Royal Wedding Special Feature
April 29 2011 was a memorable day
for our staff
...andExponential-e
And why was that? Because around 110 million fans of the British Royal Family – as
well as some of the world’s best known broadcasters – had Exponential-e’s cutting-edge
HDTV IP broadcast platform to thank for the spectacular footage of the wedding of HRH
Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
CBS News and Bell
Media Canada – as well
as two other leading US
broadcasters – chose
Exponential-e to beam
continuous feeds of live
coverage of the much
heralded event across
North and South America.
Exponential-e provided
direct 10Gb links in New
York and access to its
London metro network.
The world’s media was
based at media villages at
Westminster Central Hall
and Buckingham Palace
from where they broadcast
the events leading up to
the wedding, and the day
itself, to millions of viewers
worldwide.
Our layer 2 IP network
enabled the broadcasters
to feed multiple channels
from all their locations and
benefit from a converged
solution in the form of
SIP trunking and secure
Internet to support this
event.
Exponential-e’s high-
throughput broadcast
network supports ASI,
SDI and HD-SDI. High-
definition, low-latency, low-
jitter connectivity makes it
possible to support a range
of dedicated customer
services on the same
underlying infrastructure –
and to distribute services
across a number of
locations.

Albert Faust, Bell Media’s
Senior Director in Media
Technology Systems, said:
“Exponential-e connected
our outside broadcast
sites to our news bureau

great was their ability to
give us Internet access –
as well as 30 channels of
voice as part of the same
solution.
“We are experts in covering
major world events but
having a proactive and
responsive partner like
Exponential-e makes life a
whole lot easier.”

It was this high level of
“service-awareness” that
helped Exponential-e
secure the custom of some
of the world’s largest
broadcasters – and we are
delighted they’ve been
kind enough to publicly
endorse our high level of
service.”
‘service-aware’ – which
means each type of traffic
can be securely separated
and given its own
performance guarantees.
This makes it ideal for
getting the necessary ICT
on-location to support live
events.

Mr Bavisi added:
“Exponential-e is recognised
for providing the solid
foundation required for

can be no better accolade
than being associated with
something as prestigious as
the Royal Wedding.”
3. The story now is very different.
We’ve grown at an amazing rate
to almost 200 employees and
have established a prestigious
list of clients numbering around
1,000. We are continually
smashing sales targets and
gaining new admirers for our
innovativeapproachtoourwork.
At the core of our success is our
commitment to adhering to our
founding principles of Applied
Innovation and Dynamic
Disruption. By staying true to
these origins we have established
a brand that is built on the
strongest foundations – a brand
that combines groundbreaking
technological excellence with the
best possible customer service.
Those same key drivers are
coming to the fore again now as
we carefully plot the next chapter
of Exponential-e’s development
– Exponential-e 2.0.
So what is Exponential-e 2.0? It
will be the culmination of our
carefully structured three year
transitionary phase during
which we evolve from a fixed
line operator (1.0 model) to an
ICT/Systems Integrator (the 2.0
version).
Exponential-e 1.0 came to an
end last year. It was an eight year
success story – it saw the
creation of an industry thought
leader that created scores of
copycat competitors along the
way.WearenowatExponential-e
1.5 stage – a phase that will run
into our 10th anniversary year
andseeallourbusinesssolutions
eventually housed under one
“cloud” umbrella.
As a total technology enabler
we will be embracing new
technologies to transition the
company and raise the bar of
Applied Innovation in the
“cloud” space. Again, true to our
founding principles we won’t be
following the pack. We’ll be
different from most of our
competitors – most of whom
will be either network providers
or cloud specialists. This
differentiation was recently
demonstrated at the flagship
Smart Wired Cloud Seminar,
hosted by Exponential-e in
London in July.
We intend to lead the way with
our new Smart Services
underpinned by Smart Wires®
and VMware that complements
our VPLS architecture and
infrastructure investments.
It is important to stress that we
were a thought leader on cloud
solutions, Smart Wires® and
Next Generation Networks as
long ago as 2006 so we have
long been prepared for the
current “noise” surrounding
the cloud.
We let our track record speak
for itself but we think there are
some very compelling reasons
for engaging with Exponential-e,
not least our market-leading
bespoke and complete network
solutions, with versatility at
both layer 2 and 3. We are also
the only company in the world
that can offer Application
Performance Management as a
cloud service – and the only
company that can offer multiple
services on one pipe securely at
layer 2. Last but not least we
offer outstanding customer
service in the context of a
trusted partnership.
Back to the present– 2011 has
been a very successful year
with our talented staff working
incredibly hard to record some
amazing results in the first six
months. Both May and June
saw monthly sales records
achieved and, among other
records gained, we secured
our biggest ever single deal in
the second quarter.
Individuals across all sales areas
are beating personal bests and
setting record achievements
against targets. Individual
‘super-performances’ are being
seen across all areas of the
business and it is the way in
which all of our teams are
pulling together and, most
importantly, delivering together
that has made this year a
storming success to date.
All of these collaborative
efforts have concurred with
the “call to arms” at the start
of the year – L’Esprit de Corps
that I asked colleagues to rise
to. I said then that this would
assist us to make the transition
from Exponential-e 1.0 to 2.0
– and it’s working! We are
making good progress with
this transition and a year from
now, that progress will be far
more advanced and tangible.
We owe a huge thanks to all
our staff for joining in with the
spirit of dedication to a
common goal. And, of course,
we must send out our sincere
thanks and best wishes to all
our valued customers who
have made this enjoyable and
rewarding journey possible.

