Charitable Giving Through the
Generations
A 2018 report on philanthropy found that the
younger generations are the most generous
when it comes to charitable giving. Millennials
donated a significant percentage of the total
amount given to charities, according to a repre-
sentative survey of 1,000 people.
The Millennial Generation
Almost a third (30%) of all monies donated to
charity in 2017 came from people born be-
tween 1981 and 1995, or the millennial genera-
tion. This represents approximately £2.7 billion
donated by 11 million people for worthy causes.
Generation Z
Those belonging to Generation Z were found
to be almost as generous, with £2.2 billion do-
nated by more than 8 million people born after
1996. More than 4,800 individual charities ben-
efitted from this generosity.
Baby Boomers
The generation known as baby boomers, which
represents people born between 1946 and
1964, donated £2.3 billion to charity in 2017
with 9.9 million donors. A further £2 billion was
donated by five million mature donors (those
born before 1946).
