Identify and understand the differences between the three levels of administration: Prompting medication; Assisting with administration or Administering medication.
2. Prompting medication
Care workers prompt by:
Reminding the person to take their medication
Asking whether they have remembered to take their
medication
2
3. Assisting with medication
Assistance is at the request of the service user
ie. the person is in full control of their medication but just
can’t manipulate the packets or bottles
3
4. Assisting with medication
Care workers assist by:
Opening bottles and packets
Shaking bottles
Removing lids
Popping pills out of packets
4
6. Administering medication
The care worker administers by:
Checking the medication requirements against the
medication administration record (MAR), prepares
and gives these medications to the service user
This might include:
Removing medication from bottles and packets or
from a sealed compliance aid;
Pouring out a dosage of medicine:
and giving them to the service user to take
6
7. Administering medication
This might also include:
Applying creams and lotions
Instilling eye, ear and nose drops
Giving invasive medication eg. injections, oxygen,
suppositories or giving medication via a PEG
7
8. Just to recap
Prompting medication – asking or reminding the
person
Assisting with medication – helping to manipulate
containers
Administering medication – checking first what is
needed on the MAR, then preparing and giving this
medication
