Balsamic vinegar on ice cream?
Heck yes! Local strawberries
macerated in Metropolitan Market’s
signature sweet, complex vinegar
make an amazing topping to
wow guests.
Pairs like a dream
You’ll always find the freshest, sweetest strawberries at Metropolitan
Market, from the beginning of growing season in late May through the last
great berry moments each summer.
There are 3 big reasons our berries are the best!
Strawberry Terrine

Uptown, Kirkland, Magnolia:
Sat. 6/20, 11AM-2PM
Layers and layers and layers
of strawberries! Oh, and pound
cake too. Come and get it in the
Kiosk, then make your own
with Recipe #216.
1. Local Berries Taste Better
Standard berries are bred to withstand shipping across country and last for days on shelves.
Local berries don’t have to last a long time, since they make it from plant to Metropolitan Market
to your mouth on the same day. That means they can be bred solely for great flavor instead.
2. We Seek Out Better Berries
There’s no way to predict when a strawberry will reach its peak of sweetness — you just
have to keep tasting until they’re ready. Our Produce Specialist, Dino, regularly visits the
farmers who supply our berries. Throughout early summer, he drives to the farms, checking
in on how our best berries are doing. When he finds the right flavor, those berries are picked
that morning and shipped the same day to our stores — meaning you get only the sweetest,
freshest strawberries.
3. Our Strawberries Are Picked at the Peak of Sweetness
Our strawberries do more by 6AM than most get done in a day. That’s because they don’t trek
all over the country — the freshest, sweetest berries never make it far from home.
Let’s imagine a day in the life of a Met Market strawberry, shall we?

Whiskey Smash
Woodinville Whiskey’s notes of vanilla
pair well with strawberries. Muddle
some strawberries with mint and top
with whiskey, a splash of lime, and ice
for a quick strawberry mint smash.
White Sangria
In a large bowl, combine
Viognier, Albariño, or another
floral, fruit-foward white wine
with slices of strawberry and
other fruit. Instant sangria!
Lemonade Twist
Strawberries + lemonade =
a match made in heaven. Add
a sprig of mint and you’re the
star of the block party.
Classic Champagne
Drop a few small pieces of
fresh strawberry into a cold
glass of white or sparkling
wine, add a little bit of Lillet or
elderflower liqueur, and wait
for the compliments.
Sparkling Soda
Muddle a few slices of
strawberries and lime in
a cup, top with cold club
soda and some ice.
The Stem Gem strawberry stem remover from Chef'n makes
quick work of a flat of local berries. Canners rejoice, as it cuts
down on one of the most tedious parts of preserving. The
push-button mechanism is so easy, the kids can even help out.

Hood: A large, bright, glossy red fruit, the Hood gets even darker as it
ripens. Expect a nice sweet flavor that’s excellent for preserves and jams,
but good for most anything you want with strawberries.
Puget Crimson: Large, firm berries have an outstanding sweet, rich
strawberry flavor. This is one of the best varieties for fresh eating and
freezing, and makes very flavorful preserves.
Puget Reliance: Large medium-red, smooth, glossy fruit is very
similar to Totems and makes fantastic jam.
Puget Summer: This strawberry comes around later in the season,
offering excellent flavor and fruit quality. Good for all uses.
Rainier: Related to the Shuksan, this is a late season berry that grows
big with flavor to match. The Rainier is dark red with a slightly white to
creamy pink flesh when ripe. Vibrant flavor and intense sweetness make
them great for eating fresh.
Shuksan: One of the most sought after, its glossy, bright-red fruit has
slightly indented yellowish red seeds. The Shuksan is good for eating
fresh, and its incredible flavor holds well for freezing or making jam.
Tillamook: Bigger than others, this is a high-quality, attractive berry.
The red color is a bit lighter than a Totem, but it has a better appearance
and sweeter berry flavor that is a delight to eat fresh or jar.
Totem: This conical berry is intensely medium to dark red in color, both
internally and externally. Totems are excellent for processing as they have
a relatively firm texture. By far, they’re the best berry for freezing.

Baby Back Ribs: These tender crowd
favorites are great for all occasions. Just

Spare Ribs: Meaty and succulent — like the

Hickory House Ribs: These award-
winning ribs are world famous and smoked in
Colorado just for us. Fully cooked and ready
to party, pick up a rack — or five — and you
have the makings of a summer shindig.
Beef Ribs: Thick in bone and in meat,
these ribs could use a little help on timing
and marinating. Try letting them hang out
overnight in a marinade or just give them a
good rub if that’s your style. Start these big
boys on the top rack of the grill and once
they’re cooked through, feel free to get ’em
closer to the flame for a crunchy char.
Rib Steaks: OK, so it’s not quite the “ribs”
you might think of, but a rib steak is a great
alternative for folks who don’t want to get
messy with saucy finger foods, or for those of
us who just want more meat with less work.

