1. In response to your request for assistance
Dear Ms. Bostick:
Your letter sent to President Obama has been referred to our office. We are very sorry to learn that your
son has been personally affected by the horrible crimes our office aims to prevent, and we appreciate the
courage it takes to reach out for help.
The Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), a component of the Department of Justice, was created
in 1995 to provide national leadership in developing the nation’s capacity to reduce violence against
women through the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). We administer
financial and technical assistance to communities across the country that are developing programs,
policies and practices aimed at ending domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
While OVW cannot become involved with individual cases, one national organization you might
consider contacting is the National Center for Victims of Crime. The National Center for Victims of
Crime developed a list of resources for victims of stalking. We encourage you to review these resources
at www.victimsofcrime.org/our-programs/stalking-resource-center.
We know that it is difficult to tell your story, especially to a stranger, and we respect the bravery that it
took to write your letter. We deeply regret that we cannot provide direct assistance to you, but
encourage you to keep seeking the help, safety and the justice you deserve.
Sincerely,
Bea Hanson
Principal Deputy Director
