Covid infection raises the chance of mental diseasesAnirban Bose
Researchers emphasize the importance of following up with patients after they have recovered to check for any new disease.
According to research that looked at millions of health records in the US over a year, having Covid-19 puts people at a significantly higher risk of developing new mental health issues, potentially contributing to existing crises of suicide and overdoses.
This document summarizes a CDC webinar on mental health resources for state and local public health partners during COVID-19. The webinar included presentations on CDC's work on mental health data collection and a national mental health campaign. Data shows high levels of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions among public health workers due to pandemic strain. The webinar provided examples of state-level mental health resources and recommendations for supporting public health worker mental health through addressing work stress, stigma reduction, and promoting self-care. Federal resources from CDC and SAMHSA were also highlighted. The webinar aimed to equip state and local partners with mental health tools and best practices for their staff and communities.

The Annenberg Public Policy Center issued the following news release:
People who rely on social media for information were more likely to be misinformed about vaccines than those
who rely on traditional media, according to a study of vaccine knowledge and media use by researchers at the
Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.
The study, based on nationally representative surveys of nearly 2,500 U.S. adults, found that up to 20% of
respondents were at least somewhat misinformed about vaccines. Such a high level of misinformation is
"worrying" because misinformation undermines vaccination rates, and high vaccination rates are required to
maintain community immunity, the researchers said.
The study of vaccine misinformation, published in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review, was
conducted in the spring and fall of 2019, when the United States experienced its largest measles outbreak in a
quarter century. Between the two survey periods, 19% of the respondents' levels of vaccine misinformation
changed in a substantive way - and within that group, almost two-thirds (64%) were more misinformed in the fall
than in the spring.
Media consumption patterns helped to explain the change in misinformation levels, the researchers found. Those
respondents who reported increased exposure to information about measles and the MMR (measles, mumps, and
rubella) vaccine on social media were more likely to grow more misinformed about vaccines. By contrast, those
people who reported an increased exposure to news accounts about those topics in traditional media were more
likely to grow less misinformed about vaccines.
"People who received their information from traditional media were less likely to endorse common anti-vaccination
claims," said lead author Dominik Stecula, a postdoctoral fellow in the science of science communication program
at the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC). He co-authored the study with Ozan Kuru, another APPC
postdoctoral fellow, and APPC Director Kathleen Hall Jamieson.
The result is consistent with research suggesting that social media contain a fair amount of misinformation about
vaccination while traditional media are more likely to reflect the scientific consensus on its benefits and safety,
according to the Annenberg researchers.
'Worrying' levels of vaccine misinformation
The researchers found that:
* 18% of respondents mistakenly say that it is very or somewhat accurate to state that vaccines cause autism;
* 15% mistakenly agree that it is very or somewhat accurate to state that vaccines are full of toxins;
* 20% wrongly report that it is very or somewhat accurate to state that it makes no difference whether parents
choose to delay or spread out vac.

A Cross Sectional Study To Assess The Willingness And Hesitancy Regarding COV...Robin Beregovska
This study assessed willingness and hesitancy regarding COVID-19 vaccination among 500 people in India. The majority (60.8%) reported moderate hesitancy and 64.2% reported moderate willingness. Some demographic factors like gender, education, and occupation were associated with hesitancy levels, while age, education, occupation, and family type were associated with willingness levels. The study recommends effective education to address vaccine hesitancy and increase willingness. Other similar studies in other countries also found varying levels of hesitancy influenced by factors like gender, trust in information sources, and safety concerns regarding new vaccines.
It's no secret that the healthcare system needs some work. In fact, it's not really a system at all. It's confusing, it's difficult to navigate, and it's too expensive. When you combine that with some of the demographic trends that you see in our country — the population is getting older, we're experiencing more chronic disease — it gets even more complicated and more expensive. And consumer expectations are changing dramatically as well. So, this creates an opportunity for an organization like ours to lead this digital transformation.

