking at one component— say, our physical health—merits paying attention Unit 1
  • 6. 5 to the other three because of the dynamic interconnectedness of the mind, body, spirit, and emotions. What might seem like common sense has not always been so well accepted in American culture. For over three hundred years, the Western mind has focused on the physical aspects of health, leaving the other three components in the shadows. Beginning in the early 1960s, the mental, emotional, and spiritual components of health were looked at with somewhat distant interest; only in the past decade has the interconnection of mind, body, and spirit gained respect (and popularity) in Western science. It has been said recently that every issue is a health issue, meaning that issues such as economic downswings, political instability, rainforest depletion, and moral bankruptcy all ultimately affect our health. To recognize our own health status, we must remind ourselves that we are more than just our physical bodies. We must come to appreciate the true integration, balance, and harmony of mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Here are some questions to ponder as you explore your own health philosophy, values, and beliefs. If you need additional space to write, use the extra pages provided at the back of the book. 1. Given the dynamics of the wellness paradigm, how does it compare with the common notion that health is the absence of disease? 2. What is your definition of wellness? Do you believe that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts? Can you think of an example in music, politics, or the arts that demonstrates this ageless wisdom? 3. What do you think it means to be an integrated person, to enjoy balance and harmony among your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects? Do you feel this within yourself? If not, why not? Can you identify which aspect(s) you feel are not in balance? This exercise helped look at not only the connections that our health is associated with stress, but also the mind, body, spirit and emotions. Also, this exercise helps to look at the whole picture including the spiritual side. Tools: Journal Writing: Personal Stress Inventory: Top Ten Stressors It’s time to take a personal inventory of your current stressors—those issues, concerns, situations, or challenges that trigger the fight-or-flight response in your body. The first step to resolving any problem is learning to identify exactly what the problem is. Take a moment to list the top ten issues that you are facing at the present moment. Then place check marks in the columns to signify whether this stressor directly affects one or more aspects of your health (mind, body, spirit, emotions). Take note of how many of your stressors affect more than one aspect. Then, next to each stressor, chronicle how long it has been a problem. Finally, check whether this stressor is one that elicits some level of anger, fear, or both.   • 8. 7 Unit 2: The Physiology of Stress Information to Remember: Key Learning Point: Technostress: Technostress is defined as the result of a fast-pasced life dependent on various means of technology, including computers, cell phones and smartphones, personal digital assistants, texting, and email- all of which were supposed to give people more leisure time. With today’s technology, we are ruled by some type of electronic device whether it is our phone, computer or TV. The growing dependence on technology has even inspired a term “screen addiction.” People are plugged in 24/7; technology is brought to class, work and vacations. Key Learning Point: Occupational Stress: While providing professional fulfillment, a creative outlet, and a path to wealth, work is also cited as a source of significant stress by a great many employees. Occupational stress is job related stress, which often comes from “occupational duties for which people perceive themselves as having a great deal of responsibility, yet little or no authority or decision making latitude” (Rosch, 1991). Many people get burned out at their job due to daily work stressors or lack of job security, too much responsibility, unrealistic expectations, deadlines and quotas are just a few. Key Learning Point: The Endocrine system: The endocrine system consists of a series of glands located throughout the body that regulate metabolic functions requiring endurance rather than speed. The endocrine system is a network of four components: glands, hormones, circulation and target organs. The glands that are closely involved with the stress response are the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands.   • 12. 