4. Research/Development key contributions and significant
accomplishments.
 Developed interpretation models for fractured carbonates utilizing resistivity,
sonic, and neutron-density measurements (1979).
 Developed Interpretation model for Oomoldic carbonates utilizing high
frequency dielectric and low frequency resistivity measurements (1984).
 Developed DPT (25Mhz dielectric) interpretation model (1986).
 Developed math model for saturation and cementation exponents as a
function of pore geometries (1986).
 Developed new shale pore pressure interpretation model for undercompacted
shales utilizing MWD and LWD measurements. Commercialized as PERT
(Pressure Evaluation Real Time) program on Advisor Work Station (1990).
 Advised and assisted in the development of a technique to display and interpret logging-while
drilling data in horizontal wells This display and interpretation insures the well bore is placed in
the optimum location within the reservoir. (1992)
 Developed method for optimizing the performance of downhole positive
displacement motors utilizing the GST measurement of motor RPM.
Commercialized as PDM (PowerDrilling Monitor) program on Ideal V3 surface
system (1994).
 Developed patented method for using high sample frequency surface measurements to
enhance low sample frequency downhole measurements. (1994).
 Developed method to compute the directional tendency of the bottomhole drilling
assembly while drilling for both rotating and sliding modes of operation. (1996)
 Developed interpretation applications for a new laterolog type resistivity measurement (GVR)
as a member of the engineering team assigned to this tool project. This is the highest resolution
laterolog type tool in the borehole geophysical market and requires interpretation of multi-depth
of investigation three dimensional measurements.
 Worldwide Knowledge Champion for LWD Interpretation field operations support. Nuclear,
resistivity, sonic, nuclear magnetic resonance, and pressure measurement interpretation support
is provided. Teach and present LWD interpretation and LWD tool measurement theory at
various in-house and client schools.

10. Expertise.
My expertise is reflected in the subject areas that are repeatedly recognized as “strengths”
on my yearly performance appraisals. These are: knowledge of work, initiative, understanding of
product or service, creativity, oral and written communication, performance against objectives, and
13
ability to work with superiors, peers and clients. These areas are strengths in part due to the fact
that I take it upon myself to learn new subject areas extensively and apply this knowledge to the
project I have been assigned. I undertake this learning in a self-motivated style, using the resources
at my disposal. The result is a thorough understanding of the physics of a measurement and the
ability to develop a new and unique way to solve a client problem with these measurements.
My downhole motor analysis project in engineering illustrates this approach. Not having
experience in downhole motor analysis, I researched positive displacement motors as well as
downhole turbines to understand their design and operational behavior. This knowledge in
conjunction with creativity allowed me to overcome two obstacles associated with the analysis of
their downhole operation while drilling - namely how to account for the change in performance for
differing mud flow rates through the motor, and how to quantify the wear in the motor that has
taken place while drilling. The result is a patented commercial product that analyses the
performance and wear of the positive displacement motor while drilling which allows our clients to
maximize their ROP thereby saving them rig costs.
The drilling interpretation experience has been a valuable addition to my extensive
experience with borehole geophysical measurements. I have found that a firm understanding of the
measurement physics is invaluable in order to develop interpretation methodologies. These
interpretations are most useful when both the petrophysical and geological properties of the
formations are considered. Geological properties of age, diagenesis, sequence stratigraphy, and
regional location need to be understood before petrophysical applications can be developed and
applied.

Expertise. My expertise is reflected in the subject areas that are repeatedly recognized as “strengths” on my yearly performance appraisals. These are: knowledge of work, initiative, understanding of product or service, creativity, oral and written communication, performance against objectives, and
  • 13. 13 ability to work with superiors, peers and clients. These areas are strengths in part due to the fact that I take it upon myself to learn new subject areas extensively and apply this knowledge to the project I have been assigned. I undertake this learning in a self-motivated style, using the resources at my disposal. The result is a thorough understanding of the physics of a measurement and the ability to develop a new and unique way to solve a client problem with these measurements. My downhole motor analysis project in engineering illustrates this approach. Not having experience in downhole motor analysis, I researched positive displacement motors as well as downhole turbines to understand their design and operational behavior. This knowledge in conjunction with creativity allowed me to overcome two obstacles associated with the analysis of their downhole operation while drilling - namely how to account for the change in performance for differing mud flow rates through the motor, and how to quantify the wear in the motor that has taken place while drilling. The result is a patented commercial product that analyses the performance and wear of the positive displacement motor while drilling which allows our clients to maximize their ROP thereby saving them rig costs. The drilling interpretation experience has been a valuable addition to my extensive experience with borehole geophysical measurements. I have found that a firm understanding of the measurement physics is invaluable in order to develop interpretation methodologies. These interpretations are most useful when both the petrophysical and geological properties of the formations are considered. Geological properties of age, diagenesis, sequence stratigraphy, and regional location need to be understood before petrophysical applications can be developed and applied. John C. Rasmus
