2. MUSIC VIDEO PRODUCTION
• We will look at Music Videos from a number of perspectives, this
template is for you to write up your notes and to complete your
case study.
• The document is split into 3 different tasks, each with separate
questions to answer.
• Task 1 is concerned with the purposes of music videos and the
strategies employed by labels and artists
• Task 2 is concerned with the styles, techniques and conventions of
music video production
• Task 3 is your own case study into a minimum of three music
videos where you can unpack and discuss the videos considering
everything you have looked at in Task 1 and 2
3. NOTES ON COMPLETING THE
CASE STUDY
• It is often easier to show something you are discussing than to
take time describing it. With this in mind, feel free to add lots of
illustrative images from your chosen video examples. Links to
YouTube/Vevo/etc are also encouraged.
• Remember, when you make a point or define something, you
should follow this with an example, an explanation of this and
then link to further texts/videos where possible.
• If you don’t think there is enough room to add your full
response to a question, don’t just reset the font size to really
small, add an extra slide wherever necessary.
5. TASK 1 - PURPOSES
• Q1 - Outline the 3 core purposes of music video with a short
explanation for each:
• To allow the band availability of not having to play live so that
people don’t have to buy tickets to an actual concert.
• To allow the audience the advantage of interpreting the video in
the background while the song is playing.
• To get their political view or social message through to the
audience.
6. TASK 1 - PURPOSES
• Q2 – What are some of the broader purposes of music videos?
Think about some of the strategies employed by artists in their
videos and how they represent themselves, you could consider
where the artist is on a major label, independent label of
unsigned, is there a difference between them?
• The purposes of music videos are entertainment, Identity and
Sales.
• The much more recognized artists are the ones who are signed.
We might not know who the unsigned people are. The purpose
of a music video is to show their identity and brand.
7. TASK 1 - PURPOSES
• Q3 – Describe what is ‘synergy’ is and how it has been used in
music videos [min. 3 examples of synergy and convergence]
• The interaction or co-operation of two or more organizations,
substances or other agents to produce a combined effect
greater than the sum of their separate effect.
• E.g. (s) 1. The Rembrands- I’ll be there for you
• 2. Pharrell williams- Happy
• 3. https://www.music2spark.com/2011/10/12/synergy-in-music/
in a highschool band.
http://music--videos.weebly.com/purposes/synergy#
8. TASK 1 - PURPOSES
• Q4 – Branding; select an artist you like and look at how they present
themselves in their music videos. Explain what their ‘brand’ is, who is
appeals to and why they might have done this.
• Sam Smith presents themself as confident in ‘Dancing with a stranger’ by
strutting and dancing confidently. They also use visuals in the video to
engage their audience of all ages, as it doesn't matter who the person is.
• In the ‘How do you sleep?’ Video Sam Presents themself as quite sad at first
as they are getting to know themselves and the visual effect of the drag
from the chair really puts that into perspective for they’re audience. They
also add the perspective for people who has gone through the same thing
they had gone through. Then in the chorus Sam comes back as really
confident. This is because they strutted their stuff and this make their
audience empathise with them and makes the audience feel good about
themselves as well.
9. TASK 1 - PURPOSES
• Q5 – Compare One Direction and Animal Collective music
videos [find them on YouTube!], what can you discern about
each act from their videos? What is the main aim? Explain why.
• There are lots of differences between One Direction and Animal
Collective. One difference is that One Direction is much more
representational than the Animal Collective in their videos as 1D
shows that story line of their lyrics and the Animal Collective
doesn't show their characters, you do not know who is in the
AC.
• One Direction has more of a larger audience than Animal
Collective as 1D has been signed and AC has not been signed.
This shows that People, no matter what their opinion is, know
who 1D is. If you when and asked someone “who is Animal
Collective?” They might have no idea.
11. TASK 2 – STYLES, TECHNIQUES
AND CONVENTIONS
• Q1 – Describe and explain the use of camerawork in music
videos, i.e. the types of shot used with examples to illustrate
this.
• Close up shots can convey an artists emotions. If they are
moving and it is a close up shot, you can get a better idea of
how they are feeling. E.g. shows that the singer is confident as
they are dancing. This also depends on the mood of the set and
can create a more dynamic. As well as this, there are different
types of screens that people watch things on e.g. An iPhone
screen is tinier than an iPads.