11 Unit 3: Psychology of Stress Information to Remember: Carl Jung and the Iceberg: The conscious and unconscious minds have different languages, and while the conscious mind turns off during sleeping hours, the unconscious mind is perpetually active. Personal unconscious is a repository of personal thoughts, perceptions, feelings, and memories. Collective unconscious is a term coined by Jung; the deepest level of consciousness, which connects all people together as one; divine consciousness. (Seaward, pg291). Hierarchy of needs: Abraham Maslow theory suggests that human beings operate on a hierarchy of needs that influence behavior. When the needs at one level are met, then needs at higher levels can be addressed in a linear, stair-step approach. In this hierarchy, the more advanced needs will not appear until lower needs have been acknowledged and addressed. In addition, when lower needs, such as hunger, reappear, all higher needs momentarily vanish. (Seaward, 2009). Chakra: Chakra is a Sanskrit word for spinning wheel. Chakras are part of the subtle anatomy. The seven major chakras align from the crown of the head to the base of the spine and connect to various endocrine glands. Each major chakra is directly associated with various aspects of the mind-body-spirt dynamic. When a specific chakra is closed distorted, or congested, the perception of stress, disease, or illness may ensue. (Seaward, 2009) Resources: Exercises: Emotional Well-Being Emotional well-being is best described as “the ability to feel and express the entire range of human emotions, and to control them, not be controlled by them.” Sounds like a pretty tall order, huh? Well, it doesn’t have to be. What is the range of human emotions? Everything from anger to love, and all that’s in between. No emotion is excluded, meaning that it is perfectly all right to feel angry, jealous, giddy, sad, depressed, light-hearted, and silly. All of these feelings comprise the total human experience, the complete spectrum of human emotions. A well-accepted theory suggests that early in our development, we spend the greatest amount of time trying on and exploring emotions. But if you are like most people, you were told at an early age one or more of the following expressions related to your behavior: “Wipe that Unit 3
  • 13. 12 smile off your face,” “Big boys don’t cry,” “Don’t you ever talk back to me,” or “I’ll give you something to cry about.” Perhaps our parents had good intentions, or perhaps they were just at wit’s end. Regardless of what prompts such comments, most youngsters interpret the message altogether differently than intended. Instead of relating such phrases only to the moment, most children take the meaning of such messages globally and think it is never all right to laugh or to cry. If we hear these messages enough, we begin to deny some of our feelings by stuffing them down into our unconscious minds—only to meet them head-on later in life. The second half of the emotional well-being equation says that to be emotionally well, we must control our feelings, not let them control us. Our feelings control us when we refuse to feel and express them or when we linger too long in the moods of anger, anxiety, depression, grief, or boredom. The result is stagnation, not dynamic living. Here are some questions to ponder about your own sense of emotional wellbeing: 1. What is your least favorite emotion, one that you don’t like to feel or perhaps would rather avoid feeling? Can you explain why? 2. Combing through your memory, can you remember a time (or times) when you were told or reminded not to act or feel a certain way (e.g., big boys don’t cry), or were perhaps even humiliated? Take a moment to describe this incident. 3. What is your favorite emotion? Why? How often would you say you feel this emotion throughout the course of a typical day? 4.   • 16. 15 Unit 4: Personality Traits and the Human Spirituality Information to Remember: Type A Personality: Type A personality, is a rushed or hurried lifestyle. Many Type A people were found to be preoccupied, if not obsessed, with the passage of time and appeared very impatient. Many of these individuals don’t like to wait in lines, honk at the car in front of them if the light turns green, and show incredible impatience with others who are too slow with tasks that threaten their own work schedule or personal responsibilities. (Seaward, 2009). Type D Personality: Type D personality is linked to depression and others call “psychocardiology” or “behavior cardiology”: the relationship between emotional stress (specifically, anxiety and depression) and cardiac function. These two personalities do share common ground and that is stress. The idea that that personality traits associated with anxiety and depression affect the course of heart disease is now supported by clinical data. (Seaward, 2009). Codependent Personality Traits: Codependency is a stress-prone personality with many traits and behaviors that seem to increase the likelihood of perceived stress and the inability to cope effectively with it; addictive in nature; based on the need to make other dependent to receive self- validation. Codependcy was first introduced by psychologists in the 1980s to describe individuals who, in simple terms, are dependent on making other people dependent on them as a means of self-validation. (Seaward, 2009). Resources: Exercises: Distractions of the Human Path Distractions can best be described as those things that pull us off the spiritual path indefinitely. Distractions begin as attractions, but their allure can often cast a spell of slumber on the soul-growth process. Although a respite on the human journey is desirable, Unit 4
