1. PROFESSIONAL/ACADEMICAPPOINTMENTS
August 2016. Elected to the AHA Governing Council of the Section for Psychiatric and
Substance Abuse Services. The AHA Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse
Services currently has more than 1,660 members from across the country and is
comprised of executives from general hospitals and freestanding specialty hospitals that
provide behavioral health services. The section provides forums linking members with
shared interests and missions to advise AHA on policy and advocacy activities and to
discuss issues of great importance to behavioral health providers and the field as a
whole. These efforts are led by the Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services Governing
Council.
March 2016-present. Member, Steering Committee of the National Suicide Prevention
Lifeline. The role of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Steering Committee is to
provide the network's primary investigators/administrators with expert guidance on the
issues that affect the SAMHSA-funded National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network, its
administration, the crisis center community, and its consumers. In addition to a national
hotline, the NSPL is the primary resource used by Google, Facebook and Apple’s Siri.
2015-present. Member, Medical Directors Council of the National Council for
Behavioral Health. The Medical Directors Council advises the National Council board,
staff, and membership (2800 member organizations serving 10m people) on issues and
topics heavily impacted by clinical practice. Medical Director Council members champion
National Council policy and initiatives that impact clinical practice with clinicians
employed by member organizations, national organizations representing clinicians, and
governmental agencies.
July 2015-November 2016. Member, Governor’s Task Force on Mental Health and
Substance Abuse. Appointed by Governor Pat McCrory in August, 2015. One of four
psychiatrists and the only representative from Mecklenburg County, NC’s largest county.
The purpose of the task force is to reduce stigma and find solutions to the mental health
crisis in the state. Appointed by the chairs of the task force (Secretary of HHS and the
Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court) to co-chair of one of three workgroups.
June 2015-October 2016. Co-Chair, North Carolina Institute of Medicine Task Force on
Mental Health and Substance Abuse. TheTaskForce was funded by theKateB. Reynolds
CharitableTrust withthe goalof developing a vision of the ideal community-based,evidence-
informed servicesfor theprevention and treatmentof mentalillness and substanceusedisorders
and a set of actionablerecommendations(within 3-5years) thatcould help communitiesmove
towards thatsystem.
2. 2015-present. Member, National Crisis Services Task Force. Organized by David
Covington, Mike Hogan and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. The task
force is developing national standards for crisis systems of care in the US with a major
focus on integrated systems of care and a goal of reducing or eliminating suicide.

2015-present. Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Carolinas Healthcare
System. Charlotte, NC.
2012-2013. President, Connecticut PsychiatricSociety.TheConnecticutPsychiatric
Societyis a District Branch of the American PsychiatricAssociation composed of nearly 800
members. Focused my term on two goals:‘activating’themembership,and improving the
organization’sresponsivenessto thecommunity. In thefirst two months launched a listsev and
began meetingswiththe Governor’soffice.Received the CPSService Award in May 2013 for
coordinating Sandy Hookpsychiatricresponseand effortsto promotebehavioralhealth on a
nationallevel.
2010-2013. Governor’s appointee to the Advisory Board for the Commissioner of the
Department of Mental Health and Addictions Services, Connecticut. Oneof four
membersof this board elected to the Executive Committeewhich met monthly with the
Commissioner.
2011-2012. Faculty, Psychiatric Leadership Program, a SAMHSAfunded program
organized by the National Council for Community Behavioral Health.