The World Health Organization termed the spread of COVID-19 misinformation an "infodemic" that led to unnecessary death and suffering. A vast amount of disinformation spread on social media and through bots, confusing people and undermining public health efforts. Disinformation promoted dangerous "cures" and conspiracy theories, and later targeted COVID-19 vaccines. Vulnerable groups like women, youth, and low-income individuals were specifically targeted. The spread of misinformation has been linked to lower vaccination rates and higher COVID-19 death rates among some groups.

FDA Authorizes Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 Vaccine for Emergency UseEMMAIntl
In a historic move on Friday afternoon, the FDA granted the first Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) to Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for use in individuals ages 16 and older. This allows for the first COVID-19 vaccine to begin being distributed country-wide; the first shipments started rolling out from Pfizer’s Michigan facility early Sunday morning. This historic authorization comes after roughly 12 months, 300,000 US deaths, and more than 1.5 million deaths globally...
The document discusses updates on Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) including epidemiology, the case definition, and COVID-19 vaccination. It summarizes national surveillance data showing over 9,000 MIS-C cases reported in the US from 2020 to 2022, with the majority in males and non-Hispanic Black or Hispanic children. Trends over time show declining MIS-C incidence, especially with Omicron variants, and a shift to younger age groups affected. The presentation also discusses the new Council of State & Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE)/CDC surveillance case definition for MIS-C which aims to standardize surveillance in response to limitations identified in the original CDC definition.

This study analyzed 3,615 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 at a large New York City hospital system between March 4-April 4, 2020. The researchers found that among patients under 60 years old, those with a BMI between 30-34 were twice as likely to be admitted to the hospital and 1.8 times as likely to require critical care compared to those with a BMI under 30. Patients under 60 with a BMI over 35 were 2.2 times as likely to be hospitalized and 3.6 times as likely to need critical care, indicating that obesity is an under-recognized risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes in younger patients.

The US Food and Drug Administration plans to authorize mixing different COVID-19 vaccines for booster shots, allowing people to receive a different vaccine brand for their booster than their original dose. While the details are still unclear, the FDA is expected to issue broad guidance on this as soon as this week. Mixing boosters has been a top concern for those originally vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson one-dose vaccine. Preliminary studies have shown mixing vaccines is safe and effective at boosting immune response, including against the Delta variant.
The document discusses barriers to universal COVID-19 vaccination in the US and provides recommendations to overcome them using behavioral science. Some key barriers include ambiguity around vaccine details, people wanting to wait and see how vaccines work out before getting vaccinated themselves, and some people not thinking they need a vaccine. Recommendations focus on improving information availability, building trust in health authorities, highlighting vaccine success rates over rare risks, and acknowledging people's perspectives while encouraging vaccination. The goal is to use behavioral insights to drive near universal vaccination in the US.
n early 2020, when the novel coronavirus began to spread around the world, it became increasingly clear that the most effective way to combat the raging pandemic would be for the majority of the population to develop immunity — whether through natural infection or vaccination.
Background: Covid-19 an illness caused by SARS- COV-2 virus, it has killed millions of people all over the world and has wreaked havoc in India too. Even today there is no confirmed drug that can successfully tackle the illness. According to WHO, efficient vaccines and equitable access to them is vital to curbing the Covid-19 pandemic.
Materials and Methods: With the help of a semi-structured question guide, six focus group discussions were conducted in several villages in East Khasi hills Meghalaya, each focus group had 6-12 participants, thematic analysis was used to analyze the data.
Results: Most of the villagers are affected by covid-19 and the lockdown measures to curb it, but their perceptions on vaccinations were negative. Certain thematic areas that seemed to repeat were, religious beliefs, lack of awareness, individual freedom to choose, not feeling like they require it as they are just agricultural laborers, fear of side effects, and the prevalence of negative propaganda on social media. Most believe if it’s mandatory to take the vaccine everyone would take it. Few village heads suggested better awareness might be able to convince a few.
Conclusion: The majority said they were not ready to get vaccinated, and cited religion and individual freedom to choose as the reasons for their reluctance. Health awareness programs and more pro vaccine governmental policies may help improve coverage.

