Streaks is an app aimed at encouraging positive routines and behaviors for teenagers and young adults who are not employed or in education (NEETs). It uses gamification by tracking users' progress on daily habits and allowing them to compete with others. The app was designed based on research that found NEETs often have poor routines like irregular sleep and lack of physical activity. Interviews and surveys identified pain points like lack of activity and motivation. The app aims to address these issues by motivating users to develop healthy habits through tracking routines and competitive elements.

Encouraging Positive Routines for NEETs

3. What is Streaks?
Streaks is an app aimed at teenagers and young adults
who are not employed or in education. It is an app
designed to inspire positive routines and behaviours
within this demographic.
4. App concept
Streaks is an app which inspires healthy routines, via gamifying and
quantifying healthy habits and routines of it’s users. It does this through listing
different targets and habits within a digest for each user.
It intuitively displays progress towards completing this task through a feature
called ‘snail race’ which allows players to compete on the task progress,
adding a motivational and gamified element.
8. Problem Statement
In my research on NEETs aged 18 - 25, I've noticed a trend of respondents having
poor habits, such as: irregular sleeping patterns, feelings of frustration and lack of
physical activity.
Studies have shown that being aware of your routines has a positive impact on your
mental health as it allows you to establish priorities, improve empathy, and more
importantly, encourage healthier habits.
From these observations it’s clear to see that there is a clear opportunity to improve
the habits of NEETs through positive motivational messaging and active lifestyle
choice.
9. How do you conduct research on this demographic?
• In person interviews
• Across this project I conducted some in-person interviews and discussed pain
points with this demographic.
• Online interviews
• To get a wider range of data, I pursued some online interviews on various
subreddits and online channels.
• Field Study
• I worked with a NEET I know and asked for information throughout their day,
maintaining notes and getting a 1st person view.
10. In person interviews
Within this section I broke my in person interviews into particular ‘pain
points’ that I discussed with them. I believe working with each
interviewee like this gave me concise data and particular points I can
tailor my problem statement to.
11. In person interviews
I broke this down further into an affinity diagram and I was able to identify
pain points such as: a lack of activity, looking for things to do, wanting to fill
time, sleep deprivation, and waking up late.
12.
13. Online Interviews
I produced an online survey which I
posted to different social media networks
such as Reddit and Telegram to different
groups that were a lot of places NEETs
might congregate
This provided quantitative research as
shown on the left, which proved very
helpful in searching for more data.
14. Online Interviews
• Here is some example
quantitative data from my online
survey.
• This is the gender mix I
managed to obtain from my
data. As we can see, the
feedback was male dominated,
however I had a good range of
data to work from.
15. Online Interviews
• I also looked at how much time
the audience spent with others. I
noticed this is noticeably lower,
so possibly I could look into
encouraging more social
cohesion.
16. Online Interviews
This research also provided key points which backed up my problem
statement, such as continuing a general theme of poor sleeping patterns
and bad habits.
17. Field Study
For field study, I spent time with a 16-25
year old NEET and analysed what their
daily activity was like.
I noticed a lack of routine in certain aspects,
and through discussion with them analysed
that that was a particular pain point.
20. Core Insights
One of my core insights was
based around a very common
theme I found in a lot of my
research, which included a very
large lack of physical activity, in
particular, oversleeping.
The concept of oversleeping
came up in more than 10 survey
results, and much more of my
data.
21. How did you come up with your final app concept?
Chosen via relation to the problem statement, Streaks was built by
merging together my top 3 ideas via stripping them apart, and
combining them via relevancy.
- lack of activity
- looking for things to do
- wanting to fill time
-sleep deprivation / waking up late.
This data was obtained through the qualitative and quantitive data
through in person interviews and online surveys.
22. How did you come up with your final app concept?
N.B Merging my ideas for this app also rendered my decision matrix
irrelevant, as ideas were borrowed from all of my listed application concepts
within it.
26. Usability Testing
• I ran some usability testing on my
wireframes to ensure that my design
was effective and easy to use for
this age group.
• I ran tests on the key elements and
identified the need for a guided tour
once the app is closer to production.
• This allowed me to shape my XD
mockup too.
27. Moodboard
I wanted to create branding for this project
that would be deemed as ‘motivational’ for
this specific demographic, as a lot of this
app revolves around activity, setting
routine, and changing habits.
So I executed this by creating a theme that
includes bright colours, graffiti style font
work, and bold iconography.
I took design cues from artists known for
using bright colour palettes such as Morag
Mysercough, Camilla Wallala and
additionally referencing previous work from
DICE and Snapchat.

29. Design Guidelines
• I created a set of design guidelines to follow throughout my app to ensure
consistent house styling and polish throughout.
30.
31. The Streaks graphical device
• I experimented with several graphical devices throughout my design, using
strikethroughs, bold text, and a background that consists of a motivational
marketing message of my app.