12. TASK 2 – STYLES, TECHNIQUES
AND CONVENTIONS
• Q2 - Describe and explain the use of editing in music videos, i.e.
the types of shot used with examples to illustrate this.
• Rendering many images is very difficult for some people as there is
multiple viewing. There are videos that use slow pace and gentler
transitions to show the mood of a video. This is used by many
artists, particularly solo female artists, with broad audience appeal
such as Dido.
• What enhances editing are the digital effects, which play with the
original images to offer different viewing entertainment for their
audiences. This might take the form of split screens, colorisation or
a blockbuster film style CGI.
13. TASK 2 – STYLES, TECHNIQUES
AND CONVENTIONS
• Q3 - Describe and explain some of the technical developments in
music videos, i.e. the types of shot used with examples to illustrate
this.
• Andrew Goodwin writing ‘Dancing in the distraction factory’. This
was a book that was written in 1992. This offers and explains all the
different information when filming a music videos. However a lot
of things might have changed since 1992. It is 2019, it has been
twenty seven years. There has been development in Technology as
in 1992 there would have been only television to watch these on.
For example, We don’t have deep computers anymore we have
become more advanced in technology and now have laptops,
phones and other devices that originally come from a deep pan
computer.
14. TASK 2 – STYLES, TECHNIQUES
AND CONVENTIONS
• Q4 – Genre conventions; often music videos adhere to genre
conventions within their visual style and production techniques.
Select a recognizable genre and use illustrations to explain what
their genre conventions are…
• Music genre is definable by sound, structure and techniques.
Music videos follow and reinforce the brand values of the artists
songs/artists and place them within a genre. E.g. when you look
at apiece of music from a genre, you could easily tell what genre
it is from.
15. TASK 2 – STYLES, TECHNIQUES
AND CONVENTIONS
• Q5 - John Stuart’s description of the music video
“incorporating, raiding and reconstructing” is
essentially the essence of intertextuality [something
asserted by Andrew Goodwin]. Can you explain
what intertextuality is and find some examples of it
in music videos?
• Intertextuality is basically when an artist references
to something in their music videos, that others
have referenced to before. For example, (Shania
Twain) Man I feel like a woman (1999) referenced
to the earlier (Robert Palmer) Addicted to love
(1986). He probably referenced to someone else
before he made his music videos. Shania Twain
referenced to reverse gender roles.
1986
1999
17. TASK 3 – CASE STUDY
• For your individual case study you must study an artist or genre
of music, focusing on a minimum of 3 videos [ideally 5+ videos]
• This should provide discussion on the usage of the following:
– Style[s] & Techniques employed
– Intertextuality
– Camerawork/editing
– Genre conventions
– Critical approaches [you should be applying some of the critical
approaches from your lessons and some of your own, to your
selected videos]
18. TASK 3 – CASE STUDY
• You should include a video link for the video
• You can include as many illustrative stills as you like
• Be creative in your approach, it is suggested you use the
heading on the previous slide a guide on how to structure your
response to get you started
• Remember, make a point, use a specific part of the chosen
video as an example, explain yourself and then link to another
video where possible
• Compare and contrast your artist/genre to other artists/genres
• Remember to consider differing contexts
19. POP MUSIC.
• For my case studies I have decided to complete it on the genre
of pop music. I think some pop music has lots of information it.
Here are some characteristics:
• Pop songs are short for popular. So, they have to be popular.
• Pop songs are defined by their music patterns.
• They are defined by their techniques. E.g. Reverse reverb,
sidechain or gated snare.
• They have a specific style. E.g. rock, reggae, hip hop
20. THE BEATLES.
• The Beatles, who were formed (by Paul McCartney and John
Lennon) in 1957, consisted of Paul McCartney, John
Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
• They met as teenagers in Liverpool, England.
• They created some of the biggest 60’s and 70’s hits of all
time.
• Their music videos have been remastered and put on
YouTube, since YouTube was created (2005)
• They even had a movie called ‘Yellow Submarine’ made
about them and their music. This came out in 17th August
1968. This is what their videos have been remastered from.
• Their videos are full of the 60’s and 70’s style pop art. This
originated from the 50’s.
