Standard I:Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
Element Ia. Teachers lead in their classrooms.
Teachers demonstrate leadership by taking responsibility for the progress of all students to ensure that they graduate from high school, are globally
competitive for work and postsecondary education, and are prepared for life in the 21st century. Teachers communicate this vision to their students.
Using a variety of data sources, they organize, plan, and set goals that meet the needs of the individual student and the class. Teachers use various

Ferguson, Ann Marie: Mr. Finley is a highly trained educator who effectively and consistently demonstrates leadership in the classroom by differentiating
his instruction based upon the academic proficiency of his students. He recognizes the value of modifying his assignments as they apply to native
speaking Spanish students and those who are not native speakers. By designing his lessons in a non-threatening, inclusive manner, students are
willing to actively participate and he is able to support quality learning products. Mr. Finley is purposefully preparing his students for Spanish 2 by
designing lessons that will help students master the Spanish language. He collaborates with the French teacher to identify specific challenges that must
be overcome to make sure students are able to master the content. He supports the School Improvement Plan by addressing student learning gaps
and facilitating specific literacy strategies that will support all level of learner. For growth, it is recommended that Mr. Finley continue to support students'
leadership in the classroom through collaborative lesson design that will challenge the native Spanish speakers to support others to become proficient
in Spanish.

Comments
Ferguson, Ann Marie: Today's lesson required students to demonstrate mastery of Spanish vocabulary through collaborative creation of a video with a
partner or group of three students. They were provided the assignment, the rubric, and examples of scenarios that would be appropriate for this
assignment. Students demonstrated their ability to synthesize the language and extend their learning through a measurable learning task. Mr. Finley
provided additional online resources for students' reference and then allowed time for them to be creative as they articulated their video design to each
other. This lesson demonstrated Mr. Finley's ability to allow students to take responsibility for their own learning and it also provided evidence of
differentiated expectations, by allowing students to select their own group, video topic, and then prepare the script that would best reflect their individual
language proficiency. Mr. Finley is a national board certified teacher that provides students Spanish I coursework that will earn them a high school
credit, as well as prepare them for Spanish II next year. He is an education professional that continuously communicates high expectations for his
students and they respond positively by producing quality, measurable products. For growth, it is recommended that Mr. Finley extend students mastery
of the content by allowing them to design the rubric and topic for an instructional video to support struggling students' language mastery. He would also
collaborate with to students to create students' self-assessments and assessments of other students' skill level.

By designing his lessons in a non-threatening, inclusive manner, students are willing to actively participate and he is able to support quality learning products. Mr. Finley is purposefully preparing his students for Spanish 2 by designing lessons that will help students master the Spanish language. He collaborates with the French teacher to identify specific challenges that must be overcome to make sure students are able to master the content. He supports the School Improvement Plan by addressing student learning gaps and facilitating specific literacy strategies that will support all level of learner. Comments Ferguson, Ann Marie: Today's lesson required students to demonstrate mastery of Spanish vocabulary through collaborative creation of a video with a partner or group of three students. They were provided the assignment, the rubric, and examples of scenarios that would be appropriate for this assignment. Students demonstrated their ability to synthesize the language and extend their learning through a measurable learning task. Mr. Finley provided additional online resources for students' reference and then allowed time for them to be creative as they articulated their video design to each other. This lesson demonstrated Mr. Finley's ability to allow students to take responsibility for their own learning and it also provided evidence of differentiated expectations, by allowing students to select their own group, video topic, and then prepare the script that would best reflect their individual language proficiency. Mr. Finley is a national board certified teacher that provides students Spanish I coursework that will earn them a high school credit, as well as prepare them for Spanish II next year. He is an education professional that continuously communicates high expectations for his students and they respond positively by producing quality, measurable products. For growth, it is recommended that Mr. Finley extend students mastery of the content by allowing them to design the rubric and topic for an instructional video to support struggling students' language mastery.
