13. My 101 Quilt Project
Why 101 Quilts?
The San Francisco Quilters Guild requested quilts for premature babies at Kaiser
Hospital in San Francisco. Making a few small quilt tops was so quick and so
satisfying that it quickly led me to challenge myself: I'd make 100 premie-size quilt
tops (about 24” x 24”) and see where the process led me. 400 days later, the
project was completed. (+ one. I guess I can't count!) About half of these quilts are
being quilted by other guild members and will go to the babies. Some of the others
were exhibited in Beyond the Bed. The rest will be available at
www.joy-lily.com/101quilts.htm as I finish quilting them.
25. Red Eye to New York
A traditional quilt block called
New York Beauties (the Statue of
Liberty’s crown) was used to create
the sun rays. It is the inspiration
for this quilt’s title.

34. Zenana
Inspired by visiting palaces
in India where women used to be
sequestered in “zenanas” with
access to sunshine only through
concealing metal grills.
The back of this quilt has
one giant window.
