Concerns And Trends Architects Should
Pay Attention To In The Coming Years

Experts in the field of architecture anticipate a more usefulness-
centered future, less about flashy, “starchitect” outlandish designs
and more about function. This move is more akin to strategic
partnering; the emphasis will shift toward opportunities presented
when people gather on public spaces.

Indeed, architecture in the late 2010s is leaning toward what people
actually need rather than who designed it. It’s going to likewise be
more collaborative; and not just among other architects, but with
other industries, from the typical interior designers to
environmental scientists and social anthropologists.
One big reason is that millennials are preferring more meaningful
common spaces that are likewise sustainable. In fact, the growing
consciousness of sustainability concerns is shifting the focus of
architects to other materials. New experimentations with more
traditional methods like using dirt mixtures should even lead to
buildings made of mud.
Finally, the architecture of the coming decade will more clearly blur
the line between public and private space. Buildings will be seen
more as not just beneficial to its clients and inhabitants but to the
neighborhood as a whole. This follows multi-functional trends in
real estate, where we can have various amenities under one roof,
from clinics and gyms to groceries and indoor gardens.

I’m John Eilermann, a St. Louis-based architecture student.
Architecture is both a passion and never-ending dream for me. I like
that it’s important in society while still giving space for artists. More
of my writings on the subject here.
