COME & EXPLORE THE FAC
The FAC’s team can take you on a tour of discovery behind
the scenes with your community or school group.
Frankston Art Centre boasts one of the largest stages in
Victoria outside of Melbourne City. Our professional
backstage team deliver performances in circus, comedy,
drama, dance, film, contemporary and classical music,
musical theatre, the list is endless!
If you want to learn more about theatre and what happens
backstage, we can tailor workshops for groups on Lighting
Design and Operations, Production, Events Management,
Exhibition Planning and more. Bookings required.
LIVE ARTS PRODUCTION
Work alongside professional technicians to learn about their
craft in lighting, rigging, stage management and logistics.
Suitable for ages 7-12 years
$15 per student (minimum 10)
WORK EXPERIENCE AND INTERNSHIPS
Each year the FAC has a limited number of opportunities for
Year 10, VCAL and tertiary students to experience our
creative and energetic environment. If your placement
coincides with performances, we will offer you the
opportunity to work as a volunteer usher. In some cases you
may be able to shadow our theatre technicians. Please note –
many of these events are in the evening.

The FAC’s Education Programs enable students to deepen their
understanding of the arts by giving all ages the opportunity to
engage, interact and learn from industry professionals and
emerging artists. Our programs allow students to grow in their
own practices of visual art, drama, music, theatre and literacy
while achieving curriculum outcomes.
We offer a range of Public Programs that encourage a deep
love of the arts across all ages that allow the community to
participate in workshops delivered by prestigious touring arts
companies from across the country and provide artists with the
opportunity to enhance their skills and pathways into the
creative industries.
The FAC supports local artists through The Edge, a free online
network outlining artist profiles, opportunities and events. Our
Arts Access programs provide targeted opportunities for
people of all abilities to join in the creative life of our
community.
The Education and Public Programs outlined in this booklet are
evident of our accessible, interactive and inspiring programs
available in 2017 with more to be announced as the year goes
by. We aim to respond to our community’s needs and our FAC
Programming & Engagement team is ready to discuss how the
FAC can deliver arts experiences to suit you.

David Walliams’ book comes alive in a play by Maryam
Master. It starts when Chloe makes friends with Mr Stink,
the local tramp. When Mr Stink needs a place to stay,
Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed.

OUTREACH: Digital Workshops that come to you!
Schools have the opportunity to access digital workshops in
your school to coincide with the performance. These inter-
active workshops will connect literacy with the arts, explore
themes of the book by David Walliams with practical
exercises to engage your students.

Following the 11am performance on 17 March, students have
the opportunity to speak directly with the cast in a post-show

In July, we are offering four Teaching Artist Workshops in
your kindergarten (45 min) or primary school (6o min). The

performance and will include environment and sustainability
activities, tailored drama activities exploring literacy,
expression and comprehension, characterisation and a guest

Filled with dance, music, songs and stories, Saltbush follows
two friends on their journey through the Australian land-
scape; from river country to an urban landscape, through
desert and through sea.
Children will find themselves immersed in a live, projected
artwork that introduces them to the shared culture and
language of Indigenous Australia and be enthralled by the
landscape that unfolds around them.
OUTREACH: Aboriginal Dance & Movement Workshops

The cast of Saltbush will take students through movement
and dance and invite them to engage with the storyline of

Students can enjoy a one-off or a series of beginner Circus
Classes, led by our professional trainers in Cube 37’s specially
equipped circus training studio.
Circus is a fun way to develop fundamental life skills such as
coordination, team work, creativity, trust, mental and physical
health. Our workshops cover aerial skills, tumbling, acro-
balance, juggling, clowning and much more.

Experience the mystery and magic of behind the scenes,
shine a spotlight, raise the curtain and stand centre stage.
FAC guided tours cover the theatre, Cube 37 and exhibition
spaces. Make it a day by visiting the Frankston Library and
other venues in our city. Have lunch in the wonderful Cube
courtyard or walk down to the foreshore if the weather is nice.

