THE SEVEN AGES OF MAN
(from As You Like It) by William Shakespeare
z
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
z
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;
And then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover
z
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
seeking the bubble reputation.
z
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
z
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
z
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans
teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything
z
z
Stage 1: Infancy
 The first and primary act of every human
being is the stage of infancy, when he enters
in this world and makes his exist in this stage
of world as a baby.
 He makes his presence felt by crying at the
top of his voice and many a times vomiting
any food or drink that is repulsive, at the
nursing arms of his mother.
 This period normally last till four years of age
z
Stage 2: Schoolboy
The second stage is the ‘whining’ schoolboy where
he learns to utter a plaintive, high-pitched, protracted
sound, as in pain, fear, supplication, or complaint.
In the beginning he does not like going to school
but gradually his thinking changes.
When time passes onwards the schoolboy
transformed into a youngster
z
Stage 3: Lover
 The third stage is his early youth, the peak of
love and high romance .
 He tries to express feelings through song .
 He writes a song or poem expressing the
pains of unfulfilled love and is written to
celebrate the beauty of his mistress.
z
Stage 4: Soldier
 The fourth stage is that of a soldier where life
if full of obligations, commitments,
compliances, oaths and vows.
 His beard is like a leopard or panther.
 He endlessly fights for his honor, a full
presence of mind which is sudden and quick
in quarrel and a heart to maintain a dignified
reputation
z
Stage 5: Adulthood/Justice
 The fifth stage is the adulthood where a man tries
to live a fair and justified life.
 His body develops as he gets matured. Practically,
his is a blend of custom, morality, religion, and
education.
 The visible authority can be well located in him.
 He acts like the ruler, and pass a judgment on any
aspects of life.
z
6. Middle Age
 In this stage he has acquired wisdom through
the many experiences he has had in life.
 He has reached a stage where he has
gained prosperity and social status.
 He becomes very attentive of his looks and
begins to enjoy the finer things of life.
 The man grows older and becomes weak
z
Stage 7: Old Age
 The last stage is the old-age where he enters his second
childhood, at this stage man again behaves like a child.
 He begins to lose his charm — both physical and mental.
 This stage is the worst of the all stages as man loses all of
his senses and strength and his life truly becomes
dependent on others.
 He is without everything; without teeth, eyes and taste.
 His memory becomes weaken and five senses start
malfunctioning and finally he departs from the world leaving
behind a story full of events.

EARNEST WISH
I will
Count the multitude of stars
The leaves in all the branches
The flock of birds perched in the loft
The blades of grass in the meadow
And the cogon flowers in the air.
z
EARNEST WISH
I will
Listen to the sound of breeze
To the rustling of leaves
To the chirping of birds
To the buzzing of the bees
To the flapping of butterfly’s wings.
z
EARNEST WISH
I will
Tend the garden
Rearrange the stones in a pile
Weed the grass in the field
Harvest the fruits in season
And do again all of these
z
EARNEST WISH
Let us
Bring the front liners back home
Fight the unforeseen enemy
Help the new beginning
Contribute to the humanity
Flatten the curve
Stay at home!