Whiskey is cropping up in the Pacific Northwest at some of the finest
distillers, and you’ll likely find plenty of local spirits to pour when you
browse our selection.
Unlike anything else being offered in the area, Westland Distillery is
making a single malt Scotch-style whiskey that has all the makings of a
Scotch collector’s next buy. With similar climate and practices to those that
made Scotland’s spirits famous, Westland might just be our new favorite
drinking companion.
Want some more local booze for your bar? Oola Distillery on Capitol
Hill, Woodinville Whiskey on the Eastside, 2Bar Spirits in SODO, and
Ransom in Oregon are all making great local whiskey we’re proud to stock.

Spotlight On: Pfriem Brewing Co., Hood River, OR
Family owned Pfriem Brewing Company only opened in Hood
River, Oregon in 2012. But their Pacific Northwest beers, with
strong Belgian influence, quickly rose to popularity and bars
everywhere fought to get their astoundingly good beers on tap.
In April 2015, they finally released several of their beers in bottles,
and they headed straight to Metropolitan Market. Try our favorites,
including the Belgian Strong Ale and their excellent IPAs.

Olympia Provisions Cotto is large

masters Olympia Provisions. Seasoned
with the traditional garlic and black
pepper, they also add fennel, rosemary,
and a dash of chili flakes. Tuck a tangle
of thin slices inside soft bread for a great
sandwich — and don’t forget to slather
on some tapenade from our olive bar.
Fentimans vintage-inspired
botanically brewed sodas come
in elegant flavors like Victorian
Lemonade and Curiosity Cola.
Good Pops are certified non-GMO popsicles made in
Austin, Texas using all natural ingredients in delicious
flavors. Try waking up to a Cold Brew Coffee pop,
dunking a Watermelon Agave or Hibiscus Mint in your
margarita, or feeling like a kid again with Strawberry
Lemonade or Chocolate Milk.
The addition of grapefruit to
Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA
gives the already citrusy hopped
beer a super refreshing flavor.
Ruby red grapefruit and a kick
of ginger give Texas mainstay
Shiner a summery brightness
that pairs well with a hammock.

Anthem Cherry Cider from
Salem, Oregon is sharpened with
tart and sweet cherries, giving a

the semi-dry cider.
Sheffield Cider’s Apple Cherry

great for the whole family. This

The New Take Out:
a backyard picnic
BYOB: Beverage Picks for Backyard Bliss
Rainier cherries are rolling in this
month, with all their red-stamped
yellowy beauty. They’ll keep getting
bigger and sweeter as the season
rolls on, but you never forget your
first of the year.
Soft and spongy with a thin crust, Macrina’s
Ciabatta Rolls are ideal for making a quality
sandwich. Shave a firm cheese onto one side
and pile with thinly sliced meat like OP Cotto
or prosciutto. We recommend dense Pecorino
Sardo sheep’s milk cheese from Italy. Drizzle
on a little Metropolitan Market Balsamic or
Organic Estate Olive Oil for a flavorful finish.
Traditional methods meet unexpected flavors in
sophisticated accoutrements by Three Little
Figs. Locally sourced ingredients are cooked
up in Portland. Try the French Onion Confit
with Gruyere for a decadent grilled cheese,
or pair the Tomato Tapas jam with Manchego.
Whatever your choice, your sandwiches and
cheese plates won’t know what hit ’em.

Three Twins: Organic ice cream from San Francisco is
edging its way into our freezers with its hugely popular
flavors. Try the Lemon Cookie for a bright and tangy

Blue Hill is one of the most famous and respected
names in the restaurant world. Co-owner and chef
of Blue Hill in Manhattan and Blue Hill at Stone
Barns, Dan Barber has won multiple James Beard
Awards and was appointed by President Obama to the President’s
Council on Physical Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.
The cows at Blue Hill Farm are all grass-fed and humanely raised,
and their milk makes some of the best yogurt of all time. Savory
flavors including Beet, Sweet Potato, Carrot, and Butternut Squash
make this the most unique yogurt on the market. Eat it as an offbeat
morning meal, or cook it into cheesecake, soup, and more.

Fresh chevre from Salt Spring Island Cheese is some
of the best spreadable cheese in the world. Bright,
tangy, and wonderful tossed in a salad with cherries or
strawberries and arugula, or just packed for a picnic, it’s
a must taste. Available in three varieties, with a hint
of lemon, basil, or topped with fresh flowers.
Welsh cheddar truckles from Snowdonia are conveniently
small wheels that are enough for one or two people to enjoy
and would be fantastic in a picnic basket. Try the Amber Mist
with smoky notes of Scotch, the Ruby Mist for hints of port
and brandy, or the mellow and complex Beechwood.
Bring your favorite florals to your cheese
game, with Melkbus 39 lavender, thyme, and
rosemary-infused raw milk Gouda. The MM
cheese of the month is a lovely addition to a
cheese plate, or makes a truly spectacular and
unexpected grilled cheese.