Next year Exponential-e will mark a key milestone in its
history when it celebrates its 10th anniversary. And what
an exciting journey it has been since those early days back
in 2002 when we launched with just eight employees.

The network is configured with three separate VPLS
instances: Video, WAN, and Internet for connectivity

virtualisation project.
Previously BIG had been running a legacy layer 3 routed

Congratulations are in order to Managing Director Mukesh
Bavisi who has been named for the second year running in a
coveted under-40 young leaders’ report unveiled by leading
telecommunications magazine, Global Telecoms Business.
The list includes major telco executives born on or after July 1,
1971. Aside from Mukesh, the impressive line-up includes figures
from international majors such as Orange and Alcatel-Lucent.
The list was compiled after the magazine asked its readers to help
identify the most inspirational figures in the industry over the
next few years.
As a co-founder of Exponential-e, Mukesh wins praise from the
magazine for being a leading light in transforming corporate
networking and business VPNs in the UK.
The listing describes Mukesh as a pioneer in his field – and
as a thought leader who ignores the path followed by other
service providers.

Exponential-e is meeting
the Internet addressing
challenge head-on by
making sure its network
is ready for both IPv4 and
IPv6 schemes.
As part of our drive
towards the IPv6 switch we
also participated in World
IPv6 Day, which was hosted
by The Internet Society
(ISOC) on June 8. This
was a 24-hour trial period
where a range of network
and content providers,
such as Facebook and
Google, provided content
from sites based on both
IPv4 and IPv6 addressing.
The event’s main goal was
to encourage organisations
to prepare their services
for IPv6 to ensure
successful transition as
IPv4 addresses run out.
Exponential-e, which builds
its portfolio from a Layer 2
core network capable of
supporting any protocol,
has had plans in place for
IPv6 for some time, with a
range of services on offer
to ensure all existing and
future customers make the
right moves.
Our IPv6 enabled core has
been successfully tested
and has been trialled with
customers. We have also
been supporting the IETF
(Internet Engineering Task
Force) end-to-end principle
by deploying IPv4 and IPv6
in tandem – known as
“dual stack”- throughout
our network.
Exponential-e has also been
awarded four stars of IPv6
readiness by RIPE NCC (the
European Regional Internet
Registry). This means – out
of 6748 European service
providers – it is among the
top eight per cent ready to
connect customers to the
whole Internet when IPv4
runs out.
Expert consultancy, workshops
and various events have
also been laid on to keep
customers abreast of all the
changes – and help them with
their own migrations.
Exponential-e Seniorfhdrhde
Consultant Engineer Dan
Young said: “We have been
rolling out a dual-stack
approach across the
network as we believe
this is the only way of
delivering the high level
of performance, user
experience and reliability
our customers expect. Dual
IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity
will become a standard
feature of all Exponential-e
business Internet services
this autumn.
“Whilst we will take steps to
ensure that our own supply
of IPv4 addresses lasts as
long as possible, eventually,
like everyone else, we
will run out. With careful
planning, however, we will
be assigning IPv4 space for
as long as we can.”
From then Exponential-e will
be issuing new customers
with IPv6 addresses. We
have been testing options
for transitional technology
– including Carrier Grade
NAT – which will allow it to
maintain connectivity to the
IPv4-only Internet for new
customers.
Mr Young added: “The
Internet economy is worth
£100bn in the UK alone.
While the switch to IPv6
poses challenges, there are
also great opportunities
for those that adopt it
in good time in terms of
providing a competitive
boost in sales, perception
and potential improved
technical performance.”

