Post-holiday blues
By Katy Carson
Happy new year everyone! I hope you all have good Christmases and New Year’s parties. Ok all the
presents are opened, Christmas dinners eaten and Auld Lang Syne belted out at the top of our lungs.
But now holiday blues set in and we all have to get back to our reality. I don’t mean just us lot at
university either. Others have to go to work and we all remember going back to school too. Everyone
has a routine to get back to.
But now things get real. Exam season is looming. Back to late night cramming sessions, pouring over
notes and being barricaded with books and stacks of notes. No more procrastinating that bit of work
you have been dodging. You have to jump in with both feet and keep the momentum going for the
next six months. Get me, huh? Sitting at my laptop and saying to get your butt in gear. But trust me
that was as much meant for me as for you. We all need a good talking too after the holiday season.
Don’t we?
I know six months sounds like a long time when you say it like that. But as the saying goes ‘it’ll fly
by’. Before we know it we’ll be job hunting or doing the next year of our degrees or moving on to
bigger things. I used to shake my head at my brother when he used to tell me that my time at uni
would go so fast I’d wonder where it went. But, and I’d never admit this to his face,he was right. One
minute I’m looking around on induction day for a friend, the next I’m staring down the barrel of the
figurative gun that is the ‘real world’. I’m sure you know what I mean.
We may moan and groan about going back to uni now. But we’ll miss this when it’s gone: the routine
the lack of total responsibility. Oh well, hope you all had a good holiday and settle back in ok. I’m out
of here. Got to bury myself in uni work myself!
