Introduction
Nowadays there isn’t anybody able to say: I never met an outsider. Somebody
would say this is a live proof that actually the World is no longer the patchwork it was
formerly.
As a matter of fact, if we had the opportunity to recede to the beginning of last
century surely we would see a world absolutely different, where travelling between
different nations was almost impossible and the concept of multiculturalism wasn’t
part of the humankind dictionary. However, the twenty century changed our world in a
whole way.
During the last century, dictatorships governments collapsed and the nations
embraced democratic systems were the ideals of equality and freedom stopped being
uniquely abstract become reality when it became part of the modern constitutions’
texts.
Besides, the sovereigns of the fragmented Europe of the post-war period made
everything on their reach in order to start the construction of a modest puzzle with
just six pieces baptized EEC and gradually with the joining of states of the Eastern and
Southern Europe this union has been expanding and some decades ago this colligation
of states become the modern European Union.
With the foundation of the European Union, the circulation of people and
goods become such an important point of issue for all the member-states that some of
them sign the Schengen Agreement so that they could encourage foreign investors to
establish residence on those countries and invest their cash there and also promote
the exchange of people, knowledge and merchandises.
It’s obvious that the Schengen Agreement allowed the collapsing of the
signatories’ borders and increased the cooperation among them but it also opened the
door to mass flocks of population not only from Europe but also from Africa, Middle
East and Southern America.
Further, it is important to think about How Can Immigrants Jeopardize the Host
Countries?

The Western World as a delightful meal for those who are famished
The North America and Europe, ordinarily recognized as the West, are an easy
target to desperate people namely people that born in countries where are happening
social and political riots and civil wars between extremist factions; people from very
poor countries without economic capability to ensure the subsistence of all
population; people that are suffer persecutions by the fascist chiefs etc.
But why they choose crossing Western boundaries instead entry in other
countries?
The answer to the question is peremptory; immigrants prefer western
countries because they have better living conditions, a high level of industrialization
and modernization, a high level of development, appropriate access to basic health
care services and also have a proper and effective education system.
Concerning the better lifestyle no one misdoubt that Occident has enhanced
living conditions and the reason is quite simple: these countries workers have a
stabilized economic condition possible as a direct consequence of an equilibrated
balance of trade, which means that the amount of importations doesn’t surpass the
exportations’ level. These countries excuse increasing taxes because they don’t have to
arrange their house and put things in the right place.
The true is that Western Countries congregate all the necessary conditions to
stimulate economy and in other hand they have an unemployment rate that doesn’t
trespass tolerable limits. Therefore, they can offer satisfactory wages to worker, an
indispensable requirement to become a target of foreign people.
Regarding the industrial and modernization dominance, the Western Countries
started taking advantage during the Industrial Revolution, which happened on the
beginning of the eighteen century in England with the invention of the steam machine
by James Watt. Thenceforth Western states like England, US, Germany and France had
become formally potencies that had detained the Industrial Supremacy around the
world. Posteriorly, Japan and China took their seat in the big kids table in terms of
industrial and economic power.
In terms of access to basic health care services and to education, according to
the CIA World Factbook, US and EU are the regions that spend investing on education
and technological development. Consequently they Europe and America are the

regions with the highest rates of alphabetization, with the largest medium life
expectancy, and with one of the lowest child mortality rate.
The confluence of all these factors made these regions authentic desserts to
people from precarious countries.
The diaspora of Chinese, Jews and Muslims