• The film was edited by Brian J. Bishop (Apple films, king
Features Syndicate and TVC London.)
• The only song that they recorded as a ‘live’ performance
was ‘Hey Jude’. It was not live on television as they were
making a music video for television instead.
21. THE BEATLES
TECHNIQUE AND STYLES
• The only song that they recorded as a ‘live’ performance was
‘Hey Jude’. It was not live on television as they were making a
music video for television instead. The technique they used is
they took 300 people, who were fans or people off the street
(that regularly hang out outside of Abby Road studios).
• Hey Jude- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_MjCqQoLLA&list=PL0jp-
uZ7a4g9FQWW5R_u0pz4yzV4RiOXu&index=3
• There is a lot of shots that are close ups of Paul McCartney (lead
vocals and Piano), and then later on in the video there are close
up shots of the rest of Beatles (John, Ringo and George). After
the main part of the song is finished the ‘Audience comes and
sits and sings “Na Na Na… na na na naaaa!”this adds the feel of
community of the fans that support the Beatles, as people of all
diversitys love the Beatles.
• The genre of their songs were mainly Pop rock But there was
one odd song called ‘Lucy in the sky with diamonds’ that was
psychedelic rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RoA0QTZ-bM (Lucy in
the sky with diamonds).
22. 1. ELEANOR RIGBY
THE BEATLES (1966)
• 2009 video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbxTlxuECJA
• 2016 remastered-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuS5NuXRb5Y
• There is a whole story behind Eleanor Rigby. Preformed by Paul
McCartney, who said that Eleanor Rigby was a fictional character
but Researchers did not believe him. Eleanor died aged 44 from
unknown…
• The music video of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ was remarstered from the
movie ‘Yellow Submarine’, It had a lot of pop art and loud colours
in it.
• I decided on this song because of the meaning behind it and the
history of the song is interesting to me
• There is actually a statue of Eleanor Rigby in liverpool. It is of her
sat on a bench. People can go and sit on the bench and sit next to
the statue. It is quite a beatiful commemeration of the song.
23. ELEANOR RIGBY
STYLES AND TECHNIQUES
• As I have said before, this clip is not an actual ’live’ video, it is
from the Beatles movie ‘Yellow Submarine’. (most of their
videos are as they are from the 60’s and we were not as advance
in technology.)
• There are some good techniques used in animation of the film
that this video was shot in. e.g. there must have been a lot of
pop art transferred to animation that was used.
• The video has brought a new concept with “its surreal ground
breaking visuals and also ushered in a new style of animation
helped by Terry Gillam's animations (who did the comedy series
of Monty Python).”
• Even though the Beatles were from Liverpool, the film was shot
in the USA.
24. ELEANOR RIGBY
TERRY GILLAM TRADEMARKS
• Terry Gillam is a writer and director and will always be remembered
for his contribution to Monty Python. In this sow he was not
heavily featured in the rest of the cast. Instead he found his niche as
the shows animator. He gave the show its unique, very British
newspaper/ Pop art animations. After this he became a fully
fledged movie director.
• He used these unique trademark of pop art animation on the
Beatles movie “ Yellow Submarine”. In the clip of ‘Eleanor Rigby’ he
had a lot of unique designs e.g. the yellow submarine (that is
referred to in every Beatles music video) being in Eleanor Rigby. He
made the animations look as though the “lonely People” were
panicking about ‘Eleanor Rigby’ as he animated them to look as
though they were moving back and forth. He may have done this in
other films.
25. ELEANOR RIGBY
INTERTEXTUALITY (MORE INFLUENCE)
• There is really not any evidence that the Beatles used
intertextuality in Eleanor Rigby but I found that researchers
thought that the Beatles used intertextuality in the song. You
can find this here-
http://www.paulj.myzen.co.uk/blog/teaching/reinventions/files/
2011/09/Strategic-Intertextuality-in-Lennon_s-Late-Beatles-
Songs.pdf
• What inspired Eleanor Rigby is Paul McCartney's childhood
memories of going into a graveyard to commemorate families
as a child, haunting him forever. He saw the grave of ‘Eleanor
Rigby’. This influenced him in a subconscious way.