  • 17. 16 and even necessary at times, a prolonged distraction will ultimately weaken our spiritual resolve. The human spirit, like energy, must flow, never stagnate. The lessons of distractions are quite common in fairy tales. Whether it is the story of Pinocchio or Hansel and Gretel, the warnings regarding distractions are as plentiful as the distractions themselves. The lessons of distractions are common in the great spiritual teachings as well. Here they are called temptations. Not always, but often, attractions that become distractions have an addictive quality to them. What happens when we become distracted? Metaphorically speaking, we fall asleep on the human path. Like Dorothy and her friends on the way to Oz who stepped off the yellow brick road to smell the poppies and fell fast asleep, we too lose our direction, our mission, and our energy stagnates. The end result is never promising. Unlike roadblocks, distractions are not meant to be circumvented, dismantled, or even transcended. Rather, they are meant to be appreciated—perhaps from afar, perhaps enjoyed briefly and then left behind. Fairy tales aside, what are contemporary distractions? Common examples of everyday distractions might include social contacts, alcohol, television, cell phones, and the Internet. Take a moment to reflect on what might be some distractions in your life. Make a list and describe each one in a sentence or two.   • 19. 18 Unit 5: Dealing with Stress: Coping Strategies Information to Remember: Divinity Theory: Divinity Theory suggests that humor is a gift from God. It’s said that humor has an adhesive quality that connects and bonds people together, if only for the duration of a joke, and connectedness is a component of spiritual well-being. Humor can definitely be that thing that makes a group of people who don’t know one another connect and later on become friends. (Seaward, 2009). Time Management: Time management is the prioritization, scheduling, and execution of daily responsibilities to a level of personal satisfaction. Effective time management does not mean you have more time; it means you make better use of the time you have. Having good time management skill is so important, not only for you work environment but also your home life. Being able to balance tasks at work as well as at home will benefit you and your family. (Seaward, 2009). Time Management Techniques: There are a few ways you can prioritize your tasks. One is the ABC rank order method; this involves assigning letters to various tasks, A being the highest while C is the lowest priority. Another is the Pareto principle; this states that 20 percent of the tasks we do give 80 percent of the rewards or satisfaction. Another is the Important versus Urgent Matrix. With this technique you would prioritize by high or low urgency. (Seaward, 2009). Resources: Exercises: Healthy Pleasures In their book Healthy Pleasures, Robert Ornstein and David Sobel discuss the idea that in order to create a sense of balance in our lives, we need to remind ourselves to pat ourselves on the back, take responsibility for our moments of happiness, and engage in a host of behaviors that bring us a sense of joy and satisfaction. Listing healthy pleasures also helps steer you in the direction of positive psychology. Now you may say, “Hey, I already do this!” But most people don’t, Unit 5
  • 20. 19 especially after they get out of college and get caught up in making money, paying bills, raising kids, and taking care of parents. Healthy pleasures are just that: healthy. They don’t cost much, either. To look at a sunset, to take an early morning walk in the woods, to treat yourself to an ice cream cone—these are healthy pleasures. How quickly they are forgotten when we feel stressed! This exercise asks you to list 25 healthy pleasures that you participate in on a regular basis.   • 24. 23 Unit 6: Relaxation Techniques 1: Breathing, Meditation, and Mental Imagery Information to Remember: The Relaxation Response: There are four basic steps to follow to promote physiological homeostasis. The first is a quiet environment, it doesn’t have to be totally silent but it does need to have minimal distractions. The second is a mental device; this is a focal point to direct all attention. The third is passive attitude; this is a frame of mind in which you are open to thoughts rather than blocking them out. The last is a comfortable position; anything you find comfortable, where the body is relaxed, with no sign of muscular tension. (Seaward, 2009). Mental Imagery as a Relaxation Technique: Researchers have come to understand that the conscious mind needs to break away periodically and “download” sensory information for “reprocessing.” I make it a point to leave my desk while I’m at work so that I’m not staring at my computer all day, I try to make it outside. I try to only daydream when I’m outside not while I’m working, but sometimes it will happen, but when it does I normally find that I’m less stressed and overwhelmed with work. When imagination is used to promote relaxation, the body’s five senses are in effect deactivated or desensitized to stressful stimuli. The body is allowed to recharge so that upon return to your physical environment, you can deal with perceptions of stress more effectively. (Seaward, 2009). Behavioral Changes: Behavioral changes is one of three categories used in mental imagery (e.g., quitting smoking, improved athletic performance, weight loss programming).   • 25. 24 visits in dreams. Traveling on the thoughts generated by the mind, we can go anywhere. No ticket or baggage is required, only a desire and your imagination. If you had the ability to project yourself anywhere to relax for an hour or so, where would you go? This journal theme invites you to plan five mental mini-vacations and then use the powers of your imagination to take you there. Visualization can also be used to heal the body by using your imagination to create a vision of restored health of a specific organ or region of your body. In fact, visualization is one of the leading techniques in mind-body medicine. The purpose of this exercise, then, is to sharpen your imagination and relaxation skills so that when you recognize your need to unwind you can escape, if only momentarily, to a place that gives you peace of mind. When drafting these images, give as much detail as possible so you can not only see them in your mind’s eye, but actually feel yourself there through all five senses.   • 26. 25 If no one has officially said this to you yet, then you are overdue to hear these words: “Welcome to the information age!” Satellite television, cable television, the Internet, cell phones, and embedded computer chips are just a few things that inundate us with a tsunami of information. As if this weren’t enough, there are more things looming on the horizon, all of which are begging for our attention. If you are like most people today, most likely you are drowning in information. There is even a new name for this: information stress. Although we take in information through all of our five senses, over 80 percent of all the information we take in is received through the senses of sight and sound. Well before the term “information age” was coined, it was very easy to experience sensory overload from too much information taken from the eyes and ears, such as from watching too much television to pulling an all-nighter to cram for an exam. The consequence of sensory overload is becoming numb to it all and walking around like a zombie. It’s no stretch to say there are people who fit this description. Living in the information age, discernment is essential. Discernment means being able to distinguish truth from non-truth. Perhaps more accurately, it means discerning news from marketing, news from entertainment, and truth from hype and spin. There is a solution to information overload. It is a practice called meditation: cleaning the mind of all the clutter and useless information that bombards your attention span. 1.   • 29. 28 Unit 7: Nutrition and Stress Information to Remember: Nutrition’s role in Stress: Nutrition plays a crucial role in both minimizing and increasing the physiological arousal of the stress response. The stress response increases the rate of metabolism by activating the mobilization of carbohydrates and fats into the bloodstream for energy production. Stress increases the production of cortisol, which, in turn, increases the production of the chemical neuropeptide Y (NPY) in the brain. NPY is thought to be responsible for people cravings for carbohydrate- rich foods, particularly sweets (possibly a reason for weight gain). (Seaward, 2009). Spirtual Nutrition: Spiritual Nutrition suggests that the colors of specific fruits and vegetables augments the flow of subtle energy to the respective chakras represented by these colors (e.g., foods with the color red are beneficial for the root chakra and organs associated with this area). In the Eastern culture it is believed that there are several energy centers (called chakras), which run from the top of the head to the base of the spine. Each of the seven energy centers is associated with a color: red (base of spine), orange (navel), yellow (spleen), green (heart), aqua-blue (throat), indigo blue (forehead), and violet (crown). (Seaward, 2009). Eating Disorders: Three of the most common eating disorders are anorexia, bulimia, and overeating. Anorexics are classified into two groups: the individual who restricts food intake and starves herself and the bulimic who runs through cycles of gorging and then purging. In an effort to control body weight, bulimics binge on an assortment of foods (typically junk food) and then purge (either by vomiting or using laxatives) in an attempt to satisfy the need to eat and also satisfy the need to control their weight. Excessive overeating may be a result of many factors, including guilt, loneliness, or nervousness. (Seaward, 2009). Unit 7
