 Novel by the South
African born writer J.M.
Coetzee.
 It was intended as an
allegorical attack on
racial discrimination in
South Africa.
 Magistrate is the
centre of Novel.
 Barbarian’s imaginary
identity
 Joll as real Barbarian.
 The nameless Barbarian Girl comes to play
a central role in Magistrate’s life.
 Girl’s vision is permanently impaired, ankles
brutally disfigured and father is killed.
 Magistrate takes her under his wing and
employing her as cook and maid.
 But, The professional relationship quickly
turns into sexual.
 The Barbarian girl therefore expose a
distance between herself and Magistrate.
 A distance which might be interpreted as
representing the collision of two disparate
cultures...
- That of the Nomands and
- That of the Empire.
 Women who were born in, who live in, and
are from the continent of Africa.
 Women’s traditional role
 Role in war
 In Society- Queen mother
 Marginalize cause of their Skin and
appearance in The world.
 Barbarian Girl represents a radical difference
from the Magistrate’s perception of the
world.
 Ironically, even though she is blind, the girl
makes the Magistrate feel more exposed
and visible.
 Since, He sees himself reflected in her eyes.
Not taken in and received.

describe parts of me, but who I am - and
what I need - is something I have to find out
myself.”
