Saturday night, while Bay Minette police attempted to arrest a man for public intoxication and disorderly
conduct at the community's May Day event, three officers were physically struck by civilians. An ambulance
responded to the area after the man being arrested complained of chest pain.
The May Day event in the Douglasville community involves family activities, cookouts and various events, according to Bay Minette
Police Department Chief Clarence Crook who estimated there were about 500 or more people gathered Saturday night.
At about 6 p.m. police were patrolling the area where the event took place when officers received a report of a fight near the area of
Pecan Street and Lower Street. Upon arrival Crook said officers heard shots fired and called for assistance from the Baldwin County
Sheriff's Office.
Maj. Anthony Lowery, assistant chief deputy for the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, said their department sent at least nine deputies to
Bay Minette.
Crook said when officers arrived they were unable to determine where the shots came from.
According to Crook, in all there were about 20 officers on scene, including two from the Spanish Fort Police Department and two from
the Loxley Police Department who arrived shortly after the BCSO deputies.
He said later officers received reports of fights and more disorderly conduct and were making people leave the area when they
encountered an intoxicated man.
"He was complaining someone had pulled a gun on him. He was intoxicated. We told him that if that occurred we can get a report done
when he's sober and sign a warrant on the person," Crook said. "He would leave the area but every few minutes he would come back and
constantly say another person pulled a gun on him," Crook explained.
After several encounters Crook said officers decided to make an arrest to try to "ease some of the tension."
"He was intoxicated and disorderly," Crook said. "As we had him on the ground these officers were struck."
During the arrest three Bay Minette Police Department officers were struck by at least two people and received medical attention. Crook
said injuries of the three were to the nose, arm and shoulder.
Crook said the man officers were attempting to arrest "started complaining of chest pain and passing out on the ground" and an
ambulance was called. According to Crook, family members took the man to the hospital.
After he is released from the hospital Crook said a warrant will be out for his arrest.
Bay Minette officers were wearing body cameras during this incident, and Crook said that video will be reviewed Monday in an effort to
identify who struck the three officers. If those people are able to be identified, warrants will be out for their arrests.
