Helping Your Employees to do Their Very Best
If you're a business owner or manager, you know that how well your business does depends
to a great extent on your employees. Making sure that your workers are as productive as
possible during the course of each workday could mean the difference between your
company's success and failure. The problem is that in this day and age - the day and age of
the Internet, that is - it's extremely difficult to determine just how productive your employees
are being.
It's nice to think that those workers with Internet access are spending each and every minute
of the day engaged in business-related activities online. But the fact of the matter is that there
are a tremendous number of distractions and temptations presented by the Internet: from
shopping to local and national news to weather reports to social media outlets and more.
Assuming that every worker is spending all of his or her time doing only business-related
tasks online is probably nave.
Once you've come to the realization that your employees are wasting some portion of their
workdays online, it's time to decide how to resolve the situation. Many employers have turned
to remote monitoring software as a means to increase workers' productivity, but does this
really work? The unfortunate fact is that remote monitoring software - also referred to as "spy
ware" - often has just the opposite effect. Once employees find out that their boss is "spying"
on them with this invasive type of software, they're very likely to feel some level of
resentment, and that does nothing to improve their level of productivity.
Rather than approaching the situation with a punitive attitude, think of it instead as an
opportunity to help your employees to do their very best. The most effective means to
increase your workers' productivity level is to increase their motivation, and the best way to do
that is through employee performance measurement rather than punitive action. In other
words, begin to measure how productive employees are during the workday rather than how
unproductive they are. Once you determine how much time each individual is spending doing
productive work during the day, you can help to establish performance goals for each person
and develop effective ways to motivate people to do their very best.
In order to accomplish this, it's necessary to find a good employee performance measurement
tool - preferably a software program that enables you to monitor workers' activity in an open
and honest way. The ideal software would even allow your employees to monitor their own
progress. Not only will this help your workers to do their best, but it will also forge a bond of
trust between you and your employees. Having motivated, productive employees who care
about their jobs is the best way to ensure the success of your company.
