Trends and Growth 2023-
2029
2. • Coal to liquid (CTL) is a process that converts coal
into liquid fuels, primarily synthetic crude oil,
diesel, or gasoline. It is a form of coal
liquefaction, which involves chemically
transforming solid coal into liquid hydrocarbon
products.
• The CTL process typically involves several steps:
• Coal Preparation: The coal is crushed and
pulverized into a fine powder to increase its
surface area, making it more reactive during
subsequent processing steps.
• Coal Gasification: The powdered coal is heated to
high temperatures in the presence of oxygen and
steam, resulting in a reaction known as
gasification. This converts the coal into a mixture
of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen gas (H2),
called synthesis gas or syngas.
3. Gas Cleanup: The syngas is subjected to various purification
steps to remove impurities such as sulfur, mercury, and
particulate matter. This is important to ensure the quality of
the final liquid fuels.
Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis: The cleaned syngas is then fed into
a reactor where it undergoes the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,
named after the chemists who developed the process. This
step involves catalytic reactions that convert the syngas into
longer hydrocarbon chains, which form liquid hydrocarbon
products.
Product Refining: The liquid hydrocarbon products obtained
from the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are further refined to
improve their quality and remove any remaining impurities.
The refining processes may include distillation, cracking, and
hydrogenation.
4. • CTL technology has been developed and used
commercially in several countries, including South Africa
and China. It offers an alternative means of producing
liquid fuels, particularly in regions with abundant coal
reserves but limited conventional oil resources.
However, CTL has certain challenges and drawbacks,
including high capital costs, substantial carbon dioxide
(CO2) emissions, and environmental concerns
associated with coal mining and processing.
• Given the increasing focus on reducing greenhouse gas
emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources,
there has been a shift toward renewable energy
alternatives and cleaner transportation fuels. As a
result, CTL technology has faced criticism and has been
less favored compared to other options such as natural
gas, biofuels, and electric vehicles.