The CDC held a webinar to summarize interim recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals and provide a science update on COVID-19. Key points included:
- Fully vaccinated people can gather indoors without masks or distancing with other fully vaccinated people and with unvaccinated people from a single household who are at low-risk of severe COVID-19.
- Recommendations depend on the risks of unvaccinated individuals and number of households involved.
- Fully vaccinated people should continue public health precautions like masking and distancing in public until more of the population is vaccinated.
A project in Michigan dramatically reduced infections and saved lives and money in intensive care units. The Michigan Keystone ICU Project partnered hospitals to implement a checklist for catheter insertions. This reduced catheter-related bloodstream infections by 66% in over 100 ICUs over 18 months, saving over 1,500 lives and $200 million. The success showed that simple tools can greatly improve outcomes through changing practices and culture across a healthcare system.

This document provides a summary of key trends related to vaccination. It discusses how vaccine hesitancy has increased around the world in recent decades, potentially undermining public health efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employers have an important role to play in encouraging vaccination and responsible behavior during pandemics in order to protect public health and enable businesses and the economy to return to normal. However, the spread of misinformation about health issues and vaccines has undermined trust and compliance with public health recommendations. As research on a COVID-19 vaccine continues, effectively countering misinformation will be important for building confidence in any potential vaccine.

In times of duress and difficulty, it is imperative for leaders to rise from the shadows and steer the people into a future of possibility and hope. Leadership is not always assigned, rather it is clarified in times of trial. As John Kenneth Galbraith said, leadership is the confrontation of the major anxiety of their people in their time.

It takes years to rebuild what war can destroy in seconds. On the other hand, some ruins remain, to serve as a reminder on what we stand to lose if another major conflict will not be averted. Fantasy baseball daily notes: Pitcher and hitter rankings for TuesdayJohn Eilermann St Louis
This document provides fantasy baseball pitching and hitter recommendations for April 27th matchups. It highlights Adrian Houser, David Peterson, and Jose Quintana as top streaming pitching options due to their matchups against weak offensive teams. It also lists hitter matchup ratings for the day's games on a 1-10 scale to indicate favorable and unfavorable matchups. Tyler Rogers and Camilo Doval are recommended as top bullpen options.
As April comes to a close, some fantasy managers will start to reach panic mode with their struggling players. This is a great time to acquire those who are in a slump, especially pitchers whose numbers may have been skewed by one bad start. You will find plenty of mid-level hurlers in this space, and my advice is to acquire them before their next outing.

Catcher remains fantasy baseball’s thinnest position (think tight end in football), with only J.T. Realmuto and Salvador Perez finishing inside the top-100 players last season. Put differently, the No. 10 fantasy catcher last year (Martin Maldonado) was the No. 487 ranked player overall (No. 190 hitter).
Despite the shoulder issue, Bellinger played the outfield for most of the World Series against the Rays, aside from serving as the team’s designated hitter in Game 4. Though he was out on the field, his production in the World Series wasn’t all there, hitting just one homer with three RBIs in the six games.
The Brewers and Braun intended all along to allow as much time as he needed to decide whether to pursue continuing his career. Among the many factors were family considerations (wife Larisa gave birth to the couple’s third child last May), baseball considerations (at the moment it looks like there won’t be a designated hitter in the National League in 2021) and the trajectory of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Golden Group is over. Can a new group step up? Two years ago, Kevin De Bruyne plunged Belgium’s Euro 2024 plans into disorder when he claimed the team was “too old” to win in an interview with The Protector. A group-stage exit and just one goal at the World Cup put Belgium on course for a restructure.

