This encyclopedia covers LGBTQ
topics in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin
America and the Caribbean, and
the Middle East, as well as North
America, and takes an
interdisciplinary approach to the
subject, using film, literature,
human rights, politics, landmark
legislation, activism, the arts,
language, sports, and historical
events as points of entry into the
content.
3. HOW TO ACCESS
• Step One: Go to Loyola University Chicago Libraries’ home page
(http://libraries.luc.edu/) and login with your LUC username and password
• Step Two: In the general search bar (all collections) search ”Global Encyclopedia of
LGBT History”
• Step Three: The correct title should be in the top three hits (look for an orange and
white cover with a world map). The item is only available online, so click on the green
“available online” link. You will be redirected to Gale Ebooks.
• Step Four: Browse or search according to your criteria/interests
4. CONTENTS

– Thematic Outline: organized under twenty-one major categories, which are further split
into eleven subcategories. The entries are listed alphabetically within each category or
subcategory. For ease of reference, the same entry may be listed under multiple

5. USES
This is a ready reference resource to be used as a point of entry into LGBT historical
research. For those beginning academic or personal inquiries, this is the most
comprehensive reference resource of international LGBT historical events and people.
Researchers may browse alphabetically by topic or using the thoroughly compiled
thematic outline provided within the encyclopedia.
6. HOW TO SEARCH
There are several ways to approach searching this resource:
1. You may begin by browsing the Table of Contents for each volume. The TOC
provide the names of important topics and a short description of each topic, as
well as where in the book you can find more information. Determine which topics
are most relevant to your interests, make note of the page numbers indicated in
the TOC, and search by page number.
2. Within each volume, the reference entries in alphabetical order are broken up into
several different groups. Expand the group that interests you, and direct links will
take you to the complete reference entry for every topic in that grouping.
3. Search/Browse using the thematic outline for reference entries according to theme.
7. SEARCH EXAMPLE
I am interested in learning more about: Asexuality
Step 1: My topic begins with A, so I know that
Volume 1 will have the initial reference I am
interested in. Go to Volume 1.
Step 2: At the bottom of the page are the
groupings according to alphabetical order,
indicated by arrows. Expand the first arrow, which
has all of the A references.
Step 3: Scroll down to Asexuality and follow the
link to the reference.
8. BROWSING
The best way to browse this resource is by using the Table of Contents.
Beginning with the letter A, you can browse every
reference entry in all three volumes in alphabetical order.
