1. The
purpose
of
this
project
is
to
explore
the
impact
of
media
on
substance
abuse
among
adolescents.
Purpose
Significance
Adolescents
and
children
have
a
greater
vulnerability
to
alcohol
as
opposed
to
adults.
Since
alcohol
adver<sing
is
a
poten<al
factor
for
encouraging
drinking
among
adolescents,
preventa<ve
measures
should
be
taken
in
order
to
educate
the
ci<zens
of
New
Jersey
especially
the
youth.
Prolonged
alcohol
use
interferes
with
the
Brain’s
communica<on
pathway.
It
can
damage
the
heart,
liver,
pancreas,
cause
certain
cancers
and
it
can
affect
one’s
immune
system.
Methods
Par<cipants
that
were
18
years
and
younger
were
the
focus
of
the
longitudinal
studies.
Longitudinal
studies
assessing
the
rela<onship
of
media
in
rela<on
to
youth
and
substance
abuse
were
examined.
AKer
analyzing
the
studies,
review
of
whether
media
makes
any
contribu<on
to
the
alcohol/
substance
abuse
among
youths/
adolescents
was
evaluated.
Outcome
The
longitudinal
studies
conclude
that
alcohol
adver<sing
increases
the
likelihood
that
adolescents
who
already
drink,
will
drink
more
and
that
those
who
do
not
drink
will
start
to
use
alcohol.
Evalua9on
The
results
presented
should
be
incorporated
into
school-‐based
programs
that
will
help
adolescents
become
aware
of
the
detriments
of
substance
abuse.
Subsequent
studies
should
be
conducted
to
ensure
that
adolescents
understand
the
dangers
of
using
drugs.
In
addi<on,
surveys
should
be
used
as
markers
to
measure
success
of
the
school
based
programs
that
preach
against
the
use
of
drugs
and
alcohol.
