SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS: In addition to the bullet points above, each speaker should talk about their specific location needs.
SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS: Covington: Engineering rounds (checklists), checking machine settings, feeling and listening to pumps, motors, gearboxes for temp and vibrations, verifying line pressures, making sure pump seals look OK, pretrial lab work, planning and implementing lab work to machine settings. Troubleshooting - busted stock line 20 feet above you, spraying stock every where, how do we stop this without shutting the machine down, what needs to be done to fix it, lining up maintenance personnel. Analyzing process data, creating tools to help production and measure production. Converting a coating recipe given in percent into a batch in wet pounds and gallons. Designing training programs and training the hourly work force. Writing Work Orders, communicating meetings, leading safety meetings. Maintaining pulp levels, mass balancing machine pulp needs. Mass balancing screens, consistency measurements, calculating screening efficiencies. Specialty Chemicals: Chemical Eng (Production) - The main responsibility of a Production Engineer is to ensure his or her specific area of the plant is operating effectively and accordingly, producing the desired products to the specification given by customers. Every day begins with looking on PI and Proficy on the computer to view production and quality information for the previous day and present time. PI displays process data for the entire chemical plant, both live data and past, trended data. Most days involve a routine walk through the plant to check on equipment and ensure processes are working normally. There is constant interaction with the plant Operators to find out any process or maintenance issues within the plant. Engineers work with Operators to increase production throughput and production yield as well as operate the plant as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. Engineers continually seek out productivity initiatives that might involve capital investment, expensing, or reworking existing processes to improve operation or to save money. Engineers are responsible for maintaining current task and procedure manuals to provide instructions on how to operate equipment and the processes involved. Engineers participate in many groups and teams within the plant, including safety teams, optimization teams, audits, new plant installations and startup. There are daily production meetings in which production data is reported to plant representatives and management. Sometimes, the Production Engineer works with the Production Planner to coordinate the logistics of making products in the plant. Engineers are responsible for planning and carrying out plant outages where equipment is shut down and locked out for repair/inspection. It is the utmost importance that these outages are conducted safely and in a timely manner to minimize process down time. The daily roles of a Production Engineer are very dynamic and no day is the same as the previous day.
In the U.S., we operate four major chemical plants – Charleston and DeRidder, LA are our pine chemicals operations producing the ink resin and asphalt products and Covington, VA and Wickliffe, KY are our two wood-based carbon manufacturing facilities. We also operate 3 large paper mills in Covington, VA, Evadale, TX and Cottonton, AL. Packaging Science majors for our Center for Packaging Innovation in Raleigh, NC and packaging plant in Mebane, NC. We have ventures in both carbon and pine chemicals underway in China.