  • 2. The Sweetest Local Strawb Strawberry, Mozzarella, & Fresh Mint Salad All Stores: Wed. 6/17, 4-7PM When it’s hot outside, you gotta keep your salads cool. Stop by the Kiosk to taste your new go-to summer salad, with fresh local berries, refreshing mint, and our fresh-stretched mozzarella. Strawberry Orange Salad All Stores: Fri. 6/19, 12-3PM & 4-7PM Going on a picnic? Take along a scoop of strawberry-orange-mint salad from the Deli. Our Culinary Artists will be showing off the versatile fruit salad with one of our favorite pairings — rock fish! Lemon Baked Ricotta Soft and a bit crumbly, a slice of baked ricotta is like a fluffy bed for strawberries. With its lightly toasted rind and mildly sweet flavor, you’ll be piling berries on for breakfast or dessert. 2:59AM Hit peak sweetness. 3:00AM Plucked from vine. 5:00AM On a truck directly to Metropolitan Market. 9:00AM Go on sale at Metropolitan Market. 1:00PM Make it into your basket at the store. 1:05PM Devoured joyfully in your car. Strawberries in Met Market Balsamic with Ice Cream All Stores: Thur. 6/25, 4-7PM Balsamic vinegar on ice cream? Heck yes! Local strawberries macerated in Metropolitan Market’s signature sweet, complex vinegar make an amazing topping to wow guests. Pairs like a dream You’ll always find the freshest, sweetest strawberries at Metropolitan Market, from the beginning of growing season in late May through the last great berry moments each summer. There are 3 big reasons our berries are the best! Strawberry Terrine Proctor, Sand Point, Uptown, Kirkland, Magnolia: Sat. 6/20, 11AM-2PM Layers and layers and layers of strawberries! Oh, and pound cake too. Come and get it in the Kiosk, then make your own with Recipe #216. 1. Local Berries Taste Better Standard berries are bred to withstand shipping across country and last for days on shelves. Local berries don’t have to last a long time, since they make it from plant to Metropolitan Market to your mouth on the same day. That means they can be bred solely for great flavor instead. 2. We Seek Out Better Berries There’s no way to predict when a strawberry will reach its peak of sweetness — you just have to keep tasting until they’re ready. Our Produce Specialist, Dino, regularly visits the farmers who supply our berries. Throughout early summer, he drives to the farms, checking in on how our best berries are doing. When he finds the right flavor, those berries are picked that morning and shipped the same day to our stores — meaning you get only the sweetest, freshest strawberries. 3. Our Strawberries Are Picked at the Peak of Sweetness Our strawberries do more by 6AM than most get done in a day. That’s because they don’t trek all over the country — the freshest, sweetest berries never make it far from home. Let’s imagine a day in the life of a Met Market strawberry, shall we?
  • 3. berries Whiskey Smash Woodinville Whiskey’s notes of vanilla pair well with strawberries. Muddle some strawberries with mint and top with whiskey, a splash of lime, and ice for a quick strawberry mint smash. White Sangria In a large bowl, combine Viognier, Albariño, or another floral, fruit-foward white wine with slices of strawberry and other fruit. Instant sangria! Lemonade Twist Strawberries + lemonade = a match made in heaven. Add a sprig of mint and you’re the star of the block party. Classic Champagne Drop a few small pieces of fresh strawberry into a cold glass of white or sparkling wine, add a little bit of Lillet or elderflower liqueur, and wait for the compliments. Sparkling Soda Muddle a few slices of strawberries and lime in a cup, top with cold club soda and some ice. The Stem Gem strawberry stem remover from Chef'n makes quick work of a flat of local berries. Canners rejoice, as it cuts down on one of the most tedious parts of preserving. The push-button mechanism is so easy, the kids can even help out. Look For These Local Strawberries Grown in the Puyallup Valley Your Canning Shortcut Strawberries Sip Your Hood: A large, bright, glossy red fruit, the Hood gets even darker as it ripens. Expect a nice sweet flavor that’s excellent for preserves and jams, but good for most anything you want with strawberries. Puget Crimson: Large, firm berries have an outstanding sweet, rich strawberry flavor. This is one of the best varieties for fresh eating and freezing, and makes very flavorful preserves. Puget Reliance: Large medium-red, smooth, glossy fruit is very similar to Totems and makes fantastic jam. Puget Summer: This strawberry comes around later in the season, offering excellent flavor and fruit quality. Good for all uses. Rainier: Related to the Shuksan, this is a late season berry that grows big with flavor to match. The Rainier is dark red with a slightly white to creamy pink flesh when ripe. Vibrant flavor and intense sweetness make them great for eating fresh. Shuksan: One of the most sought after, its glossy, bright-red fruit has slightly indented yellowish red seeds. The Shuksan is good for eating fresh, and its incredible flavor holds well for freezing or making jam. Tillamook: Bigger than others, this is a high-quality, attractive berry. The red color is a bit lighter than a Totem, but it has a better appearance and sweeter berry flavor that is a delight to eat fresh or jar. Totem: This conical berry is intensely medium to dark red in color, both internally and externally. Totems are excellent for processing as they have a relatively firm texture. By far, they’re the best berry for freezing.