CORANDERRK is on the 2017 VCAA Playlist for Drama!
This production tells the story of the campaign to keep the
Coranderrk reserve in Aboriginal hands. In 1881, the men and
women of the Coranderrk Aboriginal reserve went head-to-
head with the Aboriginal Protection Board. It revives the
voices of all those, black and white, who fought for a better
pact between the country’s oldest and newest inhabitants.
Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are warned that
this production contains images of deceased persons.

All ticket holders are invited to come into the theatre prior
to the performance for the opportunity to hear about the
development process for this special production, and what it

political system foreign to their own.

This uncompromising and dark production explores the tense
relationship and prejudices between those that have, and
those that don’t. Dark in its humour and bawdy in its romantic
hijinks, The Merchant of Venice takes audiences on a journey
of love, mercy and justice.

WORKSHOPS: Regional Access Workshops with
Bell Shakespeare – MONDAY 24 JULY
The Regional Access Workshops are presented by a member
of The Players. The Players are professional actors and/or
directors who have worked with Bell Shakespeare in main
stage productions or in-school performances, and have been
trained by the company as teachers. The Players present all
Bell Shakespeare programmes and have a wealth of
performance experience and knowledge of Shakespeare.
The workshops, 75 minutes in duration, are highly practical
and cover plot synopsis, character journeys and design images
from the production. Crossing many disciplines for teachers
and students, these workshops are not to be missed.

Be Your Self Redux fuses Garry Stewart’s audacious
choreography with spoken word to create an exciting dance

School groups are invited to a ‘sneak peek’ of the
performance. This is a unique opportunity for audiences to

comes this new adaptation of Bram Stoker's twisted tale.
Dracula is a story of opposites: love vs hate; entrapment vs
abandonment; good vs evil; light vs dark; supernatural vs
science; violence vs love; modern vs traditional. These
dichotomies exist to drive the narrative and to highlight the
extreme nature of the dramatic piece. Investigate Gothic
Theatre, adaptions of a classical text, gender representations,

Baluk Arts will take you through interactive ‘hands on’ art
practices connected to culture. Baluk Arts is a non-profit
Victorian Aboriginal arts organisation based in Mornington
owned by Aboriginal artists from Frankston, the Mornington
Peninsula and greater Melbourne. Baluk artists are from
diverse Aboriginal backgrounds from all over Australia and
share their stories through artwork in many different mediums.

VENTANA MURGA CELEBRATIONS
A murga (moorga) is a carnival celebrated in Cadiz (Spain),
Uruguay and Argentina. This year the murga is to be held on
SATURDAY 11 MARCH, 12pm at the 2017 Street Fiesta, with
a preview at the Opening on Friday 24 February, 7pm.

Join the Carnival Parade for the Ventana Street Fiesta 2017!
In the multi-art workshops you will become part of an
authentic South American murga carnival community by
learning the dances, songs, acting and craft involved. Even

Every term Hip Cat Circus teaches circus skills to ages 5+ in
a positive learning environment led by professional trainers.

Discover the beauty of perished handcrafts
and be inspired by artist Mirjana Margetic,
who uses mixed media to explore, interpret,
and navigate many traditional crafts and
found objects. Explore concepts of identity
and memory by bringing along your own lost
or found traditional craft piece to alter with
newly learnt mixed media skills. Suitable for
adults or ages 15+ years. Extra materials
provided. $30 per participant.

ART IN DIALYSIS
Since September 2011 art therapist Melissa
Banks has been working with patients in the
dialysis ward of Frankston Hospital. Patients
participate in discussions about art, learn new
drawing and painting techniques, explore
with colour and use recycled materials to
create art.

BAM Allstars
GET OUT!
Get Out! is a performing arts program
developed by Arts Access Victoria for adults
with a disability, providing respite for their
family and voluntary carers. Workshops are
exploratory, developmental, skill based,
social and fun.
CIRQUE SUR ROUES
Cirque sur Roues (Circus on Wheels) is an
inclusive circus, catering for adults of all
abilities and welcoming people with physical
and intellectual disability and acquired brain
injury. Aligned with school terms, the classes
run once per week.
ALL ABILITIES DANCE (BAM ALLSTARS)
BAM Allstars presents an all-abilities
accessible dance class, led by a professional
facilitator. Participants attend with a carer.
