Disruptive innovation is a driver for change in public health informatics; as a health
informatics professional, which innovation do you think had the most significant impact
during the COVID-19 pandemic and why?
Disruptive innovation is the critical innovation that has the most significant impact on Covid-19
management. It is defined as the innovation that transforms highly sophisticated or expensive
products and services accessed previously by more skilled and wealthy consumers. The noted
point is that disruptive technologies have played a critical role in healthcare, especially in how
healthcare professionals dealt with the Covid-19 pandemic (Almarzooq, Lopes & Kochar, 2020).
These technologies include robotics, distributed power systems, blockchain, 3D printing,
artificial intelligence, and genomics. Healthcare professionals have used robotics to deliver
medications and food and screen the temperature of people. On the same, 3D printing and
robotics are advanced technologies used by manufacturing companies to enhance social
distancing at the workplace to reduce the spread of Covid-19 (Strusani & Houngbonon, 2021).
Companies have used technologies such as big data analytics, digital platforms, and artificial
intelligence during this Covid-19 to soften the economy's shocks and offer social welfare
programs to the poor people in the community.
The Covid-19 resulted in home-based working solutions evident in the first few months of 2020,
where there was an increase in the use of the internet by the users working from home. The
governments, citizens, and businesses witnessed dramatic changes which affected the operations
due to lockdowns and the Covid-19 pandemic (Strusani & Houngbonon, 2021). Several
companies quickly set new strategies that enabled workers to work from home, serve clients, and
maintain positive relationships with customers in the market through online interaction. Multiple
governments have introduced new strategies through technologies so that to continue having an
interaction with citizens. Covid-19 pandemic has forced education institutions across the globe
to shift to online instruction using several media such as text messages, the internet, radio, and
television to build resilience (Almarzooq, Lopes & Kochar, 2020). Lastly, online telemedicine
2. companies, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical platforms in the health sector have realized
increased demands due to shifting patient preferences to online healthcare services.
