Main responsibilitiesandduties:
For a continuousperiodof almost30 years,I have workedasa researchtechnicianandlaboratory
managerfor researchteamsintwo Universitydepartments.Thishasprovidedme withavery
diverse setof skills, andconsiderable individual responsibility, withthe maindutiesIhave performed
summarisedbelow:
Providingtechnical supporttoa large University researchgroup consistingof 2 academicstaff,4-6
researchfellows,3-5postgraduate researchstudents,andmanyundergraduatestudents.
Maintainingandservicingall the researchfacilitiesin workingcondition,includingregulartestingof
electrical equipment,servicingmechanical devices. Checkingall equipmentandmakingrepairs
where possible,orliaisingwithrelevantcompaniestodeal withandrepairproblematicmajor
equipment. Use of precisiontestingequipmentinfaultdiagnosis,safetychecks,calibrationand
servicing/PATtestingof equipmentevery18 monthsor at intervalslaiddownbythe Departmental
SafetyCommittee.
Maintainingall computers(over20PCs,3 Linux workstations,datastorage and serverRAIDarrays),
withresponsibilityforregular testingandmonitoringall systems, errordiagnostics, orderingand
2. replacingparts (HDDs,graphics,memoryetc.) as required. Updating existingsoftware, installing
newsoftware, maintaininglicencesetc.
Manninga small mechanical andelectrical workshop,providingin-house repairs,small equipment
modifications, buildingelectronicdevicestoexistingdesigns. Construction,andrunningof electronic
and mechanical apparatusforthe variousresearchprojects,modifying/improvingapparatusasand
whenneeded.
Estimatingthe forwardrequirementsof materials,components,standardequipmentand
responsible forensuringtheiravailability foruse inthe lab.Orderingof new apparatus,instruments
and equipmentasnecessary.Ordering/Maintainingadequate stocklevelsof all research
items/consumablesusedinthe lab.
Construction,maintenance anduse of Purchase Orderdatabase usingCardbox v3.0.Maintaining
recordsof orders,placingall newequipmentorders,andresponsibilityforselectionandpurchase of
smallerequipmentandspares.
Additional previous responsibilities:
Seniormemberof departmental classteachingteam, providingsupportforacademicsleadingthe
classes(NeurophysiologyandCardiovascularPhysiology) andprovidingbasictuition andassistance
to the students.Responsible forsettingup/organising/runningthe classes,inconjunctionwithother

availability.Givingadvice on/ororderingof new apparatus,instrumentsandequipmentforclass

Caringfor laboratoryanimals involvedinthe researchproject.Settingup/runningapparatususedin
theirtrainingandthe research experiments.Maintaininghighstandardsof hygieneinthe animal
experimental room.Settingupforandassistingin surgery;alsopreparationandpost-operativecare

Computing skills:
Extensive knowledgeof DOS& Windowsoperatingsystems,networking,software/hardware
maintenance andinstallation.Providingoperationssupport/advisoryandhardware
maintenance/backupforresearchlaboratorycomputersystem. Workingknowledgeof Apple OS
(installationandsoftware install). Some knowledgeof Unix systems(CentOS,Debian).
Strongworkingknowledgeof all versionsof MS Office,andCorel software (WordPerfect,DRAW,
PaintShopPro).Extensive use of otherdrawing/3Dpackages,esp.SmithMicroPoserProusedinthe
preparationof diagrams,graphsetcfor lecturesandresearchreports.