Coach Domenico Tedesco has managed a tactical shakeup and a regular exit for some of the oldest players. Experienced bests remain, not least the 37-year-old Jan Vertonghen in defense, the 32-year-old De Bruyne himself in midfield, and 31-year-old Romelu Lukaku up visible.
Still, younger actors like De Bruyne’s Manchester City partner Jeremy Doku bring fresh vitality to the team. Euro Cup Germany Qualifying unbeaten with just four goals allowed from eight games was a welcome sign of accomplishment back on track under Tedesco.

1. Social distancing limited Covid-19 spread for Major League Baseball

(CNN) — When the Philadelphia Phillies met the Miami Marlins on the field last July, a batch of Marlins players were infected
with coronavirus, although they didn't know it.
One case led to 19 other cases -- a superspreader event, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday.
But with no fans in the stands and strict measures requiring the use of masks, social distancing and other measures, the two
Major League Baseball teams managed to spend 11 hours on the field together over the course of five games without
spreading the virus there, the CDC researchers said.
Social distancing and mask use worked, they said, and team members were safer outdoors than inside.
On July 24, at the delayed start of the 2020 baseball season, the
Philadelphia Department of Public Health was notified that someone from
the Marlins team had a positive test for Covid-19. "The player was isolated
as recommended," the researchers wrote in the CDC's weekly report, the
MMWR.
During the series and the week after, 19 additional team members on the
Marlins tested positive for Covid-19. A sta member on the Phillies also
tested positive. Even though the teams played each other, no opposing
team players, coaches or umpires became infected. The CDC said
interactions outside of on-field play were likely the source of the spread of
the disease.
To try to limit outbreaks this year, MLB took precautions, including holding
games without fans, and banning high-fives, fist bumps and spitting
among players. The enhanced team health and safety protocols reduced
the time opposite team members would interact with each other and their
interaction was mostly outdoors.
"Though one outbreak might not be representative of all scenarios faced
by MLB, by mid October 2020, only 91 of 169,143 samples (0.05%) from
21 di erent teams returned positive test results," the research team wrote.
"No other Covid-19 outbreaks have spread to opposing MLB team
members."
Social distancing, playing games outside, mask measures, and other MLB
health and safety protocols seemed to work, although the measures were
"not infallible" and containing the disease with isolation and quarantine is
important to limit the spread, the researchers concluded.
The only Phillies team member who got sick had closely interacted
indoors with the Marlins, as did the additional Phillies employee who
subsequently tested positive.
The researchers noted that players and sta reported coronavirus
symptoms an average of 2.3 days after positive test results, highlighting
the importance of testing even those who show no symptoms of the virus.
MLB has employed a Covid-19 health monitoring and testing plan for its
players and sta .

"Our approach evolved as we learned more about the virus," an MLB
spokesperson told CNN Thursday. "We closed the regular season with 30
straight days without a Major League testing positive, and we have
opened the Postseason with 22 days and counting of the same." The
spokesperson noted that no Major League players tested positive for 52
consecutive days through October 21.
Dr. Ali Khan, former director of CDC's O ce of Public Health Preparedness
and Response and now dean of the University of Nebraska's School of
Public Health, is helping advise MLB on Covid-19 risk management and
helped write the report on the outbreak.
"You can't test your way out of this problem," Khan told CNN Thursday,
noting that the MLB and its players were disciplined in practicing
mitigation measures both on and o the field.
Still, he noted that players are often only as safe as the communities they
are playing in.
"Even these multilayers of protection, unless you drop the disease within
the community, you continue to put these individuals at risk in other sports
and in other entities," Khan said. "You have to really drop transmission
within the community to really make sure you're protecting those
individuals."
It might not be possible for all teams to take the measures MLB used,
especially frequent testing and contact tracing, the researchers noted. But non-professional sports can follow other rules to
reduce the risk of spread.
"Willingness to adapt play based on knowledge of community transmission, and adherence to community mitigation strategies
might allow sporting activities to resume," the research team concluded.
