3. Background of the organization
Life After Matric (LAM) is a non-profit organization established in 2012 by young residents from
Hammanskraal who were enrolled at different academic institutions. The organisation started off as
career workshops offered to high school learners, presented by students from around the
community together with fellow LAM members. The focus of the presentation was to expose the
learners and help them utilize facilities, resources and the information available to them. LAM does
not only focus on those who matriculate, but is called LAM as matric is the minimum qualification
an individual needs to access any employment sector, or to further their education.
4. Why the specific target groups?
Challenges facing the target groups
Lack of exposure _ this results in poor choices, from grade 9 when the learners choose
subjects, to grade 12 when they choose a career to follow.
The inability to use what is at our disposal to our advantage i.e. information on the internet
, local community radio, local municipality
Side-lined (marginalised) by the education system_ the classroom is not accommodative of
all learners’ abilities. It only caters and acknowledges certain attributes such as academic
excellence, but offers little or no avenue for those who excel in the arts, sports or any other
skill besides academic excellence.
Unidentified talents, gifts and unused skills. The youth in this group end up in a high
percentage of drop outs, since they are unable to compete in the classroom, they also add to
the large proportion of the unemployed youth of South Africa.
Some leaners find themselves out of school due age, they no longer qualify to further
continue until grade 12, and instead of enrolling at FETs or adult school, a lot give up.

6.Business model
Our business model relies on three key role players: the government, the community and the
participants. We believe that as each take full responsibility the classroom education will be key to
developing and shaping an individual preparing them to access the world beyond the classroom.
The business model allows us to answer the how problem, and propose solutions of the above mentioned
challenges. The key aspect is forming relationships with the above parties in the model, to carry out the
objectives of the organization.
