Science fiction (SciFi) feature films offer viewers a glimpse into the future, revealing unique interfaces, social systems, and complex human relations. In this paper, we report a trial conducted by the Science Fiction Special Interest Group (SIG-SciFi) to gain insight into probable human-centered design (HCD) trends and the database of scenes col- lected to be used as good references for futuristic design. Characteris- tic scenes from the movie Minority Report, X-Men II, and The Island were analyzed. Our argument and analysis began with a top-down ar- rangement of scenes in descending order of importance. Then, extracted characteristic scenes were classified hierarchically while considering the worldview of the movie. As a result, suggestions were obtained pertaining to the direction of HCD in the near future. The results of this analysis are arranged into the database which can be immediately applied as a design tool.

Introduction
●
The importance of HCD is growing in various
felds with information technology (IT)
– industrial products, services, etc...
●
We need novel design!
– Could anyone imagine modern smart phones in only a
decade ago, even if there were many PDAs
●
Our group asks SciFi movies for futuristic idea
– SciFi movies help us in imaging new technologies

SIG-SciFi (SF-SIG)
●
Not an academic research group
– More than half of members are from industries
– Common characteristics of members are 'SciFi
enthusiasts'
●
It's aim
– Pursuing novel idea of UI design and HCD
concept from the cases illustrated in the
scenes of SciFi movies
●
to utilize their own work in the future
●
to seek research idea

The Idea on the Scene Database
designers
databasemovies
Scenes which contain some
images of futuristic
interface designs are
collected and classified into
several hierarchical
categories.
Designers refer the
database to get their new
idea in their own designing
work.

A Scenario to Utilize the DB
●
STEP 1: A user consults the database with
ambiguous awareness of his/her problems
– The database ofers large categories to solve
the problem
●
STEP 2: Next, the user focuses on smaller
groups within the category
– To seek its solution represented in details
●
STEP 3: The user can get an idea to solve
the problem according to the case study
– Solutions are shown as the scenes selected
from the database

A Problem
●
Visual information from movies are
powerful enough to illustrate its situation
– How the interface works,
– How the user interact with the device,
– What the object in the interface are, etc.
●
However, the IP problems should be
eliminated
– especially if the database is disclosed to the
public

The Proposed Solution
●
(it is not implemented)
database DVD/BD player
Control the player to
provide appropriate scene
without IP violation
User must by their own
software of SciFi movies to
avoid violating IP rights

Conclusions and Future Work
●
Activities and results of SIG-SciFi
organized in HCD-Net Japan are reported.
●
The scene database was created.
– The DB has records which contain scene title,
description, class and category, and timecode
to the scene.
– The records were arranged hierarchically
according to the objective of the interface.
●
New implementation of a DB system
which does not violate IP problem is
planned as our future work.