• Nine years later, he wrote the lyrics as an adult. He states that
“Eleanor Rigby is a totally fictitious character that I made up”.
• These must have influenced him in someway to write this song.
26. ELEANOR RIGBY
GENRE CONVERSATION
• The actual genre of Eleanor Rigby is Pop Rock. But not the rock we
know today. It is more of a moody rock, it has no shouting within.
• The rest of the Beatles' songs are mostly rock, such as ‘A day in the
life’ and ‘Hey Jude’.
• Eleanor Rigby was part of an album that was called ‘Revolver’. It
came out in 1966. It was the genre of rock and one psychedelic
rock song.
• In comparison, there is an album that was called ‘SGT Peppers club
band’ which was full of wacky songs that they couldn’t express in
front of crowds.
• This album had psychedelic songs like ‘Lucy in the sky wit
diamonds’ and and art rock songs like ‘Within you Without you’.
27. THE BEATLES
CRITICAL APPROACHES
• From this I have learnt the older ways of making music videos, from
the 1960’s. Just extract them from their own film!
• I think that this music video is a good starting point and has lots of
references to the band's other songs and some foreshadowing at
the start.
• I like this as you can add some signs that first time viewers wouldn’t
notice and will become stunned by the amount of detail within.
• I don’t like the cartoon side of this music video. I only think this is
because of the technology they had in the 60’s though. It has
developed tremendously form then. I think they should have filmed
this like the one filmed music video of them.
28. 30 YEARS ON...
• The Beatles were no longer popular to the 1990’s, they have
done their time as popular music artists in the 1960’s.
• Even though, people still listen to them to this day, we have
moved on to a era of popular music that we all have listened to.
• Technology has changed dramatically. Music artists have now
started to record music videos that have messages within and
that also follow their music.
• This make the 1990’s more interesting to people.
The Spice Girls
29. MADONNA
• Madonna Louise Ciccone, who was known as ‘the queen of pop’
since the 1980’s, was born in August 1958. She is an American
Pop artist.
• She is known for pushing the boundaries of song writing in
mainstream pop music. She frequently “reinvents” her music.
• While doing this, she also uses powerful imagery in her music
videos and uses lots of references to things in the media that
she is passionate about.
• She is very much an inspiration to other musical artists, in her
time and in the modern day.
30. VOGUE
MADONNA (1990)
• Music video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuJQSAiODqI
• Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ was a great addition to popular music in 1990.
It was published as part of the album: I’m breathless, which was
inspired by the film: Dick Tracy.
• In the music video of the songs, it is recorded in a 20’s/30’s art
deco style room, with men and women dancing around her in
Vogue’s distinctive suits.
• This video is in black and white. It is because Madonna wanted a
style of the 1920’s and 30’s. She basically wanted the video to
seem old.
• She wanted to pay respect to Hollywood's Golden Age via Harlem's
"House Ball“ Vogueing.
• It also shows that Madonna was referencing the lyrics “it makes no
difference if you’re a boy or girl” making an all inclusive point that
she will not except anyone being sexist. As this was a big problem
31. VOGUE
STYLES AND TECHNIQUES
• As I have expressed before, Madonna wanted to make the
music video to vogue very 1920’s and 30’s art deco style. She
wanted to express the trend of mainstream popularity of dance
music and fashion. No matter of gender.
• She had more freedom of filming and recording in the 1990’s as
technology had changed since the 60’s. But there is a similarity
between the 60’s music videos (the Beatles ‘hey Jude’) and ‘
Vogue’... There were still close ups of Madonna and the dancers.
This is a good technique that artists have kept.
• There are differences to the music videos in the 60’s though.
The introduction of the video is longer and the camera shot of
the ‘models’ comes across as on a roll. It is like a scroll. This
might be to reference the catwalk as you see models walking
by.
32. VOGUE
STYLE AND TECHNIQUES
• There is also another good camera shot, when Madonna is
dancing and singing the chorus with the men in the suits. The
camera is zooming in on her but also moves shot to a man
modelling and looking around quite slow on a Greek pillar. I
think this is a good technique as It focuses more on the people
in the video and not just on the singer.
