case. Carbolic Smoke Balls were a quackery cure for the
flu back in 1891 when Britain was towards the end of a
pandemic that killed almost a million people globally.
You had to put a tube up your nose and connect it to a
rubber ball that contained carbolic acid, which would
make your nose run.

contracted the illness. The Carbolic Smoke Ball Co.
advertised that it would pay a £100 reward to anyone
who developed one of the increasingly common
