BENCHMARK
REPORT
(sUMMARY
The overall variance is 2.08% below the CPI benchmark, based on the January 2015 Index.
300 of the 400 items within this report (75%) featured in the previous report, from October 2014, which showed an overall variance of
1.16% above the CPI benchmark.
Fig 1 below represents the trajectory of the overall percentage variances observed since reporting commenced in January 2013,
alongside the total [Client] and CPI levels of expenditure within the 400-item sample benchmarked in each report.
The more competitive result is primarily due to favourable pricing changes occurring within the fruit & vegetables grouping, with further
detail provided on page 11.

SUMMARY
This report was compiled from electronic data detailing purchasing activity occurring during the month of January 2015, as supplied by
[Contractor] on behalf of [Client], from which a sample of the top 400 items as determined by total expenditure has been taken.
The vast majority of items procured through 3663, Coca-Cola Enterprises, Dairy Crest & Delice De France have been matched exactly
against the supplier product codes provided. Elsewhere, the best possible match has been derived from the description and item
specifications given, with branded items matched exactly by brand.
Fig 2 below represents the total spend by [Client] within the 400-item sample during the stipulated purchasing period, alongside what
it would be at CPI prices.
Fig 3 below shows how the total spend divided among the major product groups within the 400-item sample.

CONFECTIONERY
Fig 13 below represents the cash and percentage variances for confectionery since January 2013.
34 of the 35 items within this group (97%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
Although the vast majority of items within this grouping register above CPI, confectionery nevertheless accounts for a very modest
proportion of expenditure within the sample. Consequently, the unfavourable changes occurring within this grouping have had only a
very minimal impact in offsetting the fall in the overall variance.

DRINKS
Fig 14 below represents the cash and percentage variances for drinks items since January 2013.
All of the 23 items within this group (100%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
The rise in variance within this grouping is largely due to unfavourable pricing changes affecting the following high-spend items:
Harrogate Still Mineral Water 500ml (Simple Simon - HSSTIL01)
The [Client] price has increased by 15%, whilst the CPI price has decreased by 2%.
Fresh Orange Juice 2.27ltr (Simple Simon - JOGPOJ06)
The [Client] price has increased by 25%, whilst the CPI price has also risen, albeit only by 5%.

FRUIT &
VEGETABLES
Fig 15 below shows the cash and percentage variances for fresh fruit & vegetables since January 2013.
25 of the 72 items within this group (35%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
The substantially more competitive outcome for fruit & vegetables is largely due to favourable price changes affecting a single high-
spend key item:
Fresh Juicing Oranges 15kg (Fresh Direct - 110315)
The [Client] price has fallen by 25%, whilst the CPI price has increased by 18%.

GROCERIES
Fig 16 below represents the cash and percentage variances for groceries observed since January 2013.
119 of the 178 items within this group (67%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
The moderately less competitive result for groceries is primarily due to unfavourable price changes occurring across the higher-spend
items within the group, foremost among which are:
Country Life Butter 250gr (Dairy Crest – 2526)
The [Client] price has increased by 24%, whereas the CPI price has decreased by 7%.
Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade Vanilla Ice Cream 150ml (3663 – 30842)
The [Client] price has increased by 12%, whilst the CPI price has also risen, albeit only by 2%.

MEAT
Fig 17 below shows the cash and percentage variances for meat items since January 2013.
32 of the 43 items within this group (74%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
The fall in variance within this grouping can largely be attributed to the high turnover of meat items within the sample, which has led
to the introduction of several high-spend items registering competitive variances below the CPI benchmark, foremost among which are:
Fresh UK Diced Lamb (Nigel Fredericks - LB26)
Fresh UK Boneless Green Gammon (Nigel Fredericks – BA01)

FISH
Fig 18 below shows the cash and percentage variances for fish items since January 2013.
15 of the 28 items within this group (54%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
The substantial further decrease in variance within this grouping is largely due to a favourable volume change affecting the following item:
Scottish Salmon Fillets (Daily Fish Supplies - 01S3010205)
The volume for this item, which continues to register a very competitive result below the CPI benchmark, has more than doubled.

NON-FOODS
Fig 19 below represents the cash and percentage variances for non-food items since January 2013.
8 of the 21 items within this group (38%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark.
Although the cash and percentage variances observed within this group have fallen marginally, non-food items continue to represent a
negligible proportion of expenditure within the sample. Therefore, the collective impact of the changes occurring within this group
remains minimal.

Although the vast majority of items within this grouping register above CPI, confectionery nevertheless accounts for a very modest proportion of expenditure within the sample. Consequently, the unfavourable changes occurring within this grouping have had only a very minimal impact in offsetting the fall in the overall variance. Fig 13.

All of the 23 items within this group (100%) registered a variance above the CPI benchmark. The rise in variance within this grouping is largely due to unfavourable pricing changes affecting the following high-spend items: Harrogate Still Mineral Water 500ml (Simple Simon - HSSTIL01) The [Client] price has increased by 15%, whilst the CPI price has decreased by 2%. Fresh Orange Juice 2.27ltr (Simple Simon - JOGPOJ06) The [Client] price has increased by 25%, whilst the CPI price has also risen, albeit only by 5%. Fig 14.

The substantially more competitive outcome for fruit & vegetables is largely due to favourable price changes affecting a single high- spend key item: Fresh Juicing Oranges 15kg (Fresh Direct - 110315) The [Client] price has fallen by 25%, whilst the CPI price has increased by 18%. Fig 15.

The moderately less competitive result for groceries is primarily due to unfavourable price changes occurring across the higher-spend items within the group, foremost among which are: Country Life Butter 250gr (Dairy Crest – 2526) The [Client] price has increased by 24%, whereas the CPI price has decreased by 7%. Ben & Jerry’s Fairtrade Vanilla Ice Cream 150ml (3663 – 30842) The [Client] price has increased by 12%, whilst the CPI price has also risen, albeit only by 2%. Fig 16.

The fall in variance within this grouping can largely be attributed to the high turnover of meat items within the sample, which has led to the introduction of several high-spend items registering competitive variances below the CPI benchmark, foremost among which are: Fresh UK Diced Lamb (Nigel Fredericks - LB26) Fresh UK Boneless Green Gammon (Nigel Fredericks – BA01) Fig 17.

The substantial further decrease in variance within this grouping is largely due to a favourable volume change affecting the following item: Scottish Salmon Fillets (Daily Fish Supplies - 01S3010205) The volume for this item, which continues to register a very competitive result below the CPI benchmark, has more than doubled. Fig 18.

Although the cash and percentage variances observed within this group have fallen marginally, non-food items continue to represent a negligible proportion of expenditure within the sample. Therefore, the collective impact of the changes occurring within this group remains minimal. Fig 19.