• Another style of the video is that Madonna wanted the whole
music video to be black and white. This makes the mood of the
music video more eye catching to its viewers and establishes
what modelling might feel like. E.g. fancy and glamourous. It
also makes it look older as it is meant to be set in the 1920/30’s.
33. VOGUE
INTERTEXTUALITY
• In most of Madonna’s songs there is intertextuality and one of
the references in this song is to the Vogue fashion magazine,
which is a well known brand and multinational brand.
• Also, the song references to several Hollywood stars that are
trying to embody the look and body of Marylin Monroe.
Therefore Madonna bases her style on Marylin such as the white
dress, hair, PERFECT skin and bright lips she is waring in the
video.
• Another intertextual reference is the style of the video. It is the
20’s and 30’s art deco, black and white style. This references to
the video director and the art history of the fashion industry.
This makes the whole video different to the others.
MarylinMonroe
Madonna
34. VOGUE
CAMERA WORK/EDITING
• The camera work in the video is very different to the 60’s as
technology has developed tremendously in 30 years. The
differences in recording has changed a lot. There are different
techniques of filming it as well. E.g. there is a shot at the beginning
as the camera is introduced to the music video that feels as if you
are looking at the models on the catwalk. It is smooth camera
work.
• The editing of this video, looked like you had to take a lot of shots
and put them together. I don’t actually know how they did edit in
the 90’s but I do know that it was recorded in Warner Brothers
Studios. Madonna was very efficient with the vocals, ‘rapidly
tracking all the verse and chorus vocals in order, in single takes.’
• In the video, I picked out (4:15) -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuJQSAiODqI there is some
special effects of fading, by this I mean (it looks like switching the
lights off and on) while a man is dancing slowly as he is modelling.
35. VOGUE
GENRE CONVERSATION
• The genre of this song is Disco Pop as most of Madonna’s
songs are. This was a Big genre of the 1990’s and up to the
2000’s.
• A nearly a decade before this songs release Madonna released
another song that has the same intertextuality and genre to it.
It was ‘Material Girl’- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p-
lDYPR2P8
• The genre of ‘Vogue’ is the same as ‘Material Girl’ as they both
have the same meaning behind them/ intertextuality. They are
both based on the singer/dancer/person Marylin Monroe.
Marylin Monroe was a big inspiration for most of Madonna’s
songs as well as the meanings behind her songs.
• Both of the audio tracks have bouncy/disco tunes to them and
would have been very popular in the 80’s and 90’s.
• But the music videos are quite different, but inspired by the
same person, which links them nicely. Such as ‘Vogue’ being
Black and white and ‘Material girl’ in colour as it was
36. VOGUE
CRITICAL APPROACHES
• There is a lot to unpack about Madonna's music video, ‘Vogue’
such as the digital editing, chorography and style of the music
video.
• I like the why that the video starts and ends with the fade of
feathers, as the music video is already in black and white and it
makes it more dramatic and gets the style across more for the
viewers. I may use this in my video.
• I also like the way that the dancers dance around Madonna as
they are all waring the same thing. It makes Madonna blend
into the dancers. As she stats in her lyrics “It makes no
difference if your Black or White, if you’re a Boy or a Girl!”
is making a point and illustrating it. I like this and may use this
technique also.
• There is not many points I do not like about this video, I would
just say the low light makes an impact on the style as it is meant
37. TWO DECADES LATER...
• We have evolved into all of the different styles of popular music,
whether that is Pop: rock, rap, disco or just pop. We all have a
unique sense of style of music.
• The technology has developed even more, now our modern
music videos have YouTube, TV and google to be uploaded to.
We even have flat screen tv’s now!
• There are varieties of popular music artists out there with
different pop genres...
Sam Smith
Tobi
Lou
Billie Eilish
38. BILLIE EILISH
• Billie Eilish is a 17 year old, American, pop artist. Her songs are
alternative.
• She conveys the news for people her age in her songs. E.g. could
show the news about climate change in the song: ‘all the good girls
go to hell’ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PZsSWwc9xA
• In her videos, she uses problems in the modern day world as an
inspiration for her songs. She uses a lot of imagery in her videos.
