Important Tips for Successful
Weight Loss
You should consume a minimum of 2-2.5
litres (64-80 fluid ounces) of liquids per day.
This should be done slowly and throughout
the day.
8. NO GRAZING!
Solid foods should only be eaten 3 times
per day. Snacking between meals or
"grazing" on small amounts of food
throughout the day will sabotage your
weight loss. THIS WILL CAUSE YOU TO
CONSUME TOO MANY CALORIES.

Find activities you enjoy such as belly dancing,
yoga, martial arts, squash etc. Research shows
that exercise alone will NOT help you lose

14. It’s normal to go up or down 5-10 lbs due to water
retention (usually caused by excessive sodium).

It’s important for you to know that you are
not alone. There are knowledgeable,
friendly people available to support and
help you.
19. GUIDELINES FOR
DRINKING
Avoid alcohol for the first six months.
Always avoid carbonated beverages & sugary drink mixers.
Even small amounts of alcohol can cause intoxication & low blood sugar.
Never drink and drive.
Alcohol inhibits good judgement & you are much more likely to make poor food
choices.
Stick to red wines.
Be aware of the calorie content of alcohol.
If you find yourself drinking regularly to cope with emotions or stress, seek help by
consulting with your doctor.
20. A WORD ON CALORIES
Every pound of fat on your body equals approximately 3500 calories. It’s your job as a
patient to use up as much of this energy reserve as possible! ESA Health’s postoperative
calorie objectives are science-based and are designed to achieve rapid weight loss so you
will be healthier in both the short-term and the long-term.
One last thought: Some of our male
patients worry that they will lose muscle
mass. This is not the case.
22. WARNING
EATING SOFT OR SOLID FOODS TOO
EARLY IS POTENTIALLY LIFE-
THREATENING
We are aware that a few surgeons let their
patients advance to soft or solid foods
more rapidly. ESA Health is strongly
opposed to this because soft or solid foods
in the first weeks forces the stomach to
work much harder and may lead to
forceful vomiting or retching.
23. CLEAR
LIQUIDS:
400-600
CALORIES
Keep track of your daily intake to be certain
you get enough liquids. If it’s hot or humid
outside and you are sweating, you will need
to increase your fluids by 10-20%. If your
urine is dark or your mouth is dry or if you
feel dizzy, you are not drinking enough.
24. The liquid phases are your best and
quickest weight loss opportunity! You will
lose much more weight in this phase than
in any other time on this exciting journey.
Embrace this phase, as this weight loss
is the easiest! Some patients ask if they can
stay on full fluids longer than required -