According to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, diaspora means the
movement of people from any nation or group away from their own country
Regarding the Jewish Diaspora, its story begins in the year 587 B.C.E, when
Judea was conquered by the Babylonians. Thenceforth, significant amounts of Jews
have lived in the Diaspora, many expressing longing to return to the Land of Israel.
The history of Jewish dispersion has led to the outstanding diversity of the
Jewish people, who have settled in countries as disparate as Morocco, Cuba, France,
and Australia. There were in 2010 about 13.6 million Jews in the world: more than 8
million spread around the world, with the remaining more than 5 million in Israel.
The Jewish community faces demographic challenges from factors such as the
aging of the Jewish population, increased rates of intermarriage, declining rates of
conversion to Judaism, and a relatively low percentage of children of mixed marriages
identifying themselves as Jewish. These factors are offset in part by immigration,
mainly from the former Soviet Union. Numerous European Jewish communities also
face growing anti-Semitism, including bombings and vandalism.
In past, especially during the Discovery Age, Jews had a preponderant role in
economy because they had financed some expeditions and contributed to the
development and to the economy strength of many nations like the Netherlands.
Regarding the Muslim Diaspora, the true is that although the numbers of
Muslims in Europe are growing, they remain a small minority. In 2010 there were
some 20 million Muslims in the European Union, about 4% of the total population.
EnglishFinal Work - West as a Delightful Dessert to FamishedPeople
Agrupamento de Escolas de Arouca 12|13 Page 7 of 10
Muslims as members of ethnic diasporas share certain beliefs and practices, and these
are lived out in diverse national, social and cultural contexts. And Islam is certainly a
global religion and Muslims spread around the world are aware they are part of a
global community. This feeling is strengthened for some by the marginalisation,
hostility and discrimination that they believe Muslims are now subject to, particularly
in the West, which trough the Mass Media classifies them as extremists because of
the 11th September treat.
Considering the Chinese Diaspora, it is long established in many countries.
According the CIA Word FactBook it is estimated that there are now at least half a
million Chinese living in Africa, 3.3 million in the US and 10 thousands in Portugal.
The overseas Chinese enjoy an extremely strong sense of shared identity as
well as a powerful connection with their homeland.
Would be imprudent doesn’t give emphasis to the fact that these Chinese
immigrants have played a crucial role in China's economic growth. However, until
recently, China tended to look down on those who had fled. This situation started
changing whit the implementation of a lot of reforms elaborated in order to approach
immigrants to the traditional values and customs of China.
EnglishFinal Work - West as a Delightful Dessert to FamishedPeople
Agrupamento de Escolas de Arouca 12|13 Page 8 of 10
The Chinese diaspora is particularly distinct from the Muslim and Jewish Ones
in three matters: first of all, the Chinese community is numerically larger and it is
spread all around the world; immigrants enjoy an unusually strong identification with
their homeland; in the other hand, China is already one of the strongest economies.
The fixation of Chinese communities in many Occidental Countries contributed
to a rising in the unemployment rate and the shutdown of many industries and shops
as direct consequence of the disloyal competition between Portuguese storekeepers
and the Chinese ones because of the fact of the products sold on the last stores being
cheaper than those who are made in Portugal. But why ? Because manpower in China
is cheaper than in Portugal and so products are fabricated by a lower price.
Anti-immigrationmeasures

Agrupamento de Escolas de Arouca 12|13 Page 9 of 10
Plunged in a deep crisis context, the Western Countries are adopting radical
measures expecting they can recover the economic status they had in the past.
Between these measures are cuts in public expenses, increases in tax rates and policies
to prevent the recession such as restrictions concerning immigration.
Germany is a very well-known country regarding immigration issues. Almost
since the Industrial Revolution, Germany adopted various measures in order to
preserve their economy integrity from foreign competition namely from competition
by Eastern companies.
Germany began restraining the entry of foreign capital and people and the
tendency is to more countries follow its way. I say this because the huge flock of
population from poor countries to rich ones is becoming a rambunctious situation and
before it takes catastrophic dimensions we have to act.
To struggle immigration, we have to consider measures like not conceding
green cards to foreign people and increasing the taxes over imported goods at least
until the end of the crisis.
Conclusion

As I said before, the collapsing of the signatories’ borders opened the door to
mass flocks of population not only from Europe but also from Africa, Middle East and
Southern America. Therefore, it’s relevant to reflect about How Can Immigrants
Jeopardize the Host Countries?
The Western Countries are an easy target to desperate people because they
have better living conditions, a high level of industrialization and modernization, a high
level of development, appropriate access to basic health care services and also have a
proper and effective education system.
The confluence of all these factors made these regions authentic desserts to
people from precarious countries.
For the host societies, migration usually pushed the boundaries of tolerance,
forcing communities to consider how much different people from distinct background
and carried with different ideas they can tolerant and what rights they would extend
to the newcomers.
First of all, we have to eradicate myths in order to ensure finish with myths and
stereotypes that sometimes are excuses to marginalize and exert violence upon
immigrants. Beyond this, it’s absolutely indispensable taking measures and adopting
policies in order to control the people flocks and the social resurgences that may result
as a direct consequence of these flocks.
For finish, I would like to say that in my perspective, politicians should mind
their attitudes and start putting emphasis on minorities’ living conditions inside their
boards making laws to protect not only the migrants but also the non-migrants and
ensure a peaceful atmosphere.