• She writes most of her songs from fictional perspectives, to show
her music videos as story telling. It is the primary aim for her. such
as, from the third person (Eleanor Rigby) or from the first person
(psycho Killer)
Album covers
39. BURY A FRIEND
BILLIE EILISH (2019)
• Video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUHC9tYz8ik
• In 2018, Billie Eilish wrote a song, with her brother (Finneas
O'Connell), called ‘Bury a friend’. The song came out in 2019.
• The song is meant to be sung in the perspective of a monster
under the bed. There are no monsters in the video, it is in fact
Billie herself.
• The music video itself is incredible and is a great addition to the
rest of her songs, which are also alternative.
• The genre of this song is Pop – synth/electronica. The synth
adds to the horror theme of the song and makes it very moody
for her audience.
40. BURY A FRIEND
STYLE AND TECHNIQUES
• The style of this song is dark and Billie wanted this song to be
like this because she drew something and that’s what gave her
and her brother the inspiration for the video. It is meant to be in
the perspective of a monster underneath somebody's bed but
that summarises the style a bit more. Video of explanation from
Billie- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvo_R9eKpVc
• The way she is manipulated by the ‘anonymous’ hands puts a
spin on things, as it is like ‘the monster’ is being manipulated
and put back into history. It is like she is the victim instead of
the criminal. (1:00-1:18)
• I also like the choreography of the video, especially the foot
work (1:00) and when she rises it make the style even creepier.
(1:52-2:00)
41. BURY A FRIEND
STYLE AND TECHNIQUES
• The techniques she may have used is her own phone for
recording peoples voices, saying her name at the start. “Billie”
(0:22)
• Also her own phone to record and edit into the video, the
dentists tool, you may hear it in the background. (1:28-1:30)
• The recording team edited these into the track and you
wouldn’t know that it was those noises.
• She would have had transitions of the camera as well, which
work quite well as they make it rough a criminal. (1:02-1:04) she
had a lot of these in the video. It is a really nice technique and I
may use it.
42. BURY A FRIEND
INTERTEXTUALITY
• She references death (the Bible) as she is like the devil as you go
further on in to the music video.
• Instrumentation is a hip hop beat at twenty beats per minute
(galloping) and is a reference to a rapper’s song... West’s Black
skinhead (2013) by Kanye West.
• Video BSH- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q604eed4ad0
43. BURY A FRIEND
CAMERA WORK/EDITING
• As I have said before, this video has a lot of the same transition
of coming violently down the screen (1:02-1:04). This add the
really well done effect of tension to the audience.
• I also like that the camera perspective changes at (2:23-2:38).
The camera has a complete 360 degree spin and this adds a
twisted effect. I might use this.
• When editing, they might of added more of a filter to the black
and white theme. Such as they would have played with the light
in each shot and it would have created the effect of the light
on/off effect throughout.
44. BURY A FRIEND
GENRE CONVERSATION
• The genre of this song is Pop-Synth/electronica. The synth adds
a creepy atmosphere to the piece. This makes it a horrifying
song for the audience.
• Most of Billie’s songs are Popular songs but some are quite
different to others. E.g. ‘all the good girls go to hell’ is
alternative/ indie pop -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-
PZsSWwc9xA and compared to ‘Party Favor’ which is Indie pop-
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGHTOVw6F4Q
Bury a Friend’s genre stood out to me as a bit different to all the
other songs she has done so far.
45. BURY A FRIEND
CRITICAL APPROACHES
• If I was to complete this song for my music video, I would have to
fit the genre of the song. This is why I like it as I can practically
mess around with the lighting in the room I am in. Like in the video
of the song where throughout the video the lights are constantly
flickering.
• I like the chorography of the foot work, as I feel like I have a
creative way to do that.
• I don’t like the needle scene where her back is being injected (to
make the monster go). Mostly because it makes me cringe, I would
cut that out.
• I like this music video because of all the different perspectives on
the camera and the monster. Such as she is under the bed, then she
is in a hallway and then the transitions come.
46. CONCLUSION
This is the end of the journey for the 3 examples that I have given
for my case study.
I like the Billie Eilish song ‘Bury a friend’ video, it gave me some
good ideas for my actual video. Such as camera transitions and
lighting etc.
