GREENWELL SPRINGS COUPLE ARRESTED ON CHILD CRUELTY AND DRUG CHARGES
(Walker, LA) Walker Police Officers arrested a Greenwell Springs man and woman Monday afternoon after the couple was
found asleep in their truck at the traffic signal at the intersection of Walker North Road and Florida Boulevard, according to
Captain John Sharp, Walker Police Department Public Information Officer. A few minutes earlier, Walker Police received a
report of an older model GMC pickup truck driving erratically, heading toward the intersection.
“At approximately 4:20 pm Monday afternoon, a motorist called to report that an older model, white GMC Sierra pickup truck
was traveling east on Burgess Avenue in a manner which suggested that the driver was impaired,” reported Captain Sharp.
Corporal Mitchell Fouse and Officer Terry Taylor were both on Burgess Avenue when they heard the call and they parked their
police units and waited for the truck to pass. They did not have to wait long.
In less than a minute, the truck passed the two Walker Officers, who began following the truck east on Burgess Avenue toward
Walker North Road, where it then turned right and stopped at the Florida Boulevard traffic signal. “Our Officers were several
vehicles behind the truck at the traffic signal. When the light changed and the truck did not move forward, our Officers exited
their vehicles to check on the truck’s occupants,” Captain Sharp explained. “Upon reaching the truck, Officers found that both
the driver and passenger were asleep. In the back seat of the truck, Officers observed a two year old baby boy.” The male driver
was subsequently identified as Cory E. Norris (31) and the female passenger as Latisha Ann Guinn Walker (45), both of
Greenwell Springs.
Corporal Fouse knocked on the driver side window, waking Norris and Walker. Officers then ordered Norris to put the truck in
park and to get out of the truck. “After putting the truck in park, Mr. Norris suddenly grabbed a small, clear cellophane bag
containing what appeared to be a white crystalline substance, put the bag in his mouth and tried to swallow it,” Captain Sharp
stated. “Officers seized Mr. Norris and as they struggled to pull him from the truck, he was able to grab a used syringe from the
truck’s cup holder. While our Officers were attempting to gain control over Mr. Norris and prevent him from swallowing the
baggie, Mr. Norris repeatedly attempted to stick the Officers with the used syringe.”
In the process of trying to prevent the baggie from being swallowed, Norris bit Corporal Fouse. “There is no easy way to take an
object from the mouth of someone determined to swallow it,” Captain Sharp stated. “As Corporal Fouse was attempting to get
the baggie out of Norris’ mouth, Norris bit down on Corporal Fouse’s thumb and index finger. Fortunately, the wound was not
serious.” Despite the efforts of the Officers to prevent Norris from swallowing the baggie, they were unsuccessful.
The Officers were ultimately able to subdue Norris, handcuff him and place him under arrest. “A subsequent search of Mr.
Norris yielded a container in which was found a quantity of xanax, which is a Schedule IV CDS, as well as methadone, a
Schedule II CDS,” said Captain Sharp. “Our Officers also explained to Mr. Norris the risk of overdose he created by swallowing
the baggie and urged him to disclose the baggie’s contents. Mr. Norris refused however, insisting that he was not going back to

jail. Because of the unknown substance ingested by Mr. Norris and the potential for a life threatening overdose, Mr. Norris was
transported to Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center for medical treatment.
Like Norris, Walker was also significantly impaired, admitting that she had earlier consumed a quantity of methadone for which
she did not have a prescription, according to Captain Sharp. “After finding that Mr. Norris and Ms. Walker were under the
influence of illegal narcotics, that both were in possession of illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia and based upon the totality
of the circumstances, including the reckless endangerment to which they subjected the child, we felt that probable cause existed
to arrest both subjects. We also determined it to be in the best interest of the child to contact the Office of Child Services and
ask that they take custody of the child.
The Livingston Parish Office of Child Services was contacted regarding the two year old child. Following a review of the facts
of the incident and after interviewing Walker, OCS took custody of the child.
After being processed, Walker was transported to the Livingston Parish Detention Center where she was booked on charges of
Possession of Schedule II CDS; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; and Cruelty to a Juvenile. Charges of Possession of CDS in a
Drug Free Zone are expected to be added against Walker as well, and additional charges are possible.
Following his discharge from Lallie Kemp, Norris was transported to the Livingston Parish Detention Center where he was
booked on charges of Possession/Distribution of Schedule II CDS; Possession of Schedule IV CDS; Possession of Drug
Paraphernalia; Cruelty to a Juvenile; Obstruction of Justice; Resisting an Officer by Force or Violence (2 Counts); Aggravated
Battery on a Police Officer; and Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway of Commerce. Additional charges of Possession of CDS
in a Drug Free Zone are expected to be added against Norris and other charges are possible.
“Mr. Norris remains in the Livingston Parish Detention Center with a preset bond of $260,500.00,” said Captain Sharp. “Ms
Walker is being held in the same facility on a preset bond of $35,500.00.”