  • 30. 29 Resources: Exercises: Physical Exercise In simplest terms, we are physical animals with a human spirit. As human beings we were never meant to sit behind a desk for eight to ten hours a day. Human anatomy and physiology were designed to find a balance between motion and stillness, stress and homeostasis, exercise and relaxation. Some would say that the mounting incidence of disease and illness is a result of being out of physiological balance. In this day and age, in which stress is at an all-time high, our bodies kick out several stress hormones, which, if not used for their intended purpose (to mobilize the body's systems for fight or flight), circulate throughout the body and tend to wreak havoc on various organs and constituents of the immune system. Physical exercise is considered the best way to keep the physiological systems of the body in balance, from stress hormones and adipose tissue to the integrity of bone cells and macrophages of the immune system. Exercise doesn't have to be all that hard or time consuming. Perhaps more important than what you do is just making the time to do it. Mark Twain once said, “Oh, I get the urge to exercise every now and then, but I just lie down till it goes away.” This may be humorous, but the truth of the matter is that physical exercise is what we need to promote the balance and integrity of our physiological systems. Although there is no doubt we seem to have a certain magnetic attraction to the couch and TV, this pattern of behavior has proved to be hazardous to our health. 1.   • 33. 32 Unit 8: Physical Exercise and Activity Information to Remember: Types of Physical Exercise: There are six components of fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, agility, power, and balance. Individuals need to understand that you need to be somewhat active in all of these components to be healthy. (Seaward, 2009). Anaerobic Exercise: Anaerobic exercise stimulates muscular strength (hypertrophy of muscle fibers), aerobic exercise challenges the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems to increase endurance (and to some extent muscular endurance, depending on the nature of the activity). Anaerobic exercise will reduce blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, decrease in body fat and decrease from stress. (Seaward, 2009). Resources: Exercises: THE RAINBOW DIET Food color is more important than just having a nice presentation on your dinner plate. Each color holds a specific vibration in the spectrum of light. When this is combined with the nutrient value of food, it can help to enhance the health of the physical body. In the science of subtle energies, each of the body's primary chakras is associated with a specific color (see accompanying chart). It is thought that eating fruits and vegetables associated with the color of various chakras provides healthy energy to that specific region. For example, women with urinary tract infections (root chakra) are encouraged to drink cranberry juice (red). Diabetic people with macular problems are encouraged to eat blueberries and take the herb bilberry (blue). Moreover, recent research suggests that the active Unit 8
  • 34. 33 ingredients in fruits and vegetables that give them their color, called bioflavonoids, help prevent cancer. Regardless of Eastern philosophies or Western science, the bottom line is to eat a good variety of fruits and vegetables. We receive hundreds of messages a day from the media telling us that our physiques just aren’t good enough. We spend hours and hours and gobs of money altering, complementing, adding, shifting, subtracting, and glamorizing various aspects of our bodies just to please other people in the hopes that we too can be pleased. Hair color, eye color, body weight (too much, too little), aerobic this, anaerobic that, add inches here, take off pounds there—it is fair to say that few people are completely satisfied with their bodies. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There is a strong connection between self-esteem and body image. The two go hand in hand. If your level of self-esteem is low, so too will be your body image. In his book Psycho-Cybernetics, Dr. Maxwell Maltz noted that many of his clients didn’t seem all that much happier after receiving nose jobs and facelifts, which led him to the realization that the real change has to take place inside first. So how do you feel about your body, your physique? 1. Describe your body. First list all the things you like about your body and explain why. Next, if so inclined, make a list of things you wish to improve.

Actually, this is pretty common for both men and women, especially in college when your identity is still being formulated: Grooming yourself for that very important first impression can take priority over a term paper every time. There is some good reason for this because of the relationship between obesity and diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, but the concern has become an obsession for most people.
