2. EARLY EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
1982 – 1990
After graduation, I worked for a small entrepreneurial outfit, launching franchise packages and generating
ideas for business opportunities. I opened a restaurant in Brighton and also worked freelance in music
publishing. Later, I worked in company car fleet management, becoming successful in that field and gaining
experience in computing and business negotiations.
INTERESTS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Teaching is a strong vocation. I am interested in all aspects of education, especially the ‘hidden curriculum’,
relating to individual and moral development, but also the broad curriculum, Arts and Sciences, and creativity
in general. I have been described as ‘a man for all seasons’.
I have twenty-five years of teaching experience, in which I have not only been able to develop and share my
twin passions of science and music but also to be active in extra-curricular activities; I love sport and have
considerable coaching experience.
In the field of music I enjoy conducting, composing and arranging and I have conducted choirs and orchestras
in the top venues in Kazakhstan, including the State Opera House in Astana and the State Philharmonic Hall in
Almaty. I currently direct the Astana International Community Choir. In Britain, I sang in the Royal Choral
Society and also taught oboe and bassoon for many years. I am married to a concert pianist and we work
closely, preparing for concerts and events.
My background and impeccable English led to my involvement, from its inception in 2013, with the international
festival and competition Astana Piano Passion. As moderator of the international jury, I also presented the
competition on national TV networks and live on-line broadcasts around the world, gave press conferences
and, working with my wife, provided translations of scripts and information for publications.
I have always enjoyed cooking, often working as a chef during the long summer school holidays. There is a
demand for excellent British food in Astana and, from time to time, I ‘guest’ as Head Chef in the Radisson
Hotel, where my cooking attracts large numbers of diners, it is fair to say.
During the years I lived in Gloucestershire, I was captain of Lechlade Cricket Club. Among other sporting
interests, I enjoy football, rugby, swimming, climbing and hillwalking. In 1997, I walked, solo, the length of
Britain from Land’s End to John o’Groats to raise money for Cancer Research, and wrote a book about the
adventure. I have two grown up daughters, by a previous marriage.