Exponential-e has used pioneering technology to build
a “smart wired cloud” for leading financial services
provider Close Asset Management (CAM).
The virtualised environment supports CAM’s initiatives to broaden
the company’s appeal to its clients, especially those private investors
who have become more used to technology-based management of
their investments.
CAM offers financial services for private individuals, institutional
clients and their advisers. The company offers a wide range of
investment management, trust, banking and advisory, educational
and administrative services in the UK and overseas.
Exponential-e has built a hybrid cloud for CAM, integrating a new
public facing website with their existing private cloud it created
for the company a few years before. As the data and applications
being supported are of a sensitive nature, the public cloud service
is securely housed within a controlled and protected data centre
and integrated into CAM’s internal systems over Exponential-e’s
Smart Wires®.
Exponential-e used virtualisation to reduce the number of
physical servers needed by two-thirds and to reduce the
associated systems by 80 per cent. They were able to keep
hardwaretoaminimumandremovetheneedforpower,cooling,
rack space and support costs associated with multiple machines.
CAM’s live and pre-production environments take advantage of
virtualisedICTresourcesdeliveredfromthecloud.Disaster-recovery
backup is provided from a second Exponential-e data centre from
where the live environment is replicated across the cloud. Two
firewalls work across the environment to provide the protections
neededandSANstorageissharedacrossthedatabaseclusters.
Exponential-e have integrated the new computing
environment into CAM’s existing systems, allowing the
company’s internal support teams controlled and secure
access to the system.
Exponential-e’s Managing Director Mukesh Bavisi said: “This
private cloud gives CAM access to additional computing
power which they can flex as they need. It is also a gateway to
other on-demand services contained within the cloud.”
FACTFILE
• Exponential-e’s Smart Wires® offer
the versatility demanded of today’s
businesses living in a dynamic, fast
moving global economy from
cloud-based SaaS, algorithmic/high
frequency trading and high definition

cancer support charity.
Its main focus is to reach
and improve the lives
of everyone living with
cancer by providing
practical, clinical and
financial support and
through campaigning for
better cancer care.
Macmillan’s existing

near to full capacity and
unable to support the
range of applications they
required. Bandwidth was

“The Wellcome Trust
looked for a higher

After discussions with
Exponential-e, we have
adopted the A3

layer 2 virtual cloud
delivers superior
flexibility, scalability and

One feature of the new
network is the ability for
Macmillan to flex its call-

the three sites in line with
changing staff numbers at
each location.
Macmillan was eager
to reduce its reliance

Exponential-e connects to
BME’s London hubs
BME – the Spanish Exchange – announced recently that Exponential-e
had been chosen to provide connectivity to its two London hubs.
BME, which stands for Bolsas y Mercados Españoles, is the operator
of all stock markets and financial systems in Spain. Through its IT
subsidiary, Visual Trader, it opened two access points last year in the
capital.
These two gateways allow market participants located in London
to access BME’s markets cost-effectively and easily, as the gateway
provides connectivity between London and Madrid. Optimisation
of the route has reduced one-way latency to approximately 14
milliseconds.
Exponential-e’s financial network is optimised for high-frequency
trading. It connects directly into key Exchanges, ECNs, Brokers and
trading platforms. Exponential-e’s presence in both data centres
in which BME hubs are located, allows Exponential-e’s customers
to interconnect to BME with a simple cross-connect. Additionally,
last-mile connectivity between the customer premises and
Exponential-e PoPs is offered at low cost.
Exponential-e Chief Executive Lee Wade said: “Our partnership
with BME is great news. It will enable fast, low latency access to the
Spanish Financial Exchanges across Exponential-e’s network, which
is optimised for financial trading customers.”
