2. Introduction
Kenneth Randall is an Alabama-based lawyer who formerly
served as dean and law professor at the The University of
Alabama School of Law. Outside of his professional pursuits,
Kenneth Randall has helped in charitable organizations such
as Project Blessings.
Project Blessings is a non-profit organization that helps
underprivileged and low-income families achieve a higher
quality of living by renovating their homes. The organization
was initially built to cater to the April 2011 tornado that hit
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and displaced numerous residents in
the area.
Resulting from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes are
considered to be some of nature's most violent storms.
3. Safe Rooms
With winds that may reach up to 300 miles per hour,
the damage path of a tornado may be as long as 50
miles and as wide as one mile. This poses a serious
threat to buildings and their occupants.
Residents may build a safe room in order to for them
have a place of refuge in the case of a tornado. There
are several places in the home where a safe room can
be built. Safe rooms below the ground are considered
to offer the greatest protection, but safe rooms on the
first floor may also provide the necessary shelter. The
basement and an interior room on the ground floor are
great places to start, but a safe room can also be built
atop a concrete slab-on-grade foundation or garage
floor.
