This document discusses the parenteral route of drug administration. Parenteral administration means delivering drugs through any route other than the digestive tract, such as intramuscular, intravenous, or subcutaneous injection. The primary routes are intramuscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous injection. Intravenous administration is the fastest way to deliver drugs throughout the body via the circulation. Other intraarterial routes include intracardiac, intraspinal, intracerebral, intraocular, and intra-abdominal injection. Parenteral administration provides immediate effects but requires trained personnel, is more expensive than other routes, and causes some inevitable pain.

2. PARENTERAL ROUTE OF DRUG
ADMINISTRATION
Definition:-
The path taken by the drug to
get into the body is known as the route of
drug administration. A drug may be in
ionized or unionized form.
4. 1.PRIMARY ROUTE
I) IM (Intramuscular):-
It is the injection of a substance
directly inserted into muscle
e.g. :- cephalosporin,
haloperidol,
morphine
5. ii) IV (Intravenous)
is a therapy that delivers liquid substances directly
into a vein (intra- + ven- + -ous).
The intravenous route is the fastest way to
deliver medications and fluid
replacement throughout the body, because the
circulation carries them.
e.g. :- dextrose,
mannitol
6. iii) Sc (subcutaneous)
is administered as abolus into the subcutis.
the layer of skin directly below
the dermis and epidermis, collectively referred to
as the cutis.
e.g. :- insulin,
morphine
7. 2. INTRAARTERIAL
Intraarterial means drug administered within or
into the artery or arteries.
e.g. :-Anticancer agent for drug targeting to a
particular organ
8. i) Intracardiac
injections are injections that are given directly
into the heart muscles or ventricles.
e.g. :- Antiarrthymatic drugs
Quinidine,
propanolol
9. ii) Intraspinal
Drugs are given directly into ground of spinal
cord, spinal column and especially the vertebral
canal.
e.g. :- Anaesthetics drugs:- lidocaine,
propofol
10. III) Intracerebral
Drugs are introduced or administered into the
cerebrum.
e.g. :- Adrenaline,
amphetamine
11. iv) Intraocular
Drug are administrated by entering the eyeball
and around of eyes.
e.g. :- Avastin,
carbacol
12. v) Intra-abdominal
Drugs are administered through the cavity of the
abdomen. And this is one given to
intraperitoneal.
e.g. :-dialysis solution
heparin
13. Advantages
1. An immediate physiological response can be
achieved
2. Suitable for uncooperative, nauseous or
unconscious patients must he administered by
injection
3. Provides correcting serious disturbances of fluid
and electronic balances
4. gives the physician control of the drug since the
patient must return for continued treatment.
14. Disadvantage
1. Required trained personnel and require more
time than those administered by other routes
2. It is difficult to reverse its physiological effect
3. It is more expensive than preparations of given
by other routes
4. requires strict adherence to aseptic procedures
and some pain on injection is inevitable.
